(International) 753 Cases of Polio Listed During Week Washington (U.R)- The Pub lie Health Service laid today TS1 cases of polio were reported in the nation last week, com pared to 1,409 in the comparable week last year. Chicago reported 147 cases, of which 90 were paralytic. Only Illinois and Utah re ported more than 50 cases. So far in 1956, there have been 5,309 cases reported. In the game period of 1955, there were 7,929 cases reported. Some 328 of the 753 cases re ported last week were paralytic. Vine of the 48 states reported more cases last week than they had in the same week of 1955. They were Illinois, Utah, Mis souri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Lou isiana, Wyoming, Nevada and California. Colorado, Arizona and Oregon had the same number of cases as a year afo, and the remaining states had fewer. 32,000,000 Not Yel Getting Salk Vaccine New York 4U.R) The Nation el Foundation for Infantile laralysia said Wednesday that more than 32,000,000 Americans in the group most prone to get paralytic polio have not receiv ed Salk vaccine. The foundation said a nation wide survey revealed that of about 63,870,000 youngsters un der 19 years of age and expect ant mothers, less than 32,000,000 had even started the series of Salk shots by late July, when the survey was made. The peak polio season begins in late August. Br Shipment Gets Security Treatment London (U.P.) Grange Notes Jackson County Pomona Grange Only 52 persons braved the heat to attend the recent eve ning session of Jackson County Pomona Grange at Butte Falls. However, roll call of officers found only two absent. Leeturer Willie McLean re minded all Granges that the na tional Grange achievement con test closes Sept. 1 and reports must reach the state Grange sec retary by that date. She asked that subordinate lecturers let her know if they are receiving the material she is sending them. In his report on the state Grange session. Master. Herb Carlton reported all the Jackson county resolutions lost. Committee reports included an account of the trip made by the Delmar Smitha to Edmonton, Canada, and home by way of Idaho. Also a witty report of the horrors of our present tax set up was given by Clarence Davies. During the lecture hour, Po mona HEC Chairman Edith Poe gave a short talk en safety, stat ing that more fatal aeeidents oc cur on farms than anywhere else. Games and reading of jokes cop eluded the lecture hour. It was announced that Central Point Grange will put on all four degrees during September and other Granges are urged to bring their eandidatea. Roxy Ann Grange will also put on the third and fourth degrees at their sec ond September meeting. HEC Chairman Edith Poe reminded all Granges that judging in the canning contest will take place at the October meeting. The next meeting of Jackson County Pomona Grange will be Oct. 27, at 10 a m, at Eagle Point Grange. The special order of business will be election of offi cers, and Master Herb Carlton urges all members to attend. Central Point Grange The Central Point Grange has chosen Thursday, Nov. 8, for the annual turkey dinner this year. This was decided at the regular meeting held Aug. 3. Home Economics chairman ap pointed Mrs. John Niedermeyr and Mrs. Gaston Floux as co chairmen for the dinner. For the lecture hour, Delmar Smith gave some high lights on farming in Canada, Montana and on states they passed through on their recent vacation, fol lowed by some colored slides taken on the trip. Cleo Young had charge of the display table which had veget ables, some new varieties that were especially nice for freez ing. All Grange ladies are asked to get in touch with Mrs. Nieder meyer or Mrs. Floux regarding tne dinner. Exams Announced for Civil Service Jobs The civil service commission has announced applications are being accepted for several posi tions as male correctional offi cer, surplus disposal officer, sales specialist and engineer. Examinations are also offered for valuation engineer (mining), radio engineer, and geophysicist (exploration). Additional infor mation regarding the require ments and instructions for ap plying may be obtained from Chester W. Silliman, at the Med ford post office.
