(U.R) An ex pert in children's literature says youngsters today need "good strong books for ballast" in a world filled with the easy enter tainment of comics, movies and television. Prof. May Hill Arbuthnot of Western Reserve University, au thor of an anthology of chil dren's literature, said she was talking at ut books that "stretch his mind, lift his spirit and give him something to grow on. "Some of the mass entertain ment provided for children is good, some is banal and some is downright violent," she told a recent conference on reading at the University of Wisconsin. "All of it does possess the saving grace of moving fast so that it can be said to go in one eye or ear and come out the other, She recommended four tests for choosing the best of the "strong books:" 1. They should be books with such memorable characters as Jo March, Heidi and Tom Saw yer, "who seems as real as the folks next door.' ' 2. They should have strong themes about something impor tant to the child. "Right now," she said, "there seems to be a pernicious anemia of themes and plots at the youngest level. A rash of 'awareness' books about wetness, coldness, sweetness and I the like has flooded the mar ket. These are not literature, 1 call them 'so what' stories." Righteous Are Strong 3. They should have a strong plot to carry out the theme. 4. They -should have good prose style. "Children are not conscious -of style but they re spond to it as they do to a smile," she said. These books, she said "should stimulate the child's curiosity, keep alive his sense of wonder, his feeling that it's good to be alive, that life is a high adven ture. "They should minister to his zest for life, that God-given friskiness that takes such a lot to fjuell. They should develop his sense of fun, his awareness of life's absurdities and tragedies and of the need for laughter and compassion." She said picture books for the youngest children should help orient him to his world, and sto ries of strong family life are good right up to adulthood. "Fairy tales have a definite place in the modern child's world," she said. "This genera tion, especially the boys, are in danger of hardening into a too tight literalness too soon with their precocious interest in sci ence. They need to believe that I the righteous have the strength oi lu because they are righteous. They need to realize that from time to time there still arise ogres among us who must be demolished." Biology Teachers Attend Conference Mrs. Ruth Gray, 122 Valley- view drive, and Mrs. Delphie Cox, 611 South Oakdale avenue, attended a three day conference of the National Science Teachers association held in Corvallis. Mrs. Gray and Mrs. Cox are biology teachers at Medford Senior High school. After the conference Mrs. Cox left for Eugene where she is attending summer school at the University of Oregon. each pattern for lst-class mail ing.
