Navy Wives Express Deep Pride, Hope Downed Husbands May Still Be Alive Iwakuni, Japan (U.R) Cour ageous wives of the U.S. Navy airmen shot down last week of the coast of Communist China today expressed a deep pride in their missing husbands and a quiet, fervent hope they may still be alive. Four wives whose husbands are still lost and one wife who already knows that hers is dead met the press at this naval air station for the first time since Communist planes shot down a U.S. Navy patrol plane with 16 men aboard early Sunday. No Tears or Hysteria There were no tears, no sobs and no hysteria. Seated in the quiet atmos phere of the base executive offi cer's home were Mrs. Beverly Deane, wife of Lt. (je) James B. Deane, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mrs. Dorothy Flood, wife of Lt. (jg) Francis A. Flood Jr., Chevy Chase, Md.; Mrs. Frances Mes linger, wife of AT2 Carl E. Mes singer, Laredo, Mo.; Mrs. Ruth Hutchinson, wife of Lt. Cdr. Mil ton Hutchinson, Cumberland, R.I., and Mrs. Elizabeth Jean Mattin, wife of AET-1 Albert P. Pattln, Delta, Ohio, the only man whose body nas been found. The wife of Lt. Cdr. James W. Ponsford of Long Beach, Calif., was the only one unable to at tend the conference. She was still under a doctor's care. Nixon in Capital To Plan Campaign Washington U.R Vice President Richard M. Nixon ar rived in the capital today to be gin planning the forthcoming Republican campaign. Nixon told reporters at Na tional airport he would confer with members of the Republican National comnfittee, "but first I want to get a little sleep." He said there is "no question that it will be a tough cam paign." "I have great respect for Mr. Stevenson and Mr. Kefauver," the vice president said. "They will present the case against the administration very well." Nixon flew hec from Los Angeles, where he spent the week end at his family's home, where his father is seriously ill The women, composed but showing the ordeal of the past four days, all wanted the "folks at home" to know they were all right. They also wanted every one to know that they had "no regrets." Mrs. Mattin, the only woman who knew for certain that her husband was dead, almost broke down as she spoke, but she caught herself in time. "I am not despondent, and I have no regrets," she said al most inaudibly. "I'm very proud of my husband. I am sure he was willing to give his life for his country." Quotes From the News By UNITED PRESS Orlando, Fla. jCU.R) The Rev. J. W. Ordered to leave the country within 24 hours were William Stevenson, correspondent for the Toronto Star; Eileen Travis of Buffalo, N. Y., Cairo correspond ent for the London Daily Mail, and Ann Sharplcy, a writer for the London Evening Standard. None of the three was given a reason for the expulsion. On The Side ByE.V.Durling (Distributee1 ky Kinf Feehirea SmcaM, ImJ What major city has the most beautiful policewomen? I think it is a dead heat between San Francisco and New York. Any way, an unusual number of good looking young women have been trying for places on the New York force. The salary is $4,000 a year to start. In three years it is increased to $5,315 annual ly. A policewoman can retire after 20 years service on a pen sion equal to half her salary. Many New York policewomen are married to policemen. After 20 years, such a married couple could retire on a pension equal to a regular full salary of a po lice officer. Not bad. Among The Married Do you favor double beds or twin beds for the married? How about separate rooms? Dr. Marie Stopes, internationally celebrat ed expert on the subject of life among the married, said, "What I think is really the best way for the majority is for the wife to have a room with a double bed and the husband to have a bed room to himself." Difference What is the difference between a nudist and a naturist? Such is the query of a Baltimorean, who says she has wagered there is no difference. She loses. A nud ist merely believes in sun-bathing in the nude. An addition to having that belief, a naturist is a teetotaller, a nonsmoker and a vegetarian. So They Say Most flirtatious females of the Zodiac are those born under Gemini (May 22-June 21). Most women flirt occasionally just to test their male attracting pow ers but with Gemini women flirt ation is a favorite diversion. Can cer (June 22-July 23) men like to cook. Also go in for originat ing salads. However, they usual ly leave the kitchen a wreck. And what they cook is frequent ly very hard on the digestion of their wives and guests, or so say the stargazers. Sidelights It was Christian Dior who said "The knee is the ugliest spot in a woman's anatomy" . , , Now that hurricanes are in the news again, are you able to explain the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane and a tornado? Asking Queries from clients? Q. I say more Americans died in the Korean war, than in the Am erican Revolution. Right? A. Quite right, sir. In the Revolu tionary war, 4,435 Americans .died. In the Korean war 52,226 Americans died. Q. You do not wax very enthusiastic about Mar ilyn Monroe. Who is your favor ite actress, if any? A. I have no special favorite. However, I am an enthusiatic admirer of Greer Garson, Barbara Stanwyk, Eileen Herlie, Patricia Morison, Arlene Dahl and Vivian Blaine. Horses arid Women Chinese women retain their youthful figures longer than the females of any other country. Even when crowding 50. Most Chinese women are as well streamlined as when in their 20s. What women lose their girl ish figures soonest? Most people claim German women begin to bulge earliest. That's wrong. It Japanese Workers Seek Better Contract Tokyo (U.R) Some 100.000 Japanese employees of the U.S. armed forces in Japan Joined 30.000 others today in a 24-hour strike for a "better" labor ji tract. All passes for American mili tary personnel were cancelled. Commanders of the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force units garri soned in Japan ordered person nel to remain in base areas until Tuesday morning to avoid trouble. The first group of 30,000 Jap anese civilians struck Sunday morning in protest over new work rules concerning disciplin ary measures and settlement of grievances. is the Spanish women. In their 20s, Spanish women are sensa tionally attractive. The average measurements of Spanish women in that age group are bust, 36; waist, 25 and hips, 35. The aver age for Spanish women of 33 years and over are 40-31-38. In bringing to mind feminine names beginning with Z, I for got Zelma, Zona and Zoe. An unforgiveable oversight. How ever, I haven't forgotten Zelma O'Neill, the clever musical show actress who introduced the song "Button up Your Overcoat." Nor Zona Gale, the novelist who wrote "Miss Lulu Bett." Inci dentally, Zona, a smart looker, didn't marry the first time until she was 54. Neither have I for gotten Zoe Adkins, the play wright, who wrote Declasse, "Daddy's Gone-A-Hunting," "The Greeks Had a Word For It," and The Old Maid." RESIDENT of Long Beach, Cal., Lt. Cdr. James W.
