PLA SVI80 Winn"0 pP'Zf Angels Now On Top by 9Vi in PCL By john Mcdonald United Press Sports Writer It's beginning to look like the only hope for seven Pacific Coast league clubs is to borrow a page from the footballers and declare the Los Angeles Angels in eligible. The terrors of the PCL made it 15 wins in their last 18 games Thursday night when they scored twice in the ninth frame to nose out Sacramento 2-1. It was their 15th one-run victory of the season. Second place Seattle, mean while, reeled to 9'2 games from the top as the Vancouver Moun- ties ruined Pat Scantlebury s PCL debut with a 5-4 verdict. The other four clubs were idle and resume action today. Bilko Hit Ties Score Sacramento's string bean righthander, Joe Stanka, had the Angels blinking at his stuff for the first eight frames and had blanked the potent Cherubs on just two hits. Al Heist powered one into the right centerfield bleachers in the Solon's fourth to give Stanka a 1-0 lead. Then in the ninth the Angels came alive with Steve Bilko singling in Casey Wise to tie it up, and Jim Bolger belting home Gale Wade. Gene Fodge matched Stanka's mound job except for Heist's homer. He struck out 12 and gave up nine .hits for his 14th win against four defeats. Stanka (2-11) struck out nine and stop ped the mighty Bilko except for his ninth inning single. Mount Shasta Snowmen are proceed ing with plans to install a 2,000 foot long T-bar ski lift on Snow man's hill. Bids from eight major lift manufacturers in the United States have been asked by the club with the hope that the lift can be finished by Nov. 1 this year. When it is known that the pro ject can be completed in the next 90 days, the Snowmen will launch a huge membership drive aiming to bring scores of both skiers and non-skiers into the club. A finance committee, which includes prominent businessmen from southern Siskiyou county, was to have met this week to make final plans on the lift project. Among the debaters is Phils Manager Mayo Smith at right. Rushing in to help his fellow arbiter is Umpire Jocko Conlan. After some conferences, Delmore reversed his call and ruled Ashbura safe since Catcher VVes Westrum had "illegally interfered" with the funning coming home. Then it was the Giants turn to protest but they lost both the argument and the game, 4-3. Studs Rivals in SOL Could Knock Themselves Out of Race for Toga STUDS 2 col hed Spt Medford Cheney Studs want to win the Southern Oregon Baseball league pennant on their own merits but they'll be the last to complain if the other clubs knock themselves out of contention this week end. The Studs will sit this Satur day and Sunday out while the four other loop members tussle in three-game series. Bend vies at Coquille and Drain at Coos Bay-North Bend. Defending Champion Drain is the biggest threat to Medford leadership and bid for its first SOL title. But the Black Sox will have to win at least two of their three games this week to be in a position even to tie the Studs for the crown. Coquille and CB-NB are out of the championship running if they lose just one of their re maining six games this season. Ana me Dest xney can ao oy win ning all six is knot with Medford for the honors. Medford will round out lis Southern Oregon league slate here on August 18 and 19 against Coquille while Drain has the bye on the last round of regu lar play. If CB-NB can take two of the three of the current series from Drain, that will wreck the Black Sox chance for the title even though the Studs might be blanked in their action with Coquille. The Studs were idled for this week when Beaverton cancelled a two-game non-league series. 1 f 1 -. JOB JR. Rain ier Wednesday stopped in Port land en route to California yesterday and the pilot announc ed that he had set a new world's operational altitude record. Pilot W. T. Quinlan said he had tested his 47G2 Bell heli copter at altitudes higher than Mt. Rainier's 14,000-plus feet but that that was' the highest level reached for a takeoff and landing. Quinlan carried two surveyors to the top of the mountain to make calculations designed to establish Rainier's true size. He said his new 260-horsepower en gine enabled him to hover at the summit with the aid of ground cushion. For takeoffs he scooted along the snow to get speed. Quinlan, a native of Texas, had never worked on mountains before. He admitted that Mt. Rainier "looked like all of Texas standing on end." Ashland 9-3268 Friday, August 10, 1956 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE "THIRTEEN Armed Forces Said Flexible Enough To Meet Situations Washington (U.R) Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson said today that America's armed forces are flexible enough to meet "whatever situation might arise" with whatever weapons are needed. Against a background of ris ing Army concern that the na tion is becoming too deeply committed to air-atomic strategy and slighting conventional forces, Wilson said "emphasis ' nas been placed on weapons best calculated to deter aggression." That was an obvious refer ence to air-atomic power. But the secretary asserted that "our nation is not committed to a single strategy." He said "flexi bility has been retained to meet with the most appropriate weap ons whatever situation might arise." Wilson's comments were made in the Defense Department's re port to President Eisenhower and Congress for the year which ended June 30, 1955. The Penta gon gave no explanation for the almost 14-month delay in issuing the 300-page report. Reports for the six months period ending last Dec. 31, and the year ending last June 30 also are due. Today's report contained fore casts of new military manpower cuts which would have sparked big controversies if made public a year ago at a time when the forces already had lopped off 367,000 men in the preceding 12 months. That new cuts are com ing is common knowledge, just as is the report's forecast of higher defense spending in com ing years.
