r EIGHT MEDFORD (OHEGOID MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, June 12, 1958 Renewed Medical Science Interest Spurs Popularity Washington U.R) New in terest in medical science, height ened by President Eisenhower's heart attack and by the Salk vaccine discovery, has spurred the popularity of a relatively unknown government museum here. Known simply as the Medical Museum, it has huddled quietly in the downtown section far away from the capital's show place area. Ignorance of its ex istence kept the building low on the rubbernecking list. But new interest in medical science almost doubled attend ance at the museum last year. It is now drawing sightseers away from some of the. better known tourist spots. The museum is the only one of its kind in this country in which a layman can. "just walk in and look around." Real life specimens of injury and disease are displayed without technical confusion in an effort to attract and educate the general public. Frequent Changes A museum official said the public's eye is now on medical progress. He said the "shocking Auto Industry Design Trends May Boost Plastics Use New York (U.R) Design trends in the auto industry may be a born plastics manufactur ers, a Chrysler Corp. executive enaineer said today. H.irry E. Chesebrough. chief of Chrysler product planning, spoke at the Society of Plastics Industry's annual conference. He predicted that continued effort to reduce car weight and (he trend toward increased use of transparency in auto styles might mean "a tremendous po tential market" for plastics. "Plastics are not yet com petitive with steel for body shells, but the auto industry is not wedded permanently to the use of any one material, he said. Cost Biggest Hurdle "Cost is the biggest hurdle facing the plastics industry," he said. "Yet the progress in solv ing this problem has already resulted in about 250 car com ponents being made wholly or in part of plastics." Chesebrough described the in dustry's goal as "a low cost, durable plastic that could be formed as readily and easily as steel." The trend toward life-time parts was cited as another op portunity for the plastics indus try. "We are looking for com ponents requiring less serving and replacement," the Chrysler executive said. "Plastics manufacturers have already given ui just such a component in the self-lubricating speedometer drive pinion made of ii ion." Federal Property Here to be Sold A tract of land at the corner of Delta Waters rd. and Old Cra ter Lake highway owned by the federal government will be sold at auction at 2 p.m. Friday at the Umpqua hotel in Roseburg. The 2.2-acre tract formerly used by the Air Force is one of 11 parcels in southern Oregon which will be sold by the Gen eral Services administration, i Stephen A. McDonald, vice- president of Joseph P. Day, Inc., of New York City, will be auc tioneer. He and Bernard P. Day, president of the firm, will be available to provide additional information on parcels Wednes day and Thursday. The Medford property has about a 1.300-foot frontage on Delta Waters rd.. and a 75-foot frontace on Old Crater Lake highway. Also being sold is an eight acre portion of the Roseburg Veteran's administration hospi tal, five tracts totaling about 120 acres adjacent to the Cottage Grove reservoir in Lane county and four parcels totalling 19 acres at the Dorena reservoir in Lane county. The sale is the first of four in the northwest. Other sales will be held in Portland, Walla Walla and Seattle. aspects of medicine such as leprosy and syphilis are losing their attraction. "People are more interested in the various stages of cancer, tu berculosis and heart disease," he said. Most of the exhibits are changed monthly or annually. However, there are some perma nent displays dating back to the 1800's. Two of the permanment ones are human development from embryo to birth and the medi cal aspects of the assassination of Lincoln. The largest and most com plete collection of microscopes in the United States takes up a wing of the museum. About 550 linstruments from the earliest to the latest accurately show development of this invaluable tool. Civil War Origin Generations of doctors and medical students have made use of material which the museum loans for study. The museum was founded by Dr. William Hammond, Civil War surgeon general. He real ized that war emergencies forc ed many doctors to treat wounds and diseases they had never seen. Attempting to study ways to decrease the toll of war, Ham mond established a collection of preserved material. He made it available to military doctors and later opened the doors to the public. The collection then began to grow. Orders went out to medi cal officers telling them to make complete records of injuries and diseases. Almost immediately, a flood of material was added. Even though Europe had its Pasteur and Lister at this time, a Frenchman was prompted to remark that the United States had done more in the field of anatomical - pathological preser vation in years than "Europe in century. The Army Medical museum expanded and originated the world-famous Armed Forces In stitute of Pathology. Now part of the Institute, "Army," has been dropped from its title.
