Record Attendance Set at Bible School Closing exercises of the Daily Vacation Bible School of the First Baptist Church will be held Friday, June 22, at 7:30 p.m. Ac cording to the pastor, the Rev, james w. iseely, this years school has had the largest at tendance of any in the church's history. June 22. 1958 First Services for New Methodist Group Will Be Held Sunday First services for a new Metho dist congregation in Medford, which has been named St. Luke's Methodist church, will be held Sunday. The services will be in Bigham hall, the 4-H building at the county fairgrounds. The Rev. John A. Taylor, a recent graduate of the Boston university school of theology. has been sent here as minister of the new church. He and his wife of one month are living at 405 V4 J st. Plans for the church have been discussed for about five years by members of the congregation of the First Methodist church who felt that a second Methodist church was needed on the east side of town. A site has been Renanah Choir To Give Concert Here The Renanah choir of Simpson Bible college, San Francisco, will give a concert in sacred mu sic at the Community Bible church, Fourth and Alder, Cen tral Point, on Sunday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m. The choir will make its ap pearance here at the invitation of The Rev. Paul O. Kroon, pas tor of the local church. Russell J.- Marshall, head of the music department of Simp son Bible college, will direct the choir in a repertoire of choral numbers and hymn arrange ments. Some of these include "Sing Unto the Lord," "Dark Waters," "Day of Judgment," "Jesus Shall Reign," "The Holy City," "Restoration," "Go to Dark Gethsemane," "O God, Our Help in Ages Past" 'and others. There is no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be received. Bible School Will Continue Next Week Daily Vacation Bible School will continue at ' the Pilgrim Holiness Church, East Jackson at Bessie St., June 25 through 29, under the direction of Mrs. Don Little. There are three departments in the school: Mrs. Sherman Moore leader of the junior and intermediates, Mrs. James Pley er primary, and Mrs. Carl Alex ander beginners. The combined groups will pre sent a program Friday evening, June 29, carrying out the theme of the school, "The King's Ad ventureland." Sunday, June 24, the Gideons will have the morning worship hour, with Mr. H. C. High, the local Gideon camp president, as speaker. Sunday evening. Rev. James Moore of Portland, gen eral evangelist of the denomina tion, will be guest speaker. Coffee Hour Will Honor Kennerleys There will be a coffee hour at the Congregational Church Sun day at the close of the 10 a.m service. Sunday School and church worship are both being held at this hour during the summer period. The sermon topic by the Rev. Thomas Mc Camant will be "The Living Universe . Guests of honor at the coffee hour will be Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam H. Kennerley, and the choir. Mrs. Kennerley, who has been choir director for two years, has resigned. She also served as organist. Miss Susan Brill will be the church organist during July and August. BIBLE SCHOOL PROGRAM The Vacation Bible School demonstration program will be presented Sunday, June 24, at 10:30 A.M. at the First Church of the Nazarene, Holly and First. Each of the three departments of the school will have part in the program. A skit entitled "Who Owns our Church" will be given by the Primary Depart ment. The public is invited. NO SERVICES There will be no Sunday eve ning services at the Trail Com munity church, June 24. Definite Plant While general discussions of the need for a new church have gone on for some time, it was about six months ago that defi nite plans began to shape up. Congregation members talked with the Rev. Meredith Groves, Eugene, district superintendent of the church, and with the Rev. Ray Balcomb, minister of the First Methodist church. They then notified the bishop, as plans were worked out, and he ar ranged to have Mr. Taylor come here to serve the church. Officers of the' church, which was formally organized in May, include Ben Schmidt, chairman of the committee; Walter Hig- gins, vice chairman, and Mrs. William Wilson, secretary-treas urer. A formal transfer service was held at the First Methodist church last Sunday. . The church will have three sources of initial financing, from the national church body, from the Oregon conference, and, principally, through the congre gation itself, which is largely self-governing. Central Point Bible School Program Set The Vacation Bible School program of the Community Bible Church, Central Point, will be held. Friday evening, June 22, at 7:45. The Bible School has been under the direction of Miss Ila Mae Higinbotham and assisted by local help in all of the de partments. Parents and friends are In vited to attend the demonstra tion program which ii planned to give a brief review of the work done with the boys and girls duriftz the ten days of school. CLOSING PROGRAM The First Church of God will hold its closing program for the Vacation Bible School on Fri day, June 22, at 7:30 p.m. Every class will present work on the theme, "Friends of Jesus". (U.R) Newcombe Watchorn, 85, gained a divorce from his wife on the ground that she told him she was 61 years old when she was really 71. Watchorn said he learned the true nature of things because his wife's birthdate was listed on her previous husband's tombstone. APPLEGATE-JACKSONVILLE - Summer Vacation Plans Told Br HELGA MITCHELL Applegate - Jacksonville Summer is here, and many local people are planning, or have left for, their summer vacations. Miss Mary Williams is spend ing two weeks vacation at Riv erside, Calif., with her sister, Mrs. Ed Steiger. She also will visit relatives at Long Beach. Billie and Bonnie Hard left recently for Santa Cruz, Calif., where they will spend the sum mer vacation with relatives. They were accompanied south by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hard. Mr. and Mrs. Chester McDon- ough are spending a short vaca tion period in Reno. Mrs. Lance Offenbacher, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Winningham, and Mrs. Howard Helgeson recently took a trip up to Squaw lake. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Dorn of Cathedral City, Calif., who are vacationing in the Sterling Creek area, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Port last Sunday. Ap proximately 40 years ago. Port and Dorn worked together dur ing the early days of the Forest Service in this vicinity. Last year, the Dorns circled the globe by plane. Dorn is a brother of Dave Dorn in Jacksonville. The George Redheads are ex pecting Mr. and Mrs. Harry Scott of Redlands, Calif., next week. Mrs. Redhead and Mrs. Scott are sisters. Gary West, son of Mr. 