June 15, I95S NCAA Track Tourney Tonight; Berkeley Ready for Records By HAL WOOD United Preee Sporle Wriier Eerkeley, Calif. 0J.PJ The nation'! greatest collegiate track and field stars try out their specialties at the metric dis tances today as the 35th annual NCAA championships got under way and before night falls seme 9.4 100-yard dash men are ffoine to find they are not even fast enough to qualify for the finals. The 100 meters measures out at 109 yards. 1 foot. 1 inch and the world record for that dis tance is 10.2. The competition is so keen In this event, that it is expected to hold the opening-day spotlight. Among the entrants are Lea- mon King. California; Mike Agostini. Fresno State; Dave Sime. Duke, and Bobby Mor row, Abilene Christian and all have been clocked in 9.3 or bet ter in the 100-yard dash. There are a total of 10 men on the list who have done 9.4 or better and only eight can qualify, out of the 31 entered, for the finals Saturday All told, there are 365 entries from 87 colleges who will be at tempting to nail down points for the alma mater in the two-day session. Defending champion is USC. which is gunning for its ninth consecutive title. But the Trojans are no more than even . wit!. Kansas, UCLA and Villan ova in the pre-meet predictions. In fact, if USC is to retain its crown, most of its points are going to have to be picked up with seconds, thirds, fourths, etc. Promising Race There is a lot of interest, too, in the 100 meter run. Ron De-' lany of Villanova and Jim Bailey of Oregon have broken the four-minute barrier for the mile, and Bob Seaman of UCLA has come close. The world mark for 1500 meters is 3:40.8 and the inter collegiate mark, set by Wes Santee of Kansas in 1954, is 3:42.8. So this timing is in jeopardy, too. There are 29 men entered. The shot put field looks one of the best in history, topped by Kansas' Bill Nieder, who has passed the 60-foot mark; and Ken Banium of Manhattan, who has bettered 59 feet. Some ot the prospects for the pole vault were dimmed when Don Bragg, the defending cham pion from Villanova, pulled a leg muscle the other day. He MEDF(MUWTRffiUNl Legion Game Cancelled; Myrtle Creek Disbands The Mediord-Central Point vs. Myrtle Creek junior American legion baseball game scheduled for the fair grounds at 8 p.m. tonight has been cancelled. The Myrtle Creek team has disbanded ac cording io their coach Bill George. Many of the possible play ers work in the Myrtle Creek mills and several have jobs in the woods making it impos sible for them to attend prac tices, George said. holds the intercollegiate record at 15 feet. 3?i inches. Too Much Running Most of the top sprinters will be running in both the 100 and 200 meter events, and with sev eral preliminaries slated, it is doubtful there will be any record. "I expect to run each race at least three times or six races in two days," said Sime. "And that Isn't conducive to records." There are six men who have cleared the bar at 8-8 or better in the high jump but none is expected to reach the seven foot barrier. Top man is Phil Reavis of Villanova, who has topped 6-10 this year. The finals will be held Sat urday, starting at 2 p.m. (PDT). 20th Annual Catfish Derby Will Be Held At Tou Velle Sunday Rules governing the 20th an nual National Catfish Derby will be the same as in previous years, according to Curt Butter field, president of the Medford 20-30 club. The Catfish Derby will be held Sunday, June 17, at Tou Velle State park on Table Rock rd. Sophomores at Medford High school elected Miss Myda Mc Cabe Derby queen. Members of queen's court will be Lelani Colts Defend Second Spot Here Sunday The Cheney Colts stand a chance of losing their tie for second place in the Rogue Valley league when they run up against Cave Junction at the fairgrounds here at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Colts now stand at two wins and one loss, tied with Ash land below league leading Glen dale and Grants Pass. Cave Junction has a reversed win-loss record, one win and two losses, tied with Butte Falls at third place. Starting pitcher from the local Studs' farm club will be Kay Kelley, with Duane Sides and Bill Caldwell standing by for relief duty. Others in the starting list- for the Colts will be Howard Morris, catcher; Harvey Tonn, first base; Maury Churchman, second base; Keith or Don Johnson, third base; Frank Rector or Don John son, shortstop; Bob Serak, left field; Ed Reinking, center field, and Larry Bigham or Vern Par ent, right field. In other Rogue Valley league games. Grants Pass is at Ashland, Glendale at Eagle Point, and Camp White at Butte Falls. Kunkel, ' Jacque Bates, Patty Hilton and Dana Ragsdale. Miss McCabe was honored by the 20-30 club at a banquet and dance at the Medford