1 Monday, June 25. 195S MEDrORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Northern, Southern Democrats Continue Strain; No Split Seen Atlantic City, N.J. (U.R The ml tug-of-war between North ern and Southern Democrats kept a strain on the party today but there were no signs of real eager-nest lor a split in the ranks. Pressure and counter-pressure was evident among Democratic governors on hand here for the 43th annual Conference of Gov ernors. After week end prelim inaries, the "non-political" con ference moved today into dis cussion of such mutual state problems as education and high ways. , The conference actually gave Gov. Averell Harriman of New York a chance to court uncom mitted Democratic governors in his challenge to Adlai E. Steven son for the Democratic presi dential nominations. Invites Fellow Governors He invited 24 of his fellow Democratic governors present to drop in to .his hotel suite Tues day evening. But if Harriman had any tricks up his sleeve to pull a political coup this week, he was not yet ready to show them. The Democrats admitted free ly they expected to talk some k politics this week. Republican governors stuck to the party line that President Eisenhower will run and win again, whatever the Democrats did. In a series of news confer ences, Harriman and Govs. G. Mermen Williams of Michigan and Robert B. Meyner of New Jersey predicted the Democrats will write a party platform that the south will accept. No Walkout Talk None of the three "liberals" would admit the possibility of Mysterious Objects In Oregon Sky Traced Oceanlake, Ore. (U.R) The Coast Guard swung into a sea and aerial search along 50 miles of Oregon coastline here yester day for a pair of "mysterious" white objects in the sky. The search started when a coast resident reported sighting two white objects, possibly para chutes, drifting to the surface of the Pacific. The reports expanded and soon included a cloud of smoke on the horizon and the hearing of a plane overhead shortly be fore. Coast Guardsmen finally traced the objects of mystery to a point called Roads End, vhere sure enough two white objects hunjr in the sky. The objects were a pair of kites safely anchored by two small boys while they played on the beach. The lads were instructed to haul in the kites for the day. Southern walkout from the national convention. And none would make any rash forecasts about the chances of a Democrat to carry their own states against President Eis enhower next November. Williams said the candidate is secondary to the platform and that he thinks Mr. Eisenhower can be beaten. Harriman conceded that he is not the "candidate of the South" for the nomination, but he would not identify Stevenson, who has much Southern support, as that candidate. Could Gel Negio Vote Freedom from Southern back ing could mean the support of big northern states with a sub stantial Negro vote. The three governors Insisted Ridder Said Improving From Auto Accident London (U.R) American newspaper executive Victor Ridder, 70, was reported "much improved" today from injuries received in an automobile acci dent. His son, Walter, Washington correspondent for the New York Journal of Commerce, said his father was "coming along nice ly" at London Clinic. Ridder is vice president and a director of the Journal of Commerce and has interests in other publications. that the Democratic platform must contain a declaration of support for the Supreme Court decision outlawing racial segre gation in public schools. There was disagreement from Mrs. Green Sees Ike Losing Feminine Vote Washington (U.R) Rep. Edith S. Green, (D-Ore.), said yesterday she believes most women will not vote for Presi dent Eisenhower because they "won't fall for the Madison ave. approach" to election cam paigns. She referred to the practice of the Republican national com mittee of calling upon promin ent New York advertising firms for campaign advice. She also said women were more concern ed than men about the presi dent's health. But she said that she could not remember getting any let ters in her office regarding the President's "health or popular ity." Mrs. Green said she thought there was "no disadvantage" to being a "woman in Congress. But said a "few members" of Con gress would like to "see the 19th amendment repealed." The 19th amendment to the constitution gave women the right to vote and hold national office. Gov. George Bell Timmerman Jr., of South Carolina, who is trying to promote a Southern unity movement. He denies he is trying to promote a third party. Democratic Exploratory Session Timmerman announced that some Democratic state chairmen from the South will hold an exploratory session soon, prob ably at Atlanta. He told newsmen that letters containing the South Carolina proposal went to governors, party officials and members of Congress in 11 states. He said only Sens. W. Kerr Scott (D N.C.) and Walter F. George (D-Ga.) and an unidentified House member objected. It is known however that Sen ate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson has replied that he Ed Geary Acting Governor. of Oregon Salem (U.R) House Speak er Ed Geary of Klamath Falls was acting as governor of Ore gon today while Gov. Elmo Smith was attending the annual governor's conference in Atlan tic City. Geary arrived here this morning. Geary will go to Astoria Wed nesday to inspect anti-aircraft battalions of the National Guard, now in training there. wants no part of the South Caro lina plan. It appeared that Timmerman had not seen the Johnson replay or that it was couched in such vague language as to be inter preted as a favorable response. Michigan Governor To Speak at Salem Salem U.R) Gov. G. Men nen Williams of Michigan will speak Saturday before Marion county Democrats.
