Wednesday, July It. 1938 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE XWK Boat Mishap Fatal To California Boy Newberg U.R) A 16-year-old youth from San Lorenzo, Calif., drowned in Skookum lake, two miles south of here, yesterday afternoon when his small boat capsized. Police identified the victim as Fred Emmery. His body was re covered about an hour after the mishap. Emmery had accompan ied a Berkeley, Calif., family on a vacation trip here. His companions. Bill Dold, 22, and Crement Dold, 18, both of Berkeley, said they and the Em mery boy had going swimming at the small lake. The two brothers set out in a boat to cross the lake and pick up their towels which had been left on the opposite shore. They told police Emmery swam to an other boat and a few minutes later they looked back and dis covered the boat had capsized. Sen. Richard L. Neuberger and Rob ert D. Holmes, candidate for governor, yesterday criticized Gov. Elmo Smith ior not re questing federal aid for the flood-stricken town of Mitchell in central Oregon. Sen. Neuberger said he was "amazed'' to receive a letter from the White House stating that Gov. Smith had not yet re-1 quested the President to author ize federal assistance for the town. Neuberger Asks Aid Neuberger had sent a tele gram to President Eisenhower requesting disaster relief for the town, struck by a flash flood last Friday night. Neuberger ' said he received a reply stating that the President could not act . until he received a request from the governor of the state. In Salem. Gov. Smith said state agencies, including the governors office, were doing everything possible to ascertain the needs and requirements of the flood stricken town of Mit chell "When we find out what the needs are for those people, we will take whatever steps are within our power, both on the state and federal level, to re- ieve their situation," the gov ernor said. Representatives Present Gov. Smith pointed out that representatives of different state agencies have been in Mitchell and Fossil, county seat of Wheel er county, ever since Saturday afternoon. ' "We are proceeding under necessary federal regulations re garding declaration of disaster areas," the governor said. He promised to ask for disas ter relief, should it appear neces sary. ; "Neuberger, in my opinion, is guilty of cheap politics in trying to exploit the misfortunes of Mitchell and his actions should be viewed by the people of Ore gon in that light," Gov. Smith added. MID- r ; 1 I ' I Archeological Theft Attempt Reported The Dalles (U.R) Officials of the National Park service ; said today that someone had tried to steal a petroglygn tnat had been uncovered by arche ologists at the Wakemap mound. An attempt to break a 500 pound 'rock and take only the portion that contained an an cient carving of a mountain goat was discovered yesterday when archeologists made their way back to the area that had been blocked by high waters from the Columbia river. Definite chisel and hammer marks -were visible. The attempt to steal the carving failed, how ever, when the rock broke, leav ing half of the carving on the remaining part of the rock.