hotel ear lier this month. No Preregistration Catfish entered may be sub mitted to the judges between 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday at the judges stand in the park. Butterfield said no preregistra tion is necessary or entry fee will be required. The Derby is not expected to affect the sup ply of catfish in the Rogue River valley, he added. The Derby is open to every one and fish entered must be in good condition. The Derby, designed to resem ble an old-fashioned July 4 cele bration, will include sack races, bubble gum blowing and pie eating contests and other events with prizes awarded by local merchants. There will also be father-son three legged races. Prizes are planned for the fat test woman, the baldest man, the largest feet and the oldest car. Prizes Awarded Prizes will be awarded for the biggest catfish, largest number of catfish caught by any one contestant, youngest contestant entering one or more catfish and the oldest contestant enter ing one or more catfish and the oldest contestant entering one or more fish. The grand sweep stakes, trophy will be awarded on the basis of over-all ability. Scoring will be based on num ber of catfish caught,- average' length, average weight, general condition and appearance of cat fish and originality of costume of contestant. No admission will be charged In the Derby. Refreshments will be made available by the 20-30 club, sponsors of the Derby. Home Runs Fill PCL; Stars Win Again and Bevos Keep Falling By DON THACKREY United Press Sports Writer The Hollywood Stars rolled a lucky eleven last night against the San Diego Padres. The soaring Stars scored 11 runs to crush the Padres, 11-6, and to record their 11th straight Pacific Coast League victory. A few miles away, the Los Angeles Angels were scoring a dozen to give Portland's Beavers their eighth straight loss 12-5 and increase the Angel lead in the loop to four games. San Francisco gave the Angels an assist by taking their third in a row from second place Seattle 4-1. Vancouver bombard ed third place Sacramento 14-1. Healthy Lead Hollywood rapped out IS hits and took advantage of four Padre errors to roll to an 11-2 lead before the Pads put to gether four in the eighth, most ly on Earl Rapp's three-run homer. Earlier in the game, Ed Kazak had homered for San Diego and Ramon Mejias for the Stars. Los Angeles likewise got 16 hits, including homers by George Freese and Gene Mauch, and put together a pair of five- run innings. They had a fat enough lead that even Tom Saf- fell's grand slam home run in the eighth dii not endanger it A disputed three-run home run by Bob Dipietro in the first inning helped San Francisco to four tallies against Seattle and that was all they got or needed. R. G. Smith held the Rainiers to a lone run on Sonny Dixon's solo homer in the sixth, but needed help from the bullpen in the final inning. Eli Grba came on to put the side out. Howdie Judson, first of four Rainier pitchers, was the loser. Vancouver got a fine five-hit pitching job from Charlie Bea- man, who just returned to the active list after nursing a sore arm. In addition they ruined the earned run average of Cloyd Boyer by belting him for 10 tal lies, seven of them earned. Kal Segrist hit two Mountie homers and Bruce Edwards an other. Beamon had four singles in five trips to drive in four runs. . Fielders Make Poor Gamble; Spokane Win Br HAY ANDREWS United Press Sports Writer Half the Tri-City infield hud dled over a topped ball dribbling down the third base line last night and weighed a momentous decision. The score at the time was Spo kane 3, Tri-City 3 with the sacks loaded in the seventh. After due deliberation it was decided the ball would meander over into foul territory. It was a bad guess. The ball dropped dead just inside the line and a run scored. It was the one that gave Spokane a 4-3 decision in the only Northwest league game played. The dinky grounder off the bat of Ron Sampson also proved to be the blow that sent the Braves back into third place few percentage points behind idle Eugene. Texas Cowboys basketball team downed a local sporting club five, 67-50, Thurs day night. The Cowboys led all the way and were in front by 42-33 at the half. Rogue Valley Girls ' At Camp White Sunday The Rogue Valley girls' soft- ball team plays the Klamath Falls Basinnettes ' at the Camp White field Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m. The Rogue girls last week lost a 6 to 5 decision to the Rose- burg club, and the week before split a twinbill with Mobilgas. Cleveland (U.R) Henry C. Bullough, former Michigan State star and an offensive guard with the Green Bay Packers last fall, left for the armed services Thursday. He was the Packers fifth draft choice a year ago.
