(ftiteritatimaJ Soxinipkoto) New High Set in Air Traffic by UAL Here A new high in passenger and mail volumes flown in and out of Medford was set in the first six months of 195S by United Air Lines, according to K. W. Cook, station manager. During the period, 22.743 pas sengers boarded or deplaned from United Mainliners, a 12 per cent increase over the same period in 1955. Mail volume was up 8 per cent to 44,543 pounds, and combined express and freight shipments, up 3 per cent to 107,208 pounds. Survival Test Turns To Reality Le Havre, France U.R) Thirteen U.S. airmen went on a survival test that turned out to be the real thing Monday. They were recovering here today from a stormy eight hours spent in fragile rubber boats on the English Channel. The servicemen set out in two rubber rafts from a lonely beach where the U.S. Air Force con ducts survival courses. The wind suddenly shifted and freshened, blowing the rafts out to sea. By the time rescue planes reached the area, fog cut visibility to one mile. A crew from the 66th Air Res cue squadron at Manston, Eng land, spotted the rafts IS miles from shore eight hours later, landed the seaplane on the chop py sea and took all 13 survivors aboard. Donkey Plugging Harriman Candidacy Chicago (U.R) A Democratic donkey named Franklin is here to help the candidacy of New York's Gov. Averell Harriman. Franklin, despite her name, is a jenny. She was brought up in a political climate. According to her owner, William Loghran of Joliet, 111., Franklin's mother at tended every Democratic con vention from 1936 through 1952. Loghran knocked out the back seat of his 1951 Candillac and put -a worn carpet on the floor to bring Franklin here from Joliet. She's been parading along Michigan ave., wearing a straw hat over her ears, , Harriman posters on her back and a red ribbon on her tail. Miss Universe at Democrat Convention Chicago (U.R) Carol Morris, 20, "Miss Universe of 1956'' paid a surprise visit to the Dem ocratic convention Monday night. The Ottumwa, Iowa, beauty sat with the Iowa delegation for an hour and a half. Earlier, she greeted Iowa delegates at Iowa headquarters in the Palmer House. Miss Morris was here en route to her home at Ottumwa Wed nesday where a celebration is planned to honor her victory in the universe contest in Holly wood several weeks aso. Medford Youth Wins In Quincy Contests 'Quincy, Calif. Wes Cook son, 16, of Medford, Ore., won top honors in the Paul Bunyan ax throw at the Pacific Coast Loggers championship contests here Saturday. Cookson is the nephew of Sam Cookson of Medford, who won the championship in 1953. Young Cookson outthrew his father, Leonard, but failed to outpoint him in other events. Leonard Cookson placed third in hand bucking and chopping. Martin Hedrick of Quincy was named champion logger for the second year. Dan Mayfield of Williams, Ore., placed second in hand bucking. Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Joy of Salinas, and Mr. and Mrs Herbert Schroeder of San Francisco. George Knowles of Eureka was a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Carlton recently. He boarded at the Carlton home some years ago and attended Prospect High school. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle McMurray of Medford were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hume Aug. 2. Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Knudsen of Medford are spending the summer at their cabin on Butte Creek. Mr. and Mrs. Herb - Carlton entertained their twin daughters and family recently with a pic nic at Lithia park in Ashland, the occasion being the girls' birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Harding have as house guest their neph ew and wife from Long Beach, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Floyd West on, who were married Aug. 1. Mrs. Weston is the former Mag gie Bernard of Long Beach. Miss Susan Galvin, who visit ed her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Wyles Berry, of "Rogue Woods," has returned to her home in San Diego. Bill Miller is spending some time in the state of Washington visiting friends in Seattle. He says in his news letter, in effect, that it doesn't much matter Seattle Operator Accepts Indictments Portland (U.R) Joseph P. McLaughlin, a key figure in the recent Multnomah grand jury probe into alleged vice and cor ruption, yesterday surrendered himself to officers here to be served with indictments stem ming from the grand jury inves tigation. The 58-year-old Seattle card room operator thus became the 30th person arrested as a result of the grand jury probe. McLaughlin was booked on two counts for conspiracy to cimmit a felony, one count of extortion, and four for commit ting acts grossly disturbing pub lic peace and morals. He immediately posted S9.000 bail and returnd to his Seattle home. Reprimand Given For H-Bpmb Talk Honolulu (U.R) Airman 1C Jackson H. Kilgore, 21, of Meadowview, Va., has been giv en an "administrative repri mand" for talking about the May 21 H-bomb test at Eniwctok. Maj. Gen. Sory Smith, com mander of the Pacific Air Force, said an investigation showed that Kilgore disclosed no secret information. Kilgore was the man who told a Honolulu newspaper that the big H-bomb drop of the spring test series missed its target by several miles. The Air Force sub sequently admitted the miss. Kilgore's commanding officer on Eniwetok administered the reprimand Monday. Air Force personnel in Hono lulu were astonished that Kil gore got off so lightly. They ex pected he would, face a court martial. Announcement of Kilgore's reprimand was telephoned to news media by a Pacific Air Force public information officer. WANTED BY FBI Among the FBI's "Ten most wanted men" is F 1 e n o y Payne, 47, who is charged with fleeing from Miss issippi to avoid prosecution for the crime of murder. He is des cribed as weighing 139 to 160 pounds, having a slender build, brown eyes, black hair and standing 5 feet 11 inches' tall. He is a negro and may be work ing as a laborer or farmer. The men were employed by Fleetway, Inc., of Burbank, Cal. The company refused to divulge their names and addresses until next of kin were notified. The body of one was burned almost beyond recognition. The other man was thrown clear of the wreckage. The plane, bearing French Air Force markings, had just contact ed Prestwick by radio shortly before midnight when it flew in from Keflavik, Iceland. Contact was lost and the plane crashed at the base of the 1,258-foot Dis tink Horn hill, 12 miles north east of here. Airport authorities ordered an inquiry. The average score of the typi cal bowler is 154. According to the American Bowling Congress, of more than 2.000,000 bowlers questioned, only one-tenth of one per cent had an average of 200 or better.
