The two clubs split recently at Reno with Sierra taking one game 5 to 4 and Rogue Valley the oiher 8 to 5. UO Selected By 16 Shrine Footballers Portland (U.R) One third of the 43 high school football stars who will perform in the 9th an nual Shriners game here Aug. 18 plan to enroll at the Univer sity of Oregon, a survey showed today. Seven expressed a preference for Oregon State while the others picked various schools or were undecided. Five backs and 11 linemen picked Oregon while three backs and four linemen picked OSC. Three members of last season's state championship Marshficld tpam have their eyes on the Eu gene campus, including Sandy Fraser, quarterback; Denny Baker, halfback, and Bob Peter son, center. '': - Together I iwV K V CHECK THESE FEATURES: 188 When a special research proj ect is inaugurated at the Univer sity of Oregon in September to study the effects of competitive athletics on boys between the ages of 8 and 12 years, Medford city schools will be among par ticipants. But the program will be nothing new for the Medford school system. The school's phy sical education department has for a number of years kept sta tistics on football injuries in its grade school athletic program. And only last year a study was inaugurated in which athletes are being compared with non-athletes. COULD SETTLE ISSUE . The U of O research, in which 4he university, Oregon State Medical association and the Athletic institute are par ticipating is aimed at resolv ing the talk both for and against competitive sports for youngsters. A wave of poorly supported criticism has made parents fear that their chil dren will be harmed by pai iicipaiion. The research could prove whether there is justifi cation in their fears. Frosh To Battle Rooks In Shrine Myrtle Bowl Coos Bay (U.R) The sixth annual Coos-Curry Shrine Club Myrtle Bowl football game will be played at Marshfield high school stadium Oct. 20 between the Oregon Frosh and the Ore gon State Rooks. Micro Cars At VV Track On Saturday . Hardtops, stock cars and micro midgets will compete at the Val ley View speedway, just north of Ashland Saturday night. Sev eral micro midget drivers and their cars will be in from Cres cent City, Calif., to race on a specially constructed track. Hardtop drivers will be gun ning to try to catch up with flying Crock Hunter who now leads his nearest .rival, Wayne Lemley, by 43 points in track title 'contention. Crock has 28S and Wayna 245. Bobby Wilcox moved up into the number three spot with 194 to. replace Bobby Jenkins ' who took the night off. Neil Wool dridge held on to his fifth place with 168 points and Johnny Jones, moved into the sixth spot from number seven. Rusty Phil lips moved back up one place to put him in number seven with 156 points. Bernie Miller is in eighth place with 151, and Allen Baus man came back to move up to ninth from 10th with 144 points. Jim Shippey is in 10th and Lead foot Lou Kurz, moved up an other rung on the ladder to 11th with 116. Bob Crowley is in 12th with 109. Sid Gillman of the Los Angeles I Rams has named Billy Wade as ! starting quarterback for the pro ; club's clash against a trio of service teams Saturday night in the Long Beach Municipal sta dium. Gillman announced Thurs day that Wade will call the in itial signals when the Rams meet a host of service stars from ; Ft. Ord, Camp Pendleton and the San Diego Naval Training Center. 15 Gunners Deadlocked In All-Guage Shooting Reno, Nev. (U.R) Fifteen marksmen were tied today with 100x100 scores as the all-gauge Skeet Shooting championships entered the second round. The first round of the three day event was shot Thursday. The contestants are aiming for as near-perfect a score they can get in 250 targets. ! Mrs. Carola Mandel of Chi i cago ran her total for the six ! day National Skeet tournament to 9961. the highest average ever , attained in American skeet his tory. Those with perfect scores in first-round competition in the all-gauge event included 12 Class AA shooters, one Class A shooter and two professionals. FEEL NO HARM Medford school officials ad mit some prejudice but they do not believe study will show the local competitive athletics setup harmful to youngsters in the grades. They say that, if harm is shown, they'll be the first to ad mit it and to make the necessary corrections and adjustments. Medford schools, under supervi sion of Lee Ragsdale, operate a controlled program. Sports are geared to boys of the same age level, size of fields is cut down, time periods are shortened and substitution for the most part is liberal. TWO REQUIRE DOCTOR Football is the only sport which has drawn much criti cism. Injury records have been kept over the' past eight years. They show only two in juries serious enough to have required a doctor. Ragsdale reported. One youth had his wrist stepped on (with tennis shoes) . and broken. Another SEVERAL CONSIDERATIONS Consideration in the U of O conducted research will be given to comparative strength, body structure, personality, motor performance, physiological ma turity, academic achievement and mental aptitude. In the Medford study begun last year by coaches and principals, youth ful athletes and non-athletes of the same body build and same scholastic standing were paired. The university project with trained testers and expert su pervision may encompass fea tures of Medford's own pro gram. Where it is short of aims of the local plan, the Medford PE administration intends to fill in the gap. - The UO project will be car ried out over a period of years. Funds are b e i n g provided through the university. South em Oregon college and the Ath letic institute. Funds for strictly I local study are from athletic j gate Teceipts and not from tax j moneys. For- the project the Medford schools offer some-! thing many other systems in the state do not possess" an athletic program on the fifth and sixth grade level. Light-burn Choice!
