PHOENIX Family Back From Vacation Br MRS. LILLIAN KNIGHT Phoenix Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mitchell and daughter Mary El len spent two weeks the middle of July vacationing and visiting in California and Mexico. In Chula Vista, Calif., they visited with their son Tommy and his family. From there they went to Tijuana, Mexico, to spend a few days before returning home. After returning home, the Mitchell family had as their house guest for a week Mrs. T. R. Vanderhoof from Law rence, Kan. Mr. and Mrs. Nels Seigler of Tacoma, Wash., visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Mit chell for about a week the lat ter part of July. They are for mer Medford residents. Mrs. Tom Caster is able to be up and around now and doing what housework she can. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Caster and family are staying with the Tom Casters while they are having their house painted. Mrs. M. J. Bergen had as visi tors last week her son Robert, of Monrovia, Calif., and her daughter, Mrs. lone Symore of Cayucos, Calif. While here they visited with another sister, Mrs. Alice Furnas in Medford. W. T. Hewitt last week cele brated his 83rd birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Inman and family and Mrs. Neda Fox of Central Point called at the Hewitt home for a few hours and he received cards and gifts from other rela tives and friends. He also re ceived a telephone call from his son Charles. Mrs. Clara Bjork is moving to Eugene to live with her daugh ter, Mrs. Arthur Kane, and family. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Carrillo, aaugnter (Jiona, and son "Blackie" of Rawley, Calif. called at the Guy Cobleigh home recently. Carrillo stayed with the Cob- Ieighs about 36 years ago and this was his first visit with them since leaving here when a boy. While here they made a trip to Crater lake. Neighbors of Woodcraft lodge and the Thimble club held a picnic supper July 19 at the home of Mrs. Walker Caldwell. Present were Mr. and Mrs. George Bourne. Mrs. Turpin, mother of Mrs. Bourne, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Claflin, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Parker, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Cook, Mrs. Maud Hos kins, Mrs. Guy Cobleigh, Mrs. Enid Carter, and the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell and their son Edwin. Keith Thompson has returned to the hospital near Ft. Carson, Colo., and his wife Barbara has resumed her duties at the Rogue Valley Memorial hospital. While here they visited Mr. and Mrs. Percy Walker at Albany, par ents of Barbara, and Mr. and Mrs. John Townsley at Milwau kee, grandparents of Keith. Raymond Thompson, son of Mrs. Dorothy Thompson, is quite ill with strep throat. Mrs. Ruth Judd of Portland Tisited at the home of Mrs. Dor othy Thompson last Sunday and then with other friends and rela tives in the valley before return ing home. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Hunter of Central Point called on Mrs. Dorothy Thompson Friday eve ning and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Koch of Ashland visited her Saturday. Mrs. Wilma Kennedy and Mrs. Keith Thompson spent the week end with Mrs. Dorothy Thompson and are helping care for Raymond while he is ill. Mrs. Elva Briscoe is feeling much better and recovering from an attack of virus pneu monia. Miss Nancy Whitlock of Aguanga, Calif., is staying with her grandmother, Mrs. Elva Briscoe this summer and plans to be with her through the fall and winter months. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Blevens and daughter Carol of Klamath Falls spent Saturday with Mrs. Elva Briscoe. Ronnie Robbins left last week for San Francisco where he will go to work. Mrs. Clarice Prince of Oro Grande, Calif., was a guest of Mrs. Elva Briscoe Thursday night. She came to take home a car belonging to her son, Boyd Bellamy, who is now stationed in Japan with the armed forces. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Calkins are back from the East and are now living in Medford. He re cently received his discharge from the service at Bainbridge. Md. Mrs. Calkins will be remem bered as the former Kay Dud- lev, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Dudley. Mr. and Mrs. "Abe" Willis and son Warren of Ashland have moved into one of the Mike Hef- fernan houses. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Heffernan are expecting their daughter-in- law, Mrs. Warren Wolverton, and her three children, Luana, Danny and Margaret Ann of Sun Valley, Calif., Tuesday for an extended vacation. Their son, Warren, is in the service and is now stationed in Ger many. