TRIBUNE ftiusial craves, Yankees By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer Stan Musial took over the Na tional league batting lead for the first time this season today in a powerful bid to make good his prediction that he'll win the seventh title of his career. The 35-year-old Musial ham mered out seven hits in nine trips as the St. Louis Cardinals split a doubleheader with the Philadelphia Phililes Sunday, to lift his average to .327 and take the lead from Cincinnati's Ed Eailey by one point. Musial, who also leads the National League with 69 runs batted in, has walloped 12 hits in 20 tries for a .600 mark since the All- Star interlude. Stan the Man drove in three runs with a single, double and homer to lead the Cardinals to a 9-1 win in the opener and had two doubles, a triple and a sin gle in five tries although the Rcdbirds dropped the nightcap. 7-5. Murry Dickson won his seventh game in the opener while Saul Rogovin was credited with his fifth win for the Phillies in the second game. Dark Supports Stan Alvin Dark, continuing his blazing post All-Star batting pace, supported Musial with three hits in the first game but was held to one hit in five at tempts in the nightcap. Freeman shut out the Giants for the four innings in the first game and pitched one shutout inning in the second game to pick up his sixth and seventh wins of the campaign. Carl Furillo drove in six runs with a two-run homer and a grand slam to help the Brooklyn Dodgers down the Chicago Cubs, 10-8, and snap a five-game losing streak. Don Newcombe scored his 12th victory tops for the NL, although relieved in the seventh. Ernie Banks hit a grand slam homer for the Cubs. The New York Yankees in creased their American league lead to lCVj games when they downed the Chicago White Sox. ' 2 1 and 6-5. Whitey Ford out pitched 13-ganie winner Billy Pierce in the opener and Hank Bauer came through with a two run single off Jim Wilson to take the 10-inning nightcap. The White Sox, who have lost eight straight, were within three put outs of a split when Fred Hat field homered in the top of the 10th. Indians Split Pair Dave Sisler, aided by Ike De- Lock in the ninth, pitched a two- hitter to give the Boston Red Sox a 3-1 win after the Cleve land Indians won the first game, 10-7. Ted Williams had two dou bles for the Red Sox in the night cap. Rookie Tito Francona snapped a 1-1 tie with a homer in the first game and smashed a grand slam in the nightcap to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-2 and 6-3 sweep of the Detroit Tigers. Ray Moore and Hal Brown pick ed up the wins for the Orioles. v.-ho displaced the Tigers in fifth place. Homers by Lou Berberet and Jose Valdivielso paced the Wash ington Senators to a 7-3 ver dict after Wally Burnette spun a six-hit shutout in his big league debut to give tne Kansas City Athletics an 8-0 triumph. The Studs took two of their three week end games with Co auille while Bend had similar success at Coos-Bay-North Bend. Results knocked Coquille and CB-NB out of a front spot dead lock with the Medfordites. Bend tightened the race although stay ing in the cell ir. Medford and Bend each won two Saturday conflicts and dropped their Sunday encount ers. Coquille's Loggers nipped the Studs 5 to 4 in 11 innings yesterday after the Studs had won 8 to 5 and 7 to 1 on Satur- cay. The Lumberjack polished off the central Oregon nine 13 to 0 Sunday. Bend won 8 to 7 and 2 to 1 on Saturday. Errors in the extra 11th in ning spoiled Stud bid for a three game sweep. The Loggers com bined Betnar's single, Worthan's fielder's option and two over throw errors for the winning run. The marker came on a close play at home. Medford took a 2 to 0 lead in the mix with fourth and fifth inning runs. Coquille used three hits, and an error and a flyout to go on top 3 to 2 in the bottom of the fifth. Eagle Point 0 Glendale maintained its first place hold and wrecked the Cheney Colts' attempt for a top spot tie yesterday by scoring a 4 to 2 verdict over the Cheney nine at Glendale. The loss dropped the Colts into fourth' place. Grants Pass and Cave Junction remained knotted for second, the Merch ants by clipping Eagle Point 9 to 2 and the Outlaws by edging Camp White 3 to 1. Ashland won its fracas with Butte Falls 12 to 4. Glendale took a 3 to 0 bulge over the Colts but the Cheney farmers made it 3 to 2 in the sixth on a walk, stolen base, single by Doy Gatlin and two wild pitches. However, Bob George homered for the Millers in the bottom of the frame to pad the Glendale margin. The loop pacers got a hit by Gene Stein, the