Bella An older boy may be good for her. o Jim Our daughter. 16, has met a young man who is seven years older, and has suddenly decided to drop all her boy friends because they are mere "babies." We would like to put a stop to this attitude, but my wife seems to agree with her. Our daughter is the youngest child in our family and has al ways been quite a bit spoiled and babyish herself, but she has become very impatient with the girls and boys of her own age group. It seems to me that she is running away from competition and seeking shelter with older people who may find her cute and patronize her. I am disturbed about the lat est turn, because I cannot ima gine a young man of 23 finding her interesting, unless he feels she Is naive enough to be easily misled. I know that when I was 23, I would not as much as have looked at a girl that young. I cannot seem to convince my wife that it is dangerous for our daughter to seek the company of much older young men. Bella I think I am being real istic. Our daughter is the kind of girl who will want to be married by the time she is 18, and she certainly cannot hope to make a good marriage among the boys of her own age group, who face, the prospect of military service and may not be able to earn a living for years to come. My husband does not under stand that a girl can grow up fast. Our daughter has been a little babyish up till recently, but she is now quite mature for her age and is becoming a wom an under our very eyes. She cer tainly does not seem out of place when in the company of the 23-year-old boy, but I think it is much healthier that she meet boys who will be eligible for marriage in the near future. The Council: It will not do to generalize. Jim is surely justi fied in being concerned, but the mother also has a great deal of reason on her side. What about the young man? Is he looking for an easy con quest, as the father suspects? Or is he, like the girl, retreating from his age group, preferring the admiration of a naive young girl, to the sharpness of an older girl? It often happens that a girl who is the youngest child is un prepared for the cruelties and crudities of competition in her own age group and, therefore, disposed to seek the benign com pany of adults. But the attrac tion between a girl of 16 and a boy of 23 can be quite whole some and enduring, given the right combination of qualities. Father and mother should stop generalizing broadly and get down to cases. Facts should be brought out in conversation. Both parents should abandon fixed attitudes and seek enlight enment. If this boy persists in dating the girl, it will become necessary to draw him out and to determine whether the rela tionship is a good one. We strongly advise against telling the girl that she is too young to go out with a 23-year-old. That would be a challenge calculated to antagonize her and move her to persist, because she would want to prove that she can manage older boys. If the relationship seems unde sirable, it should be attacked on specific, supportable grounds, but the age isue should not be the basis. (Copyright 1958. General Feature Corp.) It was heav enly when he was very young and it still is. Light as air and meltingly -tender; a supreme blend of delicate meringue and velvet lemon filling with moist coconut sprinkled around edge 4 eggs, separated Vi teaspoon cream of tartar IV cups sugar 10 saltine crackers, finely rolled Moist coconut 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon grated lemon rind !4 teaspoon salt 1 cup heavy cream, whipped Beat egg whites (being sure they are at room temperature) and cream of tartar until they stand in firm peaks. Gradually beat in one cup sugar; continue beating until very stiff and glos sy. Fold in saltine cracker crumbs. Spread mixture over bottom and sides of well-greased; one-inch pie plate. Spread bottom one fourth inch thick, sides one inch thick. Sprinkle edge with moist coconut. Bake in cool oven, 275 degrees, 6 0 to 7 5 minutes. Should be golden and crisp. Cool. Beat egg yolks slightly in top of double boiler. Stir in re maining one-half cup sugar, lem on juice, rind and salt. Cook un til thick; stir constantly (about eight to 10 minutes). When cool, fold in cream. Spoon into cooled meringue shell. Refrigerate 12 to 24 hours for best blending of flavors. Before serving garnish with whipped cream and grated orange ocel if you like. Six to eight servings. French Fried Onions And what does father order with his steak? French fried on ions and they're so easy to do at home that we should remember to have them more often. For each four servings: Slice three large mild peeled onions one fourth inch thick; separate into rings. Dip in one-half cup milk, then in flour. Heat one quart sal ad oil in three quart kettle to 380 degrees or until one-inch bread cube browns in 35 seconds. Meanwhile place onion rings in frying basket. Do not overcrowd. Fry until golden brown, about two minutes. Drain on absorbent paper. Keep in warm place until all onion rings have been fried. Season with salt. Serve immedi ately. Try Foil Wrapping ' Long White Potatoes California grown Long White potatoes are at their plentiful best. Thin skinned, shallow eyed, they require only scrubbing, rub bing generously with bacon fat, salad oil (or how about a tangy French dressing for a change) and wrapping in aluminum foil. For indoors baking, place foil wrapped potatoes in a 425 degree oven for about one hour or until potatoes aretender. Open foil, puncture with twin tined fork to allow steam to escape. Slit and serve with butter, seasoned sour cream or with a cheese sauce. For outdoors baking, prepare the same way as for "indoors," then place on hot coals but not the ones that are still flaming red). Turn occasionally and in about an hour they should be ready for folding back foil, slit ting and inserting slice of butter or offering with seasoned sour cream or cheese sauce. ' . For outdoor grilling, many like to pre-cook medium size po tatoes then proceed like this: Cut each pre-cooked potato in half lengthwise. Sprinkle with sea soned salt and place a thin piece of cheese between halves. Place stuffed potatoes in cooking foil. Heat on grill or at edge of coals. They should be ready by the time the hamburgers, hot dogs or kabobs are cooked. Fresh Chinook Salmon Gets Sauce Piquant We sing the praises of fresh Chinook salmon which many think makes superb eating with a barbecue sauce. Yessss, good, but for that rarely delightful salmon flavor, we like a little less spiciness, just a piquancy like this: For four individual size sal mon steaks, saute one clove fine ly chopped garlic and one small finely chopped onion in five ta blespoons butter until just soft Dust the fish with flour and add to the pan. Cook until they are nicely browned and just cooked through. Add two tablespoons lemon juice, three tablespoons Worcest ershire sauce and one-half cup tomato sauce to the pan and let it cook down for a minute. Re move salmon to hot platter; pour sauce over. Many think highly of garlicked dill pickle to go with this. For a real treat . . . ask your butcher to run a flank steak through his tender izer. When you are ready to cook i it dip in seasoned flour and pan fry. Fruit Department. Check with your fruit and vege table man for the best buy. Cher ries: Black Tartarians, Bings and Lamberts are coming to market in increasing quantities. Apri cots are putting in their first ap pearance. All citrus fruits con tinue in good supply. Vegetable buys are many. ! Crisp celery to add crunchiness to potato, fruit or molded salads. , A wonderful flavor addition to soups, casseroles, sauces and oth er cooking ... or just serve it stuffed with some of that "bargain-rated" cheese. Cabbage is still in the best buy bracket and what could be tastier than a hot or cold cabbage slaw. Corn is in creasing in quantity and quality right along. Squash: Summer, Italian and yellow are all avail able at good prices. The rule for cooking squash is "cook only un til tender never until mushy!" Carrots, onions, long white pota toes, broccoli, lettuce and spin ach are all good buys. Asparagus season will soon be over ... en joy it while you may. Medford Boy Named On Supreme Court .
