Neuberger, Holmes
Criticize Governor
In Mitchell Stand
Portland (U.R) Two Demo
cratic leaders of Oregon. Sen.
Richard L. Neuberger and Rob
ert D. Holmes, candidate for
governor, yesterday criticized
Gov. Elmo Smith ior not re
questing federal aid for the
flood-stricken town of Mitchell
in central Oregon.
Sen. Neuberger said he was
"amazed'' to receive a letter
from the White House stating
that Gov. Smith had not yet re-1
quested the President to author
ize federal assistance for the
town.
Neuberger Asks Aid
Neuberger had sent a tele
gram to President Eisenhower
requesting disaster relief for the
town, struck by a flash flood
last Friday night. Neuberger '
said he received a reply stating
that the President could not act .
until he received a request from
the governor of the state.
In Salem. Gov. Smith said
state agencies, including the
governors office, were doing
everything possible to ascertain
the needs and requirements of
the flood stricken town of Mit
chell "When we find out what the
needs are for those people, we
will take whatever steps are
within our power, both on the
state and federal level, to re-
ieve their situation," the gov
ernor said.
Representatives Present
Gov. Smith pointed out that
representatives of different state
agencies have been in Mitchell
and Fossil, county seat of Wheel
er county, ever since Saturday
afternoon. '
"We are proceeding under
necessary federal regulations re
garding declaration of disaster
areas," the governor said.
He promised to ask for disas
ter relief, should it appear neces
sary. ;
"Neuberger, in my opinion, is
guilty of cheap politics in trying
to exploit the misfortunes of
Mitchell and his actions should
be viewed by the people of Ore
gon in that light," Gov. Smith
added.
