San Diego (U.R) Gov.
Braulio Maldonado of Baja Cali
fornia was prepared today to
close the Mexican border to Am
erican tourists in order to clean
up vice conditions in Tijuana,
Mex., a border city 25 miles
south of here.
Maldonado told Mexican and
American newsmen Saturday he
is "sick and tired" of hearing
complaints about prostitution,
gambling and narcotics traffic in
Tijuana.
He said he has taken person
al charge of a cleanup campaign.
"If it is necessary to sacrifice
economic interests to clean up
Tijuana, we will close the bord
er to American tourists," he said.
"Perhaps we both will gain, you
Americans in health and we in
dignity."
The governor's vice campaign
was touched off by the July 26
murder of vice crusader Manuel
Acosta Meza, coeditor of the
newspaper El Impercial.
Acosta Meza was conducting a
drive against Tijuana's prosti
tution houses and narcotics trade
when he was murdered. A gun
man shot the editor three times
when the victim answered the
