Durling (Distributed by King Faarurea Syndicate. Inc.) What have you had to say over the telephone recently? Anything you wouldn't want your wife to hear? Or something that might be embarrassing if repeated in public by means of a recording? The use of hidden recording gadgets continues to increase. Those for recording telephone conversations are quite common. I recently heard of a house party hostess who had recording ma chines hidden all over the place to pick up conversations of her guests without their knowledge. She said it was for laughs but I view that claim with suspicion. Anyway, recording machines'are hidden in automobiles, offices, restaurants, night clubs and in homes. The situation has reached a point where anything you wish to be kept secret should be con veyed by the sign language. May I suggest that you keep the fol lowing quotation always in mind: If for a tranquil mind you seek. These things observe with care. Of whom you speak, to whom you speak And how and when and where. INFORMATION So you say you're a well in formed fellow? All right, the United States has had two bach elor presidents. James Buchan an was one. Who was the other? Also, tell us quick as quarter of a flash who followed Buchan an as president of the U. S. A. PLEASE NOTE If that qallant thoroughbred Nashua could talk he would puo..by address Mr. Leslie Combs, his timid manager, some-'-'-"t as follows: "Why humili te mt by Intimating I cannot carry over 130 pounds to vic tory? Discovery won the Brook lyn Handicap carrying 136 pounds. Tom Fool won it pack ing the same weight. Why, even Assault won it carrying 132 pounds. Were they better race horses than I am? I don't think so! Mr. Combs, you have made a sissy out of me and for that I will never forgive you!" AMONG THE MARRIED Were you a June bridegroom? Do you know why June is so popular as a period in which to effect a matrimonial alliance? It is named after Juno, known as the "patroness of happy mar riages." March is unpopular for weddings because it is named after Mars, the God of war. The thought, of course, is that those married in March might quarrel too much. My girl friend and I were married on March first. We do not deny that we occasion ally have disagreements. How ever, we are in accord with Tennyson"! view of the matter, namely: Blessings on the falling out That all the more endears, When we fall out with those we love And kiss again with tears! ASKING Queries from clients. Q. What is the world's record for low weight at birth for an infant who survived to become an adult? A. Couldn't say. How ever it might be held by Mar ian Chapman of Great Britain, who at birth in 1938 weighed only 10 ounces. She survived and is now a healthy adult and taller than her mother. Q. My husband claims an undertaker once participated in the 'Mrs. America" contest but he can't think of her name. Help, please. A. Mrs. Joan Bray of Niles City, Mont., who was "Mrs. Montana" in the 1955 contest is an under taker in her home town. HORSES AND WOMEN How many evening gowns did your wife buy last year? How about cocktail dresses? What does she do with her cast-off clothes? Do you consider her extravagant? Don't tell me, it is none of my business. However, your matrimonial mate might be interested in the following state ment made by Cyd Charisse, the determinedly glamorous film performer: "I am not extrava gant. It would have to be a very special party before I would pay S630 for a new dress. I prob ably buy a couple of dozen eve ning gowns, 12 cocktail dresses and a few suits every year. I always get rid of the old ones for charity auctions or give them to my maid or relatives." th n&i , ' 3 rT" t Wf ' -ng . t'ttlr" itlli rf ifll1iieeiii nur 'iee.Mjiii ii i ii Kiwanians Gather for Convention at Salem Salem U.P.) P. R. S. My youngest daughter, Jane, had a hectic ro mance with a young man who subsequently became interested in my older daughter, Francine, whom he is now engaged to marry. I fear greatly that there may be trouble in the future because there were some rather trying rows between Jane and Fran cine over this young man. I have suggested to Francine that she should have a quiet wed ding and arrange to live in an other town so that Jane and she will not be in the same circle until the marriage is well established. Francine makes light of my fears, and even talked to Jane about them, and Jane, too, pre tended to make light of them. But I have a presentiment of trouble in the future unless Jane is completely fulfilled by love and marriage. FRANCINE I have often quarrelled noisily with my sis ter and have always loved her. I am grateful to Jane for hav ing found my sweetheart for me. Jane is a very lively and at tractive girl and he fell hard for her, but she was never really in love with him. She was nat urally highly flattered to be pur sued by an older man of his standing and charm, but she really did not want him except as a convenient and flattering escort. They quarrelled almost every time they went out. I met him through Jane and have loved him from the start. He realizes fully that while Jane is a very loveable girl, she was not for him, and I feel en tirely assured of his abiding love. I think it would disturb all of us if Jane were obviously withdrawing from our midst, and I would even feel insecure JANE My mother's anxiety makes no sense to me. She can't get it into her head that I am no ideal young lady, that I went after him because I thought he would be fun to go out with, and that I never had any serious thoughts about him. His ardor ceased as soon as he met my sister, and I have never' really resented her attraction for him. except that I was selfish and petulant because I was put out by the loss of a generous and handsome escort. I am perhaps a little common er than mother sometimes thinks me, but not as scheming and base as she thinks me when she is in an anxious mood. THE' COUNCIL The . whole some attitudes of the two girls, which include love for each oth er and realistic self-appraisal, should minimize the mother's fears. The very fact that Fran cine discussed this question with Jane shows that they have a good relationship. A girl who can be as honest about herself and her motiva tions as Jane is probably head ed soon, for a good marriage. It is when people deceive them selves that they present the greatest danger in such delicate situations. Copyright 1956, General Features Corp.
