Thornton has named eight assistant attorneys general and seven former state and federal prosecutors to han dle the Multnomah county vice trials. Earlier. Thornton had named Dan M. Dibble, special assistant attorney general, to coordinate the prosecutions. Thornton said he had not yet made appointments of special prosecutors who will handle il legal bootleg establishments, bawdy houses, wiretapping and two other matters. He added that Assistant Attorney General Fran cis T. Wade would continue to take an active role in assisting and prosecutions. Handling the cases will be: Pinball cases: Raymond Cars kadon, former chief criminal deputy district attorney for Mult nomah county, and Assistant At torney General Arthur G. Kap lan, Portland. Police perjury cases: Gene Conklin, Pendleton, former as sistant United States attorney for Oregon: Assistant Attorney Gen eral Walter J. Apley, Salem, former deputy district attorney of Clackamas county; and assist ant Attorney General Lloyd G. Jammel, Salem. Call-girl cases: Tunis J. Wyers, Hood River, former district at torney of Hood River county; and Dale Jacobs, Oregon City, former deputy district attorney of Clackamas county. Maloney, McLaughlin and Langley case: Assistant Attorney General Leonard I. Lindas, Sa lem, former district attorney of Clackamas county; Ralph C. W. Wyckoff, Salem, former assistant attorney general; and Assistant Attorney General Peter S. Her man, Salem. Portland E-R center case: Rob ert L. News About Books From the Library National Aviation day is be ing observed today. According to Librarian Helen Webster, the Medford Public library has a number of excellent books which tell the story of man's conquest of the air from the Wright Brothers' first attempts to the latest developments in space travel. Two books giving varying as pects of the history of American aviation are Charles A. Lind bergh's "The Spirit of St. Louis," which gives his auto biographical narrative of the planning and execution of the first nonstop airplane passage between the continents of Amer ica and Europe, and Jean Pot ter's "The Flying North." Hers is the story of the amazing and amusing exploits of those famed flying heroes, the "bush pilots" of Alaska. A more recent book, "Flight," is published by the editors of Year, Inc., and is a pictorial history of aviation. Planes Described Descriptions of more than 800 planes, from the earliest models of DeVinci to present day jets, are given in Douglas Rolfe's "Airplanes of the World from Pusher to Jet." Another book of interest from a military point of view is "The World's Fighting Planes" by William Green and Gerald Pollinger. "The Corn plete Book of Helicopters" by D. N. Ahnstrom gives an ac count of how the machine works and how it is flown, with a star tling vision of the giant sky buses and convertiplanes which will be soon plying our skies. Two recent books on the ever popular subject of flying sau cers are Edward Ruppelt's "The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects" and Lloyd Mallan's "Men, Rockets and Space Rats." Ruppelt was chief of the Air Force project investigating Un identified Flying Objects and his book is written in a vigorous straightforward manner. Mal lan's book is a readable and ex citing account of the research and experimentation which may Oregon Cities Get Federal Grants for Urban Planning Seattle Federal approval of urban planning assistance grants for Beaverton, Coquille and Grants Pass, Ore., was an nounced last week by L. R. Dur kee, area representative, Seattle office of the housing and home finance agency serving the Northwest states. Studies will include population trends, land uses, arterial highways, off street parking facilities, prepa ration of subdivision regula tions, utilities and annexations. Match Local Fundi The federal grant of $4,200 will match local funds made available by the three commu nities. Herman Kehrli, director of the bureau of municipal re search and service, will super vise the program for the state planning agency. Federal funds authorized on a dollar-for-dollar matching ba sis under the housing act of 1054 ar limited to communities I having a population of less than 25,000 and to metropolitan or regional planning agencies. The University , of Oregon authorized by the state legisla ture as the state's planning agency for these purposes, has previously been granted match ing funds for the. cities of Al bany, Sweet Home, Forest Grove and for the Eugene Springfield metropolitan areas. Registration for Pupils At Roque River Scheduled Rogue River Registration for the coming school year will, be held at the Rogue River school Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Aug. 29 through 31, school officials reminded par ents in the district. All pupils enrolling in the first grade, and other elemen tary students who are attending Rogue River schools for the first time should register, scbopl of ficials said. High school students will re ceive class schedules for the coming year when they enroll. School officials urged parents of ninth graders to contact advisors to discuss and outline the pro gram of study for students dur ing their high school career. High School Students High school students will en roll between 9 a.m. and noon and between 1 and 4 p.m. Wed nesday, Thursday and Friday, at the school building, and be tween 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30. New students In the district from grades two through eight should register during the same hours in the elementary office in the old elementary building. First grade students should register Friday, Aug. 31, in the new building and should bring birth and health certificates, school officials said. Any of the above books may be borrowed from the Medford Public library or from the branches of the Jackson county library district. The average disabling illness of people over 65 lasts twice as long as that of persons 15 to 64 years of age, notes the Twen tieth Century Fund.
