rOUHTEEH MEDFOP.D (OREGON) MAIL THIBTTNE Tueidsy, June 12, 1951 Paul Robeson Faces Charges of Contempt Washington (U.fi) The House Un-American Activities Committee voted unanimously today to cite Negro Singer Paul Robeson for contempt of Con gress. The action came momenta af ter Robeson refused to say whether he is a Communist. He shouted at committee members: "You are the nonpatriot and you are the un-Americans and you ought to be ashamed of yourse'ves." Hearing Adjourned Committee Chairman Francis E. Walter (D-Pa.) immediately banged his gavel and announced the hearing adjourned. "I think it should be," Robe son commented. "I've stood just about as much of this as I can," Walter said. "You should adjourn this for ever." Robeson snapped over his shoulder as he left the witness stand Walter huddled with other members and they voted unani mously to recommend that Robeson be cited for contempt. The Negro singer was the first witness as the committee re sumed hearings into charges that Communists have obtained American pas5ports to travel abroad to promote Soviet propa ganda. Robeson has made many trips to Russia and other places abroad. The last time he sought a passport, however, it was de nied after he refused to tell the State Department if he was a Red. Gag Attempt Charged To the committee today, he protested in a series of angry exchanges that the government is trying , to "gag me here and abroad." "It's none of your business what I think," he said. "Are you now a member of the Communist party?" asked Richard Arens, committee staff director. "What do you mean by Com munist party?" Robeson replied. Hermann, Noel Field Cleared of Treachery Vienna, Austria (U.R) The Communist "new look" at Sta lin-era purge cases has cleared two American brothers, Her mann and Noel Field, of treach ery against Czechoslovakia. Prague radio said Monday night that party First Secretary Antonin Novotny told the Czech party Congress that the Field brothers were wrongfully a c- cused of collaboration with the "traitor" Rudolf Slansky. Slansky was arrested, tried and executed in 1951 for "treacherous activities" against the state. The Fields were ac cused of helping him and were jailed. Novotny said the Communists still consider Slansky guilty, however. , As far as I know it is like the Republican and Democratic par ty .. . Would you like to come to the ballot box and look at my ballot when I vote?" When Walter directed him to answer, Robeson invoked the Fifth Amendment against giving testimony which might be self incriminating. The contempt citation was voted by Walter and by Reps. Bernard W. Kearney (R-N.Y.). Gordon H. Sherer (R-Ohio), and Clyde Doyle (D-CaJif.). The members did not challenge Robeson's right to refuse to an swer questions but based their action on his "abuse" of the committee. Recovery Period , For Eisenhower Noted Cambridge. Mass. (U.R) President Eisenhower may need two to three months to recover from his ileitis operation, ac cording to Harvard Medical School Professor David D. Rut stein. The expected six-week con valescence period is the abso lute minimum and "too optimis tic," Rutstein told a local tele vision audience Monday night. Rutstein, a doctor of preven tive medicine, said there was less than a 50-50 chance that the ileitis, a thickening of the intes tinal wall which causes an ob struction, would not return. "He's going to continue to have it for a long time because it's a chronic disease," he said. Rutstein said it was a "major achievement of modern medi cine that a man 65 years old, with a coronary, could have such surgery and come out of it without untoward results as the President has." ROK Moving Troops To Offset Commies Seoul, Korea (U.R) The Republic of Korea's top military man said today the South Kor ean Army is moving more troops to the front lines to offset grow ing Communist strength. Gen. Lee Kyung Keuh, chair man of the ROK chiefs of staff, told United Press correspond ent Jack Boyer the United Na tions should raise the armed strength in South Korea to the 1953 cease fire level. "We still have room under the armistice agreement to bring in additional fire power," he said. "What we need most now is more iron than men." Molofov Successor To Visit in Athens Athens, Greece (J,R) Sov iet Foreign Minister Dmitri Shepilov w411 visit Athens short ly during a diplomatic tour of the Middle East, it was announc ed today. The announcement indicated Shepilov's forthcoming trip to Cairo has developed into a ma jor shakedown cruise for the new diplomat who succeeded V. M. Molotov as foreign minister a week ago.
