News About Books
From the Library
National Aviation day is be
ing observed today. According
to Librarian Helen Webster, the
Medford Public library has a
number of excellent books
which tell the story of man's
conquest of the air from the
Wright Brothers' first attempts
to the latest developments in
space travel.
Two books giving varying as
pects of the history of American
aviation are Charles A. Lind
bergh's "The Spirit of St.
Louis," which gives his auto
biographical narrative of the
planning and execution of the
first nonstop airplane passage
between the continents of Amer
ica and Europe, and Jean Pot
ter's "The Flying North." Hers
is the story of the amazing
and amusing exploits of those
famed flying heroes, the "bush
pilots" of Alaska. A more recent
book, "Flight," is published by
the editors of Year, Inc., and is
a pictorial history of aviation.
Planes Described
Descriptions of more than 800
planes, from the earliest models
of DeVinci to present day jets,
are given in Douglas Rolfe's
"Airplanes of the World from
Pusher to Jet." Another book of
interest from a military point of
view is "The World's Fighting
Planes" by William Green and
Gerald Pollinger. "The Corn
plete Book of Helicopters" by
D. N. Ahnstrom gives an ac
count of how the machine works
and how it is flown, with a star
tling vision of the giant sky
buses and convertiplanes which
will be soon plying our skies.
Two recent books on the ever
popular subject of flying sau
cers are Edward Ruppelt's "The
Report on Unidentified Flying
Objects" and Lloyd Mallan's
"Men, Rockets and Space Rats."
Ruppelt was chief of the Air
Force project investigating Un
identified Flying Objects and
his book is written in a vigorous
straightforward manner. Mal
lan's book is a readable and ex
citing account of the research
and experimentation which may