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bohls of Medford were callers at the Mike Heffernan home Friday evening. They are former Phoe nix residents, daughter and son-in-law of the Heffernans, and Mrs. Bohls is now working as a nurse at Sacred Heart hospital Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carland returned July 30 from a 10-day vacation trip spent on the coast at the Sea Lion caves, Winches ter Bay, Coos Bay, Gold Beach. Brookings, Crescent City and Eureka. Number of Chicago Polio Cases Reach 516 Chicago (U.R) The case total stood at 516 today as this city entered the crucial week in its fight against the worst polio outbreak in its history There have been 11 deaths. The second round of Salk vac cine shots in the "crash" inocu lation program is scheduled to begin early in the week. The time lapse between the first and second shots was cut by health authorities "to give protection as quickly as possible." About half the victims of the unusually early outbreak have been children in the six-month to five-year age group. This groiip had little chance to re ceive the Salk shots before the outbreak. BUFFALO BUDGET Buffalo, N.Y. (U.R) This city's performance - type budget will be tested in the Orient. Budget Director Philip Baczkow ski has received word from the Formosa Provincial Government that it is planning to institute a similar budget. Last fall a group from Formosa visited Buf falo and spent considerable time learning the mechanics of the local budget. U.PJ Syria mobilized its armed forces today "tc face all possibilities at the side of Esypt." The official announcement to that effect by a Syrian Army spokesman was published in all Syrian newspapers. At the same time, Sheik Abu lyusor Abdin. the mufti and leader of Syria's Moslems, an nounced that "a holy Arab war against the West will be legal if the West attacks Egypt in the dispute over the Suel canal." Mexican Border May Be Closed Use Mail Tribune Want Ads San Diego (U.R) Gov. Braulio Maldonado of Baja Cali fornia was prepared today to close the Mexican border to Am erican tourists in order to clean up vice conditions in Tijuana, Mex., a border city 25 miles south of here. Maldonado told Mexican and American newsmen Saturday he is "sick and tired" of hearing complaints about prostitution, gambling and narcotics traffic in Tijuana. He said he has taken person al charge of a cleanup campaign. "If it is necessary to sacrifice economic interests to clean up Tijuana, we will close the bord er to American tourists," he said. "Perhaps we both will gain, you Americans in health and we in dignity." The governor's vice campaign was touched off by the July 26 murder of vice crusader Manuel Acosta Meza, coeditor of the newspaper El Impercial. Acosta Meza was conducting a drive against Tijuana's prosti tution houses and narcotics trade when he was murdered. A gun man shot the editor three times when the victim answered the door at his fashionable home. Monday, August 6. 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SSTEN Efforts Made To Renew Aluminum Strike Talks New York (U.R) Federal Mediator Joseph F. Finnegan holds separate meetings today with representatives of the alu minum industry and striking steel workers to renew bargain ing talks. Some 28,000 steel workers went on strike last week at twelve plants of the Aluminum Company of America and nine plants of the Reynolds Metal company. The strike halted 50 per cent of the nations aluminum output. Firebug Suspect Held in Manhattan New York (U.R) A 66-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being the firebug who set off a week end series of seven small church fires in Manhattan including a blaze in St. Patrick's Cathedral. Salvatore Sorrentino, an un employed laborer with a record of five previous arrests, who said he was once a theology student in Italy, was to be arraigned in court today. Police, who have booked Sorrentino on a formal charge of violation of the sani tary code, said they would rec ommend he be taken to Beltevu Hospital for observation. Police and firemen reported fire in four Roman Catholic and three Protestant Episcopal churches, all set with newspa pers and lighter fluid, and all apparently by the same person. No services were in progress and only a few worshippers in at tendance when the blazes flared. No injuries were reported. Stamford, Conn.
