Patrolman Takes Time Out to Inspect Offspring Indianapolis U.R) Patro- man Phillip C. Parker was cruis ing early in the morning listen ing to routine reports on the police radio. Then he heard his own car summoned by the im personal speaker: "Car 27. Parker. Congratula tions. It's a boy. Five pounds and-14 ounces. Mother and baby doing fine." Th next word from car 27 was "Out of service at General Hospital." cancer had returned in the arm pit and had grown into and plugged up the little lymph ves sels which carry fluid out of the tissues of the arm. .In many cases, of course, shortly after the removal of a breast the arm swells slightly, but this swelling tends to go away with time. It is what we doctors call a benign trouble, and it is not due to cancer. It can clear up with time and some massage. In the worst cases, in which cancer has returned, the arm be comes so heavy, so dead, and so without function that it is like a big tumor hanging from the woman's shoulder. Naturally, she gets terribly tired of carry. ing it about. In the cases of mild and benign swelling, it helps to raise the arm and to leave it on a pillow so that the lymph can flow back into the body. Some times gentle and expert massage will help. I do not know of any medicine taken by mouth that will help this condition. Goiters Many ask about goiters. There are several types of these en largements of the thyroid gland. There is a large, so-called rub bery goiter which does not pro duce toxicity, but which may become so large that it interferes with breathing. A big goiter is disfiguring, and I think it should always be removed. It may be well to remove surgically all goiters, because about one in 20 can, at any time, become can cerous. A few are cancerous when they are first seen. The so-called inward goiter is one that grows downward be hind the breast bone. This can often be seen in an x-ray film. It may interfere with breathing, and then it should quickly be removed. There are two main types of toxic goiter; one, the exophthal mic one, in which the eyes be come prominent, and bulge for ward, and the other, in which there is what we call a toxic adenoma, or 'little tumor that produces too much of the active secretion of the thyroid gland. Today, many physicians treat the disease with radioactive io dine or with certain new drugs. Other men still believe in re moving surgically the diseased tissue. , KBES-TV 8:30 P.M. If the surgeon removes a little ..too much tissue, the patient may get slowed-up and cold and sleepy, and then each day she will have to take thyroid substance per haps for the rest of her life. With a toxic goiter, the per son often has a reddish face, and a fine tremor of her hands. She (it is usually a woman), will oft en perspire too much; she may sleep poorly, she may be so warm that at night she wants to kick off the bed clothes, and, in spite of eating much, she may lose much weight. At times she may be over-emotional and un reasonable, and a bit difficult. She may keep blinking her eyes rapidly, anTl often she is so rest less she can t sit still. Usually the heartbeat becomes rapid, and if the patient is not treated quickly, the heart muscle is likely to become injured. In these people the liver, also, is injured if the disease is allowed to go untreated too long.