aid of a miscue and two sacrifices for a first inning run. Two counters came in the fifth on hits by Stein and Monty Bates, a walk and a wild pitch. Siein 3 for 4 Stein hit three for four, Bates two for three and George two for four while Duane Miller, and Merwyn Hulbert held the Colts to five raps. At Camp White all the scor ing was in the first three cantos. In the first Larry Maurer trip led and Ron Maurer doubled for Cave Junction. Wayne Saffer's Holland Captures Europe Tourney Rome. Italy (U.R) Holland is the new European amateur base ball champion and will compete in the Global World Series at Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 7-12. Hol land, a newcomer to the tourna ment, won all four of its games in the round-robin European championships which ended Sun day night. Belgium was second and Italy third. I Mf- Yreka Host Wednesday Medford Cheney Studs will try for their second win of the sea son over the Yreka Indians base ball team Wednesday. The tussle with the Californ ians, an evening affair at the fairgrounds here, will be the first tilt at home in 10 days for the Studs. Medford's semi-pros .tripped the Indians 9 to 5 in an early June meeting. A Studs' four-run inning, helped by John Kovenz's two-run homer, was the big boost in the victory. The early season decision followed three Studs' victories over Yreka last year. Medford's club aims to continue the domination. Manager Bill Snavely may pick his starting chucker from among Dennis Bennett, Larry Root, Loren Cummins and Rocky Biscotti. All except Biscotti saw duty against the Studs in the early June mix. Bennett was the starter and took the loss. Possible Players Yreka may have its big catch er, Bill Kleaver, back in har ness. He was on the injured list and did not play in the previous scuffle. Infielders for the Indians may be Jack Clark, first base; Butch Pickard, second base; Willie Jones, shortstop, and Root, third base. Larry DeRushia, Dick Hock aday, Don Cotello and Dick De Avilla are those from who out fielders could be picked Adjustments in that line-up could mean Clark at first. Yreka is a member of the Northern Califor nia circuit and Medford of the Southern Oregon league Rogue Valley Gals Cop 2; Play Tuesday Rogue Valley girls' softball team downed the Basinettes at Klamath Falls 10 to 7 and 11 to 10 on Sunday and will face Red Britton's Klamath County All- Stars at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Eagle Point. Doris Hickson and Pat Sch roeder homered for Rogue Val ley in the first game, Diane Tut- tle hit three for five and Jean Bitterling two for four. The Rogue Valley club got six of its second game runs in the first inning and went to the field in the last of the fifth leading 11 to 3. The Basinettes then al most caught up with seven tal lies. Floyd Young, Talent, regist ered 96 miles per hour to take honors as fastest time for motor cycles. He also was top elimin ator of the day. The 58 entries in 13 classes raced as 1500 spectators looked on.- Seven motorcycles entered in 2 cycle classes. The Padres won the opener, 7-6, in free swinging fray and the Beavers evened it up, 6-4, in the second game. 39th Homer Steve Bilko smashed his 39th home run of the campaign for Los Angeles with a man aboard in the opener against Howie Jud son, who dropped his seventh decision. The Angeles' Gale Wade and Jim Bolger also connected a two- run homer apiece after their big first baseman had set the pattern. Dave Hillman gave up seven hits, four of them in the last inning, while going the dis tance for his 11th triumph against four setbacks. Milt Smith and Bill Glynn solved him for a pair of homers. Then manager Bob Scheffing s thumpers sewed up the nightcap with a six-run blast in the fourth inning that helped Gene Fodge stagger home to his eighth win although pelted for 11 hits. (U.R) Robust Rafer Johnson of UCLA and Milt Campbell of the Navy, twd dead - game, never - say - die athletes, today gave Uncle Sam a powerful one-two punch for the Olympic decathlon title at Melbourne. Johnson copped the National AAU title and Olympic trials Saturday night with 7,754 points in the 10 events the toughest grind in track and field de spite a knee injury suffered in the high jump Friday night. It was the fourth best in the world declathlon history. Campbell, the former Indiana football and track star who just missed qualifying for the Olym pic team in the 110-meter high hurdles, finished second with 7, 555 points, 199 back of John son. Fisher, another marksman from the coastal city, won the Oregon handicap with a score of 98.
