Morse Will Support Private Utilities in Building Low Dams Portland (U.R Sen. Wayne Morse, speaking to members of the newly merged AFL-CIO unions here yesterday, said he would support private utilities in the construction of low head dams where such dams are feas ible but "not where they seek to scuttle great dam sites and to teal them from the American people." The merger convention saw the AFL and CIO united in the Oregon State Labor Council with J. D. McDonald as the first president. He attacked recent criticism that has been directed at him for a bill on Hells Canyon he has introduced which would German Confesses To Electrocuting Wife Nuernberg, Germany U.R Paul Alt, a 56-year-old store keeper, confessed to electrocut ing his wife with a light card while he scrubbed her back in the bathtub, police reported Tuesday. His wife Pauline, 51, was found last week in the tub, her back badly burned. Alt told po lice a heavy basin of boiling water must have fallen on her. But under questioning he con fessed he electrocuted her in the zinc-lined tub with the raw end of a light cord. He told police he wanted to marry a younger girl and knew the plan would work because he already had killed his dog that way. have the dam constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation. The governor asked labor to help in determining new tax legislation for the state. "Certainly you men should be interested in seeing that a cli mate favorable to industrial de velopment is maintained in Ore gon," he said. He called on labor 'to take a long look at any legislation re garding taxes that might put Oregon manufacturing in an un favorable position. Tidwell, 50, was electrocuted yesterday afternoon while clean ing out an irrigation ditch on his ranch near Dufur, Ore. Tid- wel, one of his sons, and anoth er man were working on the ir rigation pipe cleaning out sand and gravel. The victim was kneeling on the ground when he lifted one of the pipes in the air, making contact with a high voltage wire overhead. Twins Will Meet After 87 Years - Durban, South Africa (U.RX Hugh Fraser Ross, 103-year-old Gordon Highlander, hoped today to be reunited with his twin brother Robbie whom he has not seen in 87 years. They left Scotland 87 years ago, Robbie to became a success ful brewer in Australia and Hugh to fight the Kaffir wars in South Africa. Brig. P. J. Parsons, an Aus tralian Salvation Army official visiting the Union of South Afri ca, met Ross and recalled that he had met his twin brother a year ago when he was only 102. He said he would check when he got back to Sydney to see if Robbie was still around. Lower America-Europe Plane Fares Discussed Cannes, France U.R) Execu tives of air lines flying southern and polar transatlantic routes tried again today to thrash out final details of a compromise proposal to cut fares between the European and American continents as much as 20 per cent. An announcement Thursday or Friday is expected to insti tute the fare cuts for 15-day ex cursions beginning in October and to drop year-around rates permanently starting in April, 1958. The worst disaster occurred on June 18, 1953, when a United States Air Force C124 crashed near Tokyo killing 129 persons. Another Air Force-C124 plane crash ranks second. That plane went down near Moses Lake, Wash., Dec. 20, 1952, killing 87 persons. Third was the crash of a charter airliner near Cardiff, Wales, March 12, 1950. There were UO soccer fans killed in that crash. Legion Chief Demands Vets' Pension Program Yankton, S.D. U.R) J. Ad dington Wagner, national com mander of the American Legion, demanded Tuesday night that Gen. Omar Bradley "get his foot off the oxygen tube leading to veterans' benefits." Wagner, in a speech here, said the United States can afford a veterans' pension program as long as it can afford to give bil lions to countries "we are not sure of."
