South Fries; Severe Thunderstorms Hit Northern Missouri Bv UNITED PRESS The., South sizzled in a pro longed heat wave, severe inun derstorms hit northern Missouri nnri Southern Iowa and an im confirmed tornado struck the town of Centerville, Iowa. The Weather Bureau reported hat "a tornado or strong winds" hit Centerville near midnight Wednesday night, uprooting Dance Permit Refused; Rock 'n Roll Blamed rhestorfield Va (U.PJ A Chesterfield county circuit judge has refused to grant a dance hall permit because of "indecent" forms of dancing. Judge William Old denied the permit requested by night club manager Joe Harrison because of "rock and roll" dancing allow ed at the club. The judge said such forms of dancing are "indecent." Hollywood (U.PJ Actor Lewis Hayward claimed he was no stranger to hypnosis when he accepted the male lead in "The Search for Bridey Murphy," a film about hypnosis. Flying here from New York in 1947, Hay ward said he told a fellow pas senger, Los Angeles businessman Sol Andrews, that he had a ter rible headache. Andrews, an am ateur hypnotist, put Hayward to sleep for the rest of the flight and the actor arrived home feel ing fine. trees and tearing down power lines. Car Blown off Road Windows were smashed and a roof was blown from one buil ding. The only communication from the town was through a state highway patrol car which was blown off the highway. No deaths were reported. A thunderstorm dumped four inches of rain on Rockport, Mo., and downed power lines. Elsewhere in northern Mis souri, gusts up to 77 miles per hour lashed Kirksville and winds near 50 miles per hour hit Kan sas City. In Texas and portions of Ka sas and Oklahoma Wednesday, temperatures pushed into the high 90s and up to 100. Rain Deficiency A continuing drought in the Southwest left some areas with a rain deficiency up to 10 inch es for the year thus far. Dallas, Tex., which should have had a normal total of 22.56 inches, reported only 12.46 to date. The city contracted for a cloudseeding operation to pro mote rainfall, but there have been too few clouds. - U. S. weather forecasters said widely scattered thundershowers over the Southern Plains would extend eastward today to the southern Appalachians and northeastward, and would be come general through the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. I Solon Sees Long Life For President Eisenhower Washington (U.R) Rep Usher L. Burdick (R-N.D.) said Wednesday night that President Eisenhower will outlive some of those who fear he will not sur vive a second term. "Ike is a tough one," Burdick said in a statement. "Some of those who think his life span is now precarious will be planted long before the Pres ident even leans in that direc tion." 'Flying Flapjack' On Official Flight Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. (U.R) An official "flying saucer" has made its initial flight but the discus - shaped structure was attached to an air plane. The new "Flying Flapjack" is attached to a Navy WV2 super constellation built by Lockheed Aircraft Corp. It was described as resembling a flying saucer which has captured an airplane as it underwent the flight test yesterday. The 30-foot disc mounted atop the fuselage looks like a parasol. Actually it contains the most important part of the plane, distance . determining radar an tenna. The plane v was built for the Navy to test advanced ideas in flying radar stations. The super constellation is powered by four turbo-compound piston engines and was designed as a flying ra dar station to guard the nation against a surprise air attack. Roy Wimmer, Lockeed test pilot kept the odd-looking plane in the air for an hour over this test center. Lockeed technicians described the test "definitely successful. 10 New Polio Cases in Oregon Portland (U.PJ Ten new cases of polio were reported to the Oregon State Board of Health last week, the heaviest seven-day toll since last Decem ber. The reports brought the state's total for the year to 61, com pared to 109 for the same period a year ago. Highest previous weekly total was in December, 1955, when there were 11 cases. Dr. Gordon C. Edwards, act ing state health officer, said the reports "definitely confirm" the department's prediction that polio has started its annual in crease of mid-summer. The new cases occurred in Benton, Clackamas, Gilliam, Malheur, Multnomah and Uma tilla counties. Four cases were paralytic. Dr. Edwards urged Oregon ians in all age groups to avail themselves of vaccine supplies before the peak of the polio sea son is reached in September and October. American Home To Be Set Up in Moscow Oakland, Calif. (U.PJ A fully equipped American home, com plete with detergents and plas