'U.R The thought of a travel poster tan may lure you to this island para dise, but one of the nation' leading skin specialists says Hawaii's special brand of sun shine can make you look older thsn your years. "Sun ages the skin," the tall, graying dermatologist said in an interview. "Too. much of it over long periods of time destroys the elastic fibers, or connective tis sues, in the skin and they be come degenerated. , "These fibers are like rubber bands. They hold the skin tight. So if you overdo it, even with a tan, the rays get down into the connective tissues." Avoid Noon-day Sun ' He warned that the sun "causes wrinkled skin and makes a 40-year-old woman look like she's 80." Dr. Lamb explained that sun rays in Hawaii are about the same as anywhere else in the United States. But he added that the big difference is that their reflection from the ocean greatly increases their intensity and burning power. "Moderate sun and bathing is healthful," Dr. Lamb said. "It is a wonderful feeling on your body. It has a tonic effect, and it helps form Vitamin C." However, the doctor cautioned sunbathers to "stay out of the intensity of the sun." "Go out in the early morning or late afternoon," he added. ' Dr. Lamb said if you must go out in the midday sun, smear your body with some type of sun burn cream "that will knock out the sunburn rays." For ethical reasons he couldn't suggest any special brand names, but he said to look on the label of the bot tle or jar for these protective chemicals: paramino benzoic acid or menthol anthranolite. Looking older than your years and suffering a painful burn aren't the only dangers of over doing sun bathing. Skin cancer is another big threat. Dr. Lamb theorized that island sun is prob ably responsible for giving Hawaii one of the highest skin cancer rates in the United States. Dr. Lamb said there are as many skin cancers in Hawaii as in Dallas, Tex., which is the heart of the cancer belt." The skin specialist, added: "There is no doubt in our minds that heat infra-red rays has a lot to do with causing cancer." . Democrats To Gel Fresh Farm Odor Chicago (U.R) Democrats will nominate their presidential candidate this year, as in 1952, just over the corral fence from the world's largest livestock yards. But the sprawling square miles of livestock pens will contribute only a "good, fresh farm odor" to the atmosphere, stockyards peo ple said, and if there's a smell within huge International Am phitheater it will come from burning political issues. "There's nothing here but a good, fresh farm odor within the yards," William Wood Prince, president of Chicago Stock Yards, said. Any lingering fragrance of the cattle, hog and sheep pens is re moved by air conditioning in the ampitheatre, officials p o i n ted out. The air is sweetened by a s p e cial wintergreen chemical which is fed into the ventilating system. One worker in the vicinity said, however, that an unpleas ant odor hangs over the area "if there's a rainy day, a heavy mist and a southwest wind" blowing from rendering plants west and southwest of the livestock yards. "Then we just have to pray that the wind changes direction," he said. The project, a continuing one. will make an extensive listing of local speakers available to program chairmen and other rep resentatives in the area. "We hope the speakers' file will make it possible for organ izations to plan interesting and worthwhile programs more easily," she said. Data Included The file will include such data as the speaker's subject, whether or not a fee is charged, and whether audio-visual or other equipment is used to supplement the talk. Included in the file will be representatives from business and professional groups, social groups, agriculture, indus try, merchandising, schools, churches, federal, state, county motorized scoops, loaders, dump- uu-tia iiia tiduiur-urawn irau- and city agencies, as well as community service and other groups. The librarian emphasized that the library assumes no responsi bility for topics selected or for bookings of the speakers. Actual scheduling and all arrangements will be made by the specific group presenting the program. Those who wish to be included in the speakers' directory, or who have suggestions regarding speakers who might be inter ested, should telephone the Med ford Public library at 2-2000. A visitor left some with an inmate, who de voured them with great gusto, despite moans from other prison ers.
