Yankees' Grim Bedazzles Chicago 5-1 Red Sox Knock lndians,Braves Beat Giants Friday. June 13. 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN By MILTON HICHMAN United Press Sports WriHr The Yankees were looking high and low for another pitcher as "pennant insurance" and it may be they've finally found him todav in Bob Grim, a right bander who some people were beginning to think was Just another of those one-year wonders. Relagated to the bullpen earlier this season when ne failed to impress anyone, the 28-vear-old Grim turned in by far his best performance of the campaign Thursday, defeating the White Sox, 3-1, and stretch ina the Yankees' lead in the American League to five games. Grim, a 20-game winner in 1954 and the American League 'rookie of the year" spent part of last year on the disabled list and wound up with an ordinary 7-5 record. Nine Whiffs Grim, who had not pitched a complete game victory since May 29, 1955 when he beat Bal timore, 1-0, struck out nine White Sox batters, walked only one and gave up four hits. Chi cago's only run came as a result of a fourth-inning homer by Dave Phillev. who was ejected from the game in the sixth be cause of a stormy third-strike protest. Mickey Mantle led a 10-hit at tack with his 22nd homer and a double, his homer off loser Jim Wilson in the fourth putting him one game ahead of Babe Ruth's record pace again. For Grim, it was his fourth victory without a defeat while Wilson suffered his third loss against eight victories. Red Sox Win Only two other games were played In the majors Thursday with the Red Sox outlasting the Indians, 10-9, and the Braves beating the Giants, 5-2. Jackie Jensen drove in four mm and Dick Gernert three in Boston's triumph, which was credited to Ike Delock. Powerful Gopher hitters pounded three Arizona hurlers for 14 hits Thursday night in producing the biggest rout of the 15-game NCAA collegiate series.