tic food covers, leaves for Mos cow today with the blessings of a Russian Orthodox priest and the city's mayor. The house is a prefabricated home built by a local contractor, Andres Oddstad. It caught the attention of one of a group of touring Russian construction ex perts last year. He arranged to buy the house and have it ship per prefabricated for construc tion in a Moscow suburb. On hand for the initial sendoff of the house from an Oakland nier were Mayor Clifford Blshell and a Russian Orthodox priest to bless the shipment. Sawyer Killed in Mishap At Mill Near Hillsboro Hillsboro (U.R) Marlin Lambert, 44-year-old sawyer, was killed yesterday at the Bateman mill near here. (U.PJ A hulking smoking iron beast roar ed through the countryside be tween here and Schenectady, N.Y., 125 years ago today. It couldn't have caused much less excitement than an invasion from Mars. The monster, coughing clouds of smoke and sparks, was the first steam locomotive to draw a passenger train in the United States. It scared crew, passeng ers, spectators and horses in the fields. Ouaint Affair The first passenger locomo tive, the DeWitt Clinton, was a quaint affair of iron, weighing slightly more than three tons. It was less than 12 feet long about the length of a modern automobile and huffed along on only four wheels. The engineer and fireman stood in the open, balancing gingerly on a dangerously nar row platform. Passengers were not any more comfortable or safe. They rode in two ordinary stage coach bodies, slung on special frames with flanged wheels to keep them on the track. They were at the mercy of fiery pine embers from the smokestack and of the track itself. . That first 15 miles of primi tive track between the two cities Brink's Trial Slowed By Defense Tactics Boston (U.R) Defense chal lenges, which have blocked any admittance to the jury box, sty mied progress in the trial of eight men accused of looting a Brink's money vault of $1,219, 000 six years ago. A total of 39 prospective jur ors, 19 of them Wednesday, have been challenged by attorneys de fending the men charged with the nation's biggest cash rob bery. In all, nearly 200 veniremen have been disqualified since jury selection began Tuesday. The steady volley of defense challenges was expected to delay trial testimony for at least two weeks. Only a handful of spectators have appeared at the grey, brick Suffolk County Courthouse de spite the sensational pre-trial publicity. Heat and monotonous legal exchanges drove all but three from Wednesday's session. La Grande Will Lose Rehabilitation Office Pendleton (U,R) The state division of vocational rehabilita tion said today that it will move its eastern Oregon office from La Grande to Pendleton Sept. 1. C. F. Feike, director of the division, said the move was a result of a survey which show ed more adequate service could be given to a larger segment of the population in eastern Ore gon with Pendleton as headquarters. The skeptics were on hand, Pear Promotion Plans Announced Portland Advance plans for the 1956-57 promotion program for D'Anjou, Bosc and Cornice pears were announced this week by R. A. Patterson, manager of the Oregon - Washington - Cali fornia Pear bureau. The pro gram was outlined and approved by the Pear bureau advertising and marketing committee last week. Following the pattern of the previous year's program, the one developed for this year includes three basic store promotions for winter pears. A special promo tion for Bosc pears early in Oc tober in eastern seaboard mar kets is scheduled. Point - of - sale material this year is new, Patterson said, with special banners for each promo tion. Consumer advertising will again be concentrated in local media having the greatest im pact in markets being worked by Pear bureau field merchan. dising representatives. School Bus Driver Gets Certificate A. E. Ranney, route 1, Jack sonville, who drives bus for Ruch and Jacksonville school districts, has been selected as Oregon's safest school bus driv er, according to C. W. Trout, sales vice president of Oneida products division of Henney Mo tor company, which sponsors the award. A special safety certificate will be awarded Ranney by the Nelson Equipment company, Portland, Oregon distributor for Oneida school busses. The firm has head offices and plant in Canastota, N.Y. Ranney, as a state winner, is a finalist in the year-long con test to find the nation's safest school bus driver, who will be announced next month. Missing Plane Found At Paso Robles Airport Salem (U.PJ Search for a light plane missing on a flight from Seattle to Englewood, Calif., was called off Tuesday when the craft was located at a Paso Robles, Calif., airport.
