rOOTTEEIT MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ' Tuesday, July 10, 153? Ike's Decision To Be Candidate Again Made With Little 'Color' Hi By LYLE C. WILSON United Presi Correspondent Washington 01. R) President Eisenhower revealed today, with the least possible fuss and feath ers, that he still Is a candidate for reelection. . The Presi dent's televis ion report to the nation on his health last Feb. 29. was a pro duction number. It was preceded by a news confer- wiison ence announce ment that he would run again. And. that, too had a preliminary buildup for which White House Press Secretary James C. Hag- erty can take a bow. As the day of public decision approached last February, ten- sion increased around the White House. Hagerty and other aides almost gloomily said they didn't know the answer to the big ques tion and they weren't laughing when they said it, either. Gloom Now Gone It is fair to say that there wasn't much if any anxiety or tension among the White House staff after results of Mr. Eisen hower's operation became known. AH or most of them had that gone feeling in their stomachs for a few hours when the chances were as good as even, anyway, that the Presi dent's abdominal obstruction was malignant. There was no malignancy, and relaxed now is the word best to describe the White House crew. They have no doubt the Presi dent can win. The United Press was in formed that . Mr. Eisenhower would resume a full pre-opera-tion schedule on his return from Panama on July 23 or 24. That will include a daily calling list and the usual White House busi ness, subject to the doctor's or ders for a brief mid-day rest. Nehru Incident Recalled The Panama journey to a meeting of heads of Pan Ameri can states fits into the White House strategy of public evt- dence of the President's ability to carry on. Barring the inci dent of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cancelled visit to Washington, the report ing of Mr. Eisenhower's illness and convalescence seems to have been complete. The Nehru inci dent may have been on the up and up, too, but there are some who have doubts. The public was told that Nehru cancelled his plans to come to New Teachers Named Af Ashland Schools Ashland Dr. Howard Balder- stone, newly appointed superin tendent of Ashland public schools, has announced the ap pointment of six high school and four elementary teachers in the Ashland school district. Secondary teachers added to the staff at the junior and senior high schools are Bruce Bray, elementary music supervisor from Albany; Miss Elearfor Robi- son, junior high girls physical education instructor from Illi nois; Gerald Eurick, commercial teacher recently graduated from Lewis and Clark college; Miss Lenise Christopher from Al bany; Harry Wright, science in structor from Ontario; and Rob ert Palmer, English and social studies instructor recently grad uated from Lewis and Clark college. New teachers in the elemen tary schools include Mrs. Mary Myrick of Ashland who has tuught before in Ashland schools; Neil Richardson, a 1956 Southern Oregon college gradu ate; Jean Lindstrom, also a SOC graduate; and Miss Carol Legg who previously taught in Uma tilla county. QUICK FRECKLED HAND Los Angeles (U.R) Ronald H. Passoe, 25, a real estate in vestor, told police all he knew about the man who robbed him Monday was that he had a frec kled hand. Passoe said all he saw of the robber was the hand that grabbed $1,063 in cash while the other hand held a knife to Passoes neck as he sat at his desk. Since World War II women auto drivers have increased 51 per cent, men less than 30 per cent. Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport Washington after Mr. Eisenhow er's operation. There are some indications that he was maneu vered into the cancellation by the State Department but polite ly accepted responsibility for it himself. As it lies, Nehru and not Mr. Eisenhower is respon sible for cancelling one of the President's vital foreign affairs engagements. That could be important in a presidential campaign in which the Democratic party will pound hard at the issue of Mr. Eisen hower's health and the chance that he may not complete a second term, if elected. Rogue River Man's Car Falls in River Grants Pass A Rogue River man who tried to help a lady motorist in distress wound up as the real victim of a series of events at Savage Rapids dam yesterday. State police said James Bailey of Rogue River tried to aid Leah Wood of Grants Pass in getting her automobile back on the highway. She had driven down a steep grade along an old trail made during rehabilita tion of Savage Rapids dam to avoid a collision on Highway 99. Bailey's vehicle became lodged or a high center and he was try ing to free it by jacking up the wheels on one side. The car top pled into the river in deep water just above the dam, police said.
