It tends to be inherited and it comes spells. It ap pears to be due to regur- citation of g a s t r ic con- tents into a gullet that has previous- ly been ir- ritated or made o v e-r s e n s i tive in some way. A person with heart burn shows me with his hand that the burning starts in the upper central area of the ab domen, and then runs up under his breast-bone, perhaps as far as his throat. From much study of patients with this trouble I am satisfied that it is rarely due to any or ganic disease, such as an ulcer or cancer or gallstones. It never turns into anything. Attacks come and go, often without any explanation that the patient can see. In other cases the person says he can always get heart burn by eating too much, or eat ing certain foods, or drinking certain drinks, or smoking too much, or smoking some partic ular brand of tobacco. Some say that they will get an attack of heartburn, lasting several days, whenever they "blow their top. The patients tell me that the best treatment is to take a little baking-soda and dissolve it in half a glass of water and then sip that. This alkaline water neutralizes the acid in the Bullet and washes much of it back into the stomach, where it cannot be felt. A tablet or two of some anti-acid drug does not work so Portland Mother Sewing Champion New York U.R) A Portland mother of five nosed out 33 final ists yesterday to win the S25.000 first prize in the first "Nation al Sew-Off" and became Amer ica s champion home seamstress. The Psychiatrist Who Refuse. To Sea His Patient's Spout Dozens of persons with a spouse undergoing psychoanal ysis have marveled when the analyst refused to see them, or Agronomists Are Impressed in Valley Two out-of-state agronomists, who spent Wednesday in Jack son county looking over local seed production, appeared well impressed with what they saw here, according to Earle Jossy, county agriculture agent. The visitors were Ralph Mer cer, extension agronomy special ist for Montana State college, and Frank Parsons, agronomist for the University of California. Jossy said Parsons told hint he planned to return to Califor nia and recommend that all growers in that state obtain their marion bluegrass seed from Otto Bohnert's farm. Bohnert, who has about 75 acres of marion bluegrass, operates a farm near Grant rd. in Central Point and, according to Jossy, is considered one of Oregon's leading seed growers. Parsons and Mercer, who were especially interested in produc tion of marion bluegrass, pen- lawn fescue and polycross bents, spent the morning at Bohnert's farm. During the afternoon they visited Wallace Rice, manager of the Josephine County Coopera tive. to discuss with them the pa tient's problem. Often, the spouse had very important things to say, things which he or she knew the patient was not confessing to the analyst. Many a time, also, the spouse very much needed expert guidance as to what he (or she) could do or should do each day to help the patient. In many cases the poor spouse did not know what to do during those terribly dif ficult days when the patient was irrational. It is hard to explain the per versity of a physician who will behave in this way. Perhaps he is treating a mildly psychotic husband, who gets by at the of fice well enough and is well respected in the community, but at home is a devil who even at tacks his wife and children. What is the poor wife going to do about this? How should she try to handle the situation? Is there anything she could do to get along better with her hus band? Is there any way in which she can lessen his hostility? Should she take the children and separate from him? Many such questions arise. I know a number of such cases in which the poor wife had to seek out and consult an old-fashioned type of psychi atrist that she might get the advice she so badly needed. The analyst would have nothing to do with her. The Boy Whose) Testicles Do Not Come Down In a recent article, Dr. Charles W. Charny and William Wolgin, of Philadelphia, noted that at the age of 14 or 20, some 2 per cent of boys still have one or both testicles up in the abdo men. Among adult males there are about two in 1000 with this defect. This means that, in many cases, with time the testicles do come down. Sometimes they come down when the boy is given male hormone. Every parent should be great ly concerned when he finds that his boy's testicle (or testicles) Strange As It Seems b"" Utah Man Bound Over To Circuit Court Scott Leonard Atkinson, 22, Provo, Utah, was bound over to the circuit court Wednesday after he appeared for prelimin ary hearing in district court on a charge of burglary not in a dwelling. Atkinson is charged with burglarizing the Grange Co-op erative Supply association estab lishment in Ashland on March 31. The complaint was made by Earl W. Weaver, manager of the establishment. Robert Boyer, Medford attor ney, is representing Atkinson. Seo Child Killed When Run Over by Truck Lebanon (U.R) A 15-months- old girl was killed at her home near Scio Wednesday when run over by an oil truck. The victim was Denise Norene Trollinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. How ard Trollinger. The driver was not held. He told officers he had not seen the child. m TO,' rT4 HUWftVI l!&B!TfNT4,l&WrlNitoFV. If both testicles are left in the abdomen they will not develop properly, and the boy will grow up sterile. He will not be able to have children. There is also a risk that a testicle left in the abdomen will some day become cancerous. What is very bad is that the boy who has no testicles in his sac will be jeered at by his swimming companions. Then he will become moody and solitary. He will become mildly psychotic, and will not go out with girls. This situation can be relieved by an operation in which the testicles will if pos sible be brought down. Some times the artery to the testicle is so short the operation cannot be successful. Usually, the operation is done in two stages. First, the testicle is brought down and anchored to the inside of the thigh. Later, when the cord has become ac customed to its new length, the testicle is moved Into the sae where it belongs.
