Storms Fail To Chase Heal Wave; Records Tumble Br UNITED PRESS Storms raged around the edges of a vast blanket of muggy hot air today, but failed tc drive away a six-day heat wave. The most violent storm bat tered 300 miles of the Gulf of Mexico Coast and drove inland, where lt was reported dying out over Natchez, Miss., early today. The tugboat "May Dee" went down with 15 men aboard in the choppy waters off Gw'fport, Miss. Nine men were picked up late Wednesday and the tugboat "O. J. Cenae" rescued three more of the May Dee's crewmen today. Winds in Wisconsin Another squall line raced across northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan Wednesday night. It hit Rhinelander. Wis., with winds up to 100 miles an hour, uprooting trees and rip ping away the community tele vision tower. Hundreds of TV screens went blank. To the east, a savage storm hit Cincinnati, Ohio. The mar quee of the Sheraton-Gibson Hotel collapsed on a crowd of persons seeking shelter from the rain. Six persons were injured, some with broken hips, legs and shoulders. A lightning bolt killed Elmer H. Knot, 39, as he was golfing at Mt. Pleasant, Pa. A heat pros tration death was reported in Michigan and the drowning rate Jumped throughout the heat belt. Heat Records Broken Despite the storms, weather men said there was still plenty of fire in the heat wave baking the nation's eastern half. Once again, the heat broke records from the Mississippi river to the Atlantic Seaboard Wednesday. All-time scorchers included 95.4 at Chicago, the third record-breaker in a row, 97.1 at Boston. 95.4 at Detroit, 93 at Pittsburgh and 89 at New York City. The U.S. Weather Bureau predicted more 90 to 100-degree readings today. About 25 Try Out for FooflightersPlay ' About 25 rjersons showed urj About 25 persons showed up for the first tryout of roles for the Medford Footlighters play, "Late Love," at the fairgrounds theater last night. Final tryouts will be held to night starting at 8 p.m., accord ing to Mrs. Max Wimmer, presi dent. The play, a three-act comedy by Rosemary Casey has a cast of seven, all good roles, Robert Stedman, director, said. Casting will not be announced until all who wish to read have been heard this evening, he said. Tall actors are welcome, in case several of the tall girls who read last night, are given parts, he added. Sayings Bonds Sales Show Decrease Here United States series E and H Savings bonds sales in Jack son county during May totaled $63,606 compared to S81.331 dur ing May, 1955, according to Mor ris Leonard, county chairman. Sales for the year through May 31 in the county totaled $521,813. Leonard said, compar ed to S518.304 during the same period last year. State sales through May 31 totaled $18,482,487, compared to $20,676,243 for the same period last year.