'and Mrs. Fred West, underwent an appendectomy last Monday night. At the last Little Applegate Knitting club meeting which was held at the home of Mrs. Otis Buck, numerous women threw "calorie consciousness" to the wind as they were confront ed with strawberries, cream puffs, cake and whipped cream Since that meeting, perplexed husbands reportedly have been pondering the sudden switch to lettuce, carrot sticks and boiled eggs on the dinner table. . Mr. and Mrs. Robert Winning ham and their son Mark of Se attle, Wash., recently visited the Jim Winningham. residence. Mrs. Anne Hancock refers to herself as a "maniac" since she was born in Maine. We refer to ourselves ' as a "hamburger" since we were born in Hamburg, Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Couch and their daughter, Jackie Sue, of Mar Vista, Calif., arrived at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Couch last Saturday morning. While here, the junior Couchs are looking for a home in this vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Paul C. The Lees also visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel E. Serry of Jacksonville. Visitors at the Mansel Milam residence recently were Mr. and Mrs. W. R. West and their daugh ter Patricia, and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Yarbrough and their three children, all of Mena, Ark. Mrs. Milam, Mrs. West, and Mrs. Yarbrough are sisters who have not seen each other in four years. The Yarbroughs have now moved to the Central Point vi cinity, and last Sunday the Mi lams and Wests visited them in their new location. The new sign which has been placed in front of the Hunter and Best sawmill at Ruch by the J & R Equipment service is more than just a mere sign, it is a painting. Louis Arnold, who has always had a yen for paint ing, painted the scene depicting the mill and its equipment. Many local residents have commented on the beauty of the painting and several say that Applegate now has an artist. The next meeting of the Little Applegate Knitting club will be at the home of Mrs. John Sutton on Upper Applegate on Tuesday, July 17. Mrs. Glenn Saltmarsh attend ed the rooster crowing contest in Rogue River. Petty Officer Third Class Al len Childers arrived home from Adak, Alaska, for a 30 day leave. He is staying with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Childers on Palmer Creek rd. On July 13 he reports at Treasure Island and from there will proceed to Guam for 18 months. Ronnie Green of Blue Lake recently spent a week end at the Clyde Stewart residence on Top o' the Hill. Mrs. Anna Scott recently re turned from Portland and vicini ty where she visited her sister, Mrs. Ernest Nickolsen. The Little Applegate Sewing club will meet on Thursday, June 28, at the home of Mrs. Harley Hp" instead of the George Red head residence. Many readers have inquired why we have not mentioned hay ing in our column. Being ignor ant of the mechanisms and tech nicalities of haying, we felt in adequate to comment, and pro ceeded to make a nuisance of ourselves on a local farm by at tempting to help in the field and in the hay mow. C Morton and their two children, Gail and Dave, returned last week from a combination business and plea sure trip to Canada. They drove 500 miles above the border into the Frazier river canyon, and they camped out. It rained most of the time, but they enjoyed their trip anyhow, Mrs. Morton commented. She also told how rugged and mountainous the country is, but they only saw one baby moose. An unusual sight was the old log cabins which had"dirt roofs that began to sprout after the rain. Mrs. Betty Edwards and her three sons, Jim, Joe and Jerry, Mrs. George Hooper and her two children, Pamela and Rodney, Mrs. Bill Watson and her two children, Billy Dean and Debbie, and Miss Connie Reynolds, all from Carthage, Mo., arrived in the Little Applegate last Friday. They are staying with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bethany and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Dunshee. Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Hooper, Mrs. Wat son, Miss Reynolds, Mrs. Beth any and Mrs. Dunshee are all sisters. A magazine entitled "Country Life" published in London, Eng land, was lent to us by Mrs. Otis Buck. One article was about wild Naked Nannies, which are not, as we presumed, "grandmothers in strapless evening gowns", but are autumn crocus which contain a poison that was used by Greek and Arabic physicians against the irritations of gout. Rural Reflections: Applegat ers are presently "fuedin', fuss in' and fightin' " with birds at tacking cherry trees and straw berry patches. One lady has trained her cat to stay up in their cherry tree to keep the birds away. Another lady shot one of the birds and strung it up in the tree as a warning sign to the next culprit who attempts to eat some of the luscious red morsels. Stoic faced scarecrows ominously adorn several gardens. In Do-lt-Yourself Fair; Starts Today More than 39 Medford firms are represented by exhibits and demonstrations in the three-day home show and do-it-yourself fair, which opened at 1 p.m. to day' on Blue Moon ranch, two miles north of Central Point. Most exhibits featuring home building materials, appliances, furnishings and do-it-yourself items are located in the 60 by 200 foot building on the ranch. Other displays, including house trailers, garden implements, power tools, garden furniture and lighting, and nursery items will be displayed in outside booths. . The show also features a mod el three-bedroom finish-it-your-self house. Stag Shows In addition to displays and demonstrations, the home show features six stage shows daily, refreshment stands and rides and games for children. Head liners for the show will be Heck Harper and his western band from Portland. The Medford Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Milk Producers league are in -charge of concessions. More than 100 prizes, ranging from restaurant dinners to ap pliances, will be presented at the show. Most firms having ex hibits will also give favors, sam ples, gifts for children and prizes. The show closes at 11 p.m. today. Doors will open at 1 p.m. and close at 1 p.m. Sunday. Sat urday's show will start at 10 a.m. and continue until 11 p.m. THIEF EYES FUTURE Chicago (U.P.)
