r FOUR MZDFORD (OFEGOrf) MAIL TRIBUNE V Thursday, Jon 28, I9S6 Marilyn Monroe Finding New Happiness in Forthcoming Marriage To 40-Year-Old Pulitzer Winning Playwright New York 01.19 Marilyn Monroe, about to become a bride for the third time, ii "bubbling over" with happiness. It was just 14 years ago that the made her first try for love and companionship in a teenage marriage. The June bride of 1942 was Norma Jean Mortenson, a foster child who later described her marriage to 21-year-old James Dougherty as "for convenience only." It kept her from being returned to the orphanage. Now Woman of 30 Now Norma Jean Is a woman of 30, and any similarity between the brown-haired bride of 16 and the silver-haired movie star who is marrying Arthur Miller, ore of the nation's top play wrights, is strictly accidental. Miss Monroe would like to for get about her unhappy child hood and her unfortunate first marriage, which ended in di vorce after four years. Her name has become syn onomous with sex appeal, but her romances have been far rarer than many glamorous mo vie queens. Her career came first for years after she got her first Hollywood attention in 1947. Men fell in love with her, and the struggling starlet went steady with two of them she "liked very much." One was Freddie Karger, a composer and bandleader who later married Jane Wyman. Another was her agent, Johnny Hyde, who died before she became famous. But there were no engage ment rings or marriage promis es until a baseball player named IT? (Vodka in orange juice) fa m It leaves you UffiM 5s breathless mirnoff "VODKA inpfAAf. Father Complex Friends said Marilyn had a "father complex" about the men in her life, still searching for the security and love she never had as a child. ' DiMaggio, after that first date in a Hollywood restaurant in 1952, threatened to become an other of the escorts she only "liked very much." They dated queitly for two years before Marilyn decided Joe was the man she wanted to marry. She talked about having a family and staying home at nights with Joe to watch tele vision. But nine months after they Monroe's Fiance Given Ultimatum To Divulge Names Roxbury, Conn. (U.R) Play wright Arthur Miller went ahead with plans today for his marri age to Marilyn Monroe despite an ultimatum to purge himself of a possible contempt "of Con gress citation. The House Un-American Acti vities Committee Wednesday gave Miller 10 days in which to divulge names of alleged Com munists he once knew or face possible prosecution. The author of "Death of a Salesman" also faced passport troubles with the State Depart ment which may prevent any European honeymoon with the curvaceous actress. But in Connecticut, blood samples of the playwright and actress were taken by Miller's cousin. Morton Miller, to the state laboratory at Hartford as required' by state law before marriage. Given 10 Days The House committee voted the contempt citation ultimatum by a unanimous 6 to 0. But mem bers said even if Miller refuses to comply with the demand there will be no attempt to inter fere with his marriage plans. Miller was given "10 days to answer the questions he refused to answer ... in order to purge himself of contempt and elim inate a possibility of contempt proceeding." The playwright admitted to past Red-front associations in an appearance before the House committee last week but said "his conscience" prevented him from identifying writers he once knew as Communists or Red sympathizers. Green Peter Dam Shift To Be Aired Sweet Home U.R) A public meeting here tomorrow night will discuss with Army engineers the possibility of shifting the lo cation of the Green Peter re regulating dam from White Bridge to Foster. Engineers say that the change in location would not affect the location of the main Green Peter dam but would more than double the power output and also would provide more adequate flood con trol on the Santiam. The change was first suggest ed by Army engineers. The hear ing was called to determine local views on the feasibility of alter ing the original plan. The new site is on the south fork of the Santiam. An earth filled dam, nearly a mile in length, is proposed. The White Bridge dam on the middle fork of the Santiam and another dam on Wiley creek would be abandoned if the new location is adopted in the final plans. AT YOUR GROCERS nounced. The famous pair had been living on separate floors of the house for three days. ' DiMaggio left, suitcase in hand, walking through the group of reporters and photo graphers. He would never come back to that house, he said. Cold and Indifferent Then Marilyn, excited, weep ing, hanging to the arm of her attorney. Her husband had been cold and indifferent, she told the judge when she got her di vorce. She had found neither the love nor companionship she sought. She'd been married to her career, she half joked to a re porter, and moved to New York City to begin a new phase of her life. The 'change brought many things a company of her own called Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc.; a white-walled, white-carpeted apartment in a luxurious neighborhood; a new group of friends including some serious artists and a sur prising romance. Arthur Miller, a tall, lean 40-year-old writer who won the Pulitzer Prize for "Death of a Salesman," met Marilyn first in 1951, when he visited a Holly wood movie set. They met again at a friend's apartment after she moved here. Long Beach, Calif. (U.R) James G. Slep of the Altoona Pa. Mirror, was elected presi dent of the Association of News paper Classified Advertising Managers at the organization's 36th annual meeting here Wed nesday night. She was so quiet about the romance until they announced it last week that I don't think even those closest to her knew for sure they'd get married," one friend commented. "But now that it is out, she is bubbling over with happiness. She talks about him all the time. I've never seen her so happy.' Whether she would give up her career or not "never was an issue," the friend said. Miller approves of it, even the cheese cake pictures. "It was completely false that he objected to those publicity pictures of her in scanty cos tumes recently," the friend said. The talented writer will have a chance to see how he likes be ing married to a working movie star very shortly. They plan to combine their honeymoon in England with the first produc ing venture of Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc., which is a movie co-starring Marilyn and Laurence Olivier. mar u's 2 f i: -THIS CAKE ol Vt PHiq when you buy two at usual prict Why Wo Offer You This Great Saving W txliev, ana you try SwoetHeart, you'll ' nevr ba happy with any other soap.
