Stevenson said today that the Democrats are "the only party" that is "concerned about the farmers' plight." The Democratic presidential nominee said that "historically" the farmer has "gotten in trouble" under Republican ad ministrations, and "prospered" under the Democrats. He said he and his running mate. Sen. Estes Kefauver, came here for a regional party meeting to "hear the farmers' story" and learn how to "drive this story home" to the people. Stevenson and Kefauver flew they attended a conference of party officals from the Pacific Northwest Tuesday. Says Democrats Concerned Stevenson said in his remarks prepared for delivery here triat "our party has always been the party and the only party that is concerned about the farmers' plight today." Stevenson said for every S4 the farmer got in 1952, he is get ting less than S3 today. The farmers' share of the food dol lar has dropped from 47 cents to 38 cents in the same period, he-said. 'And we know, too. that when here from Portland, Ore., where the farmer goes broke the rest On The Side BVE.v.Duriing (Distributed by Kinf FurufM Svndicjra. Inc.) To speed up the country's notoriously lagging birth rate. the French government intro duced a "bonus for babies" sys tem. Tlie more babies the high er the family allowance. Now many Frenchmen are being paid more money for their achieve ments as fathers than they re ceive from their regular jobs. As for example, the husband of 40- year old Mms. Gabrielle Forgnot of Is-Sur-Tielle, France, who has given birth to six sets of twins. The Forgnots have 15 children in all. From the gov ernment they get a "family, al lowance" equal to $56 a week! At his regular job. Monsieur Forgnot earns $20 a week. Inci dentally, six sets of twins is not the world's record. I believe a Connecticute woman gave birth to seven sets of twins. Am check ing. Asking Queries from clients. Q. What film star first played the part of the Queen of Sheba? A. Betty Blythe in 1916.. Incidentally, in that production King Solomon was portrayed as being clean shaven. J. Gordon Edwards, the producer, explained this devia tion from history by saying that "beards were not romantic. That "whiskers ruin a love scene" ... Q. Of .whom was it said, "there is language in her eye, her cheek, her lips, nay, her foot speaks"? A. That is how Shakespeare described Cressida in his play "Troilus and Cressi da." It is a description once ap plied to Anna Held. However, I cannot think of any present day act: ess it might fit. The language of the eye seems to be a lost art. Passing By Wladziu Valentino Liberace. Picturesque pianist. Can you pronounce his name correctly? I mean his first name. Did you know that in addition to his mu sical ability, Wladziu is an ac complished cook? He is a mem ber of the Amateur Chefs asso ciation. For Father What did you give your male parent for father s day? Did he like it? Did he exchange it? Probably not. Women have no hesitation in exchanging Christ mas, birthday, wedding anniver sary or mother's day gifts but men usually keep a present whether they like it or not. They hesitate to hurt the giver's feel ings. Anyway, want an idea for next father's day? To the pres ents you give your papa, add a copy of Albert Parry's book ti tled "Whistler's Father." It will zio Pinza Will be Replaced in Stage Play New York (U.R) Luther Adler will replace Enzio Pinza in "A Very Special Baby," sched uled for a New York State pre mier on Nov. 14. Producer David Susskind said Tuesday he was forced to get a replacement for the nonsinging role when Pinza suffered a mild heart attack last Friday while vacationing in Italy. Adler will costar with his for mer wife, Sylvia Sidney. He will play her father in the production. build up the old boy's morale. Please Note Lloyd's of London paid out about $4 million in insurance claims for that Andrea Doria Stockholm disaster. But don't worry about Lloyd's going broke. Last year, 1955, Lloyd's took in about $260 million in ma rine insurance, premiums and paid out about $224 million in claims. So their profit on marine insurance was S36 million for that one year. Not bad. Dogs vs. Postmen In this country last year over 6,000 postmen were bitten by dogs. A wide variety of preven tive measures for this situation have been suggested. The most successful protective measure currently in use is a water pistol filled with ammonia. That seems to make most dogs retreat. My suggestion would be that the family dog be taken to the post office to meet the postman as signed to the route. Or to bring the postman into the house, in troduce him to the dog and let them get acquainted. Naming Baby The naming of boys after pres idents appears to have been prac tically abandoned. Have you a friend so named? How is he doing? This brings to mind that the only successful man I can think of who was named after Abraham Lincoln was Abraham Lincoln Erlanger, the theatrical man. And he always signed his name "A. L. Erlanger." Get It Right Frequently misspelled is the name of that musical hit show of the yesteryear titled "Floro dora." It is wrongly spelled "Floradora." It is not the name of a woman but the name of an island in the Philippines where the action of the play took place. Alabama Voters Aim at Integration Birmingham, Ala. (U.R) Alabama voters stripped their state constitution to remove clauses that might be used as a basis for enforcing integration of public schools, returns from a referendum showed today. The segregation - conscious vo ters approved by a thumping ma jority in the referendum Tuesday the bold act of removing their state constitutional guarantees of public school education. This will empower the state legislature to abolish the state school system, if necessary, to sidestep any court decrees aim ed at lowering classroom racial barriers. The voters also approved a second broad constitutional am endment providing authority for preserving segregation in public parks and playgrounds. Springfield Will Have Ihree-Way Mayor Roce Springfield (U.R) Two last minute filings here yester day assured Springfield citizens a three-way race for the post of mayor. B. T. Larson, a former mayor, and John A. Briggs, a member oi the city council, both filed just before the deadline yester day afternoon. B. J. Rogers, a district manager for a feed and seed company, filed for the post earlier. Following -the opening re marks by Stevenson and Kefau ver, there was to be a panel dis cussion of farm prices and in come, soil conservation and the soil bank, farm credit and crop insurance, rural electrification, and administration of the farm program. The sessions were to' be closed. To Discuss Kefauver Role Democrats from Iowa, North and South Dakota, Kansas, Ne braska, Minnesota and Wiscon sin gathered at Sioux City for the meeting, to be presided over by two Minnesotans Sen. Hu bert Humphrey and Gov. Orville Freeman. The role Kefauver will play in the Democratic effort to woo the farm belt was expected to be discussed. Kefauver, regarded as a strong vote-getter in Midwest ern rural areas, is likely to carry the load of the Stevenson cam paign in the farm section. The candidates and their party will spend tonight in Sioux City, and depart early Thursday for a fourth regional conference at Knoxville, Tenn.. this one with Southern Democrats. They will return to Chicago Thursday night. Talent High School Opens September 10 Talent Talent High school will open Monday, Sept. 10, ac cording to Eugene Vinckel, prin cipal.
