Definite Plant
While general discussions of
the need for a new church have
gone on for some time, it was
about six months ago that defi
nite plans began to shape up.
Congregation members talked
with the Rev. Meredith Groves,
Eugene, district superintendent
of the church, and with the Rev.
Ray Balcomb, minister of the
First Methodist church. They
then notified the bishop, as plans
were worked out, and he ar
ranged to have Mr. Taylor come
here to serve the church.
Officers of the' church, which
was formally organized in May,
include Ben Schmidt, chairman
of the committee; Walter Hig-
gins, vice chairman, and Mrs.
William Wilson, secretary-treas
urer.
A formal transfer service was
held at the First Methodist
church last Sunday.
. The church will have three
sources of initial financing, from
the national church body, from
the Oregon conference, and,
principally, through the congre

self-governing.

Mr. and Mrs. M. C Morton
and their two children, Gail and
Dave, returned last week from
a combination business and plea
sure trip to Canada. They drove
500 miles above the border into
the Frazier river canyon, and
they camped out. It rained most
of the time, but they enjoyed
their trip anyhow, Mrs. Morton
commented. She also told how
rugged and mountainous the
country is, but they only saw
one baby moose. An unusual
sight was the old log cabins
which had"dirt roofs that began
to sprout after the rain.
Mrs. Betty Edwards and her
three sons, Jim, Joe and Jerry,
Mrs. George Hooper and her two
children, Pamela and Rodney,
Mrs. Bill Watson and her two
children, Billy Dean and Debbie,
and Miss Connie Reynolds, all
from Carthage, Mo., arrived in
the Little Applegate last Friday.
They are staying with Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Bethany and Mr. and
Mrs. Lawrence Dunshee. Mrs.
Edwards, Mrs. Hooper, Mrs. Wat
son, Miss Reynolds, Mrs. Beth
any and Mrs. Dunshee are all
sisters.
A magazine entitled "Country
Life" published in London, Eng
land, was lent to us by Mrs. Otis
Buck. One article was about wild
Naked Nannies, which are not,
as we presumed, "grandmothers
in strapless evening gowns", but
are autumn crocus which contain
a poison that was used by Greek
and Arabic physicians against
the irritations of gout.
Rural Reflections: Applegat
ers are presently "fuedin', fuss
in' and fightin' " with birds at
tacking cherry trees and straw
berry patches. One lady has
trained her cat to stay up in
their cherry tree to keep the
birds away. Another lady shot
one of the birds and strung it up
in the tree as a warning sign to
the next culprit who attempts
to eat some of the luscious red
morsels. Stoic faced scarecrows
ominously adorn several gardens.
Still, the battle goes on.
