June 7. 1958 Bedford High School Seniors To Receive Diplomas, Awards More than 45 honors and scholarships will be presented to Medford High school seniors at the 63rd annual commencement exercises at Hedrick Junior High school auditorium starting at 8 p m. today. Scholarships include those awarded by private industry, civic organizations and universi ties and colleges, and other swards will be from various so cieties, and organizations. A total of 270 seniors will re ceive diplomas tonight. Scholarship Award Among those receiving schol arships will be John Van Dyke, who will receive a national merit scholarship. The scholar ship is awarded alter a series of nation-wide examinations and a final review by a national board. Van Dyke also is listed for university and college hon ors at entrance at the Califor nia Institute of Technology. Other scholarships and their sponsors include Michael Haw kins. Rogue River chapter: Sharon Whitlock, Parent Teach ers association; Al Boardman, Idaho Power Said Wilhin Rights in Hells Canyon Job Washington (U.R) A Fed eral Power Commission attor ney said today the Idaho Power Co., of Boise, Ida., acted legally in starting construction in Hells Canyon before obtaining authori ty from Oregon state. Leonard Eesley told the com mission the company complied with the public interest and pro visions of its EPC license in going ahead. Eesley and attorneys A. C. Inman and R. P. Parry, for Ida ho Power, asked for dismissal of a petition to halt the com pany's application to issue $20, 000,000 worth of short-term promissory notes. The dismissal was sought by the National Hells Canyon Asso ciation. It contended that it could not oe determined that the proposal securities were "for some lawful object" and com patible with public interest. Two Reasons Mrs. Evelyn Cooper, its at torney, based this contention on two reasons: That . the commis sion's order licensing the Hells Canyon project is under court review; and that Idaho Power violated Oregon law by starting construction before getting a water use permit from the state. Eesley said the association's contentions were "unfounded." He said Idaho Power was re quired under FPC license to start construction within one year and complete the project in 36 months. The company, he said, "tried to comply with Ore gon laws and had filed all nec essary applications, but that the state failed to act. Rotary International; Rodney Olson, US. Ruth Gillispie, Santa Cruz Teen-Agers Irate Over Rock and Roll Dance Ban Santa Cruz, Calif (U.R) Officials of this resort town, called on the carpet by out raged teen-agers, hastily ex plained today they didn't mean to ban rock and roll music, only the "obscene" dancing It sometimes inspires. "There's no ban on an or chestra coming in and having a rock and roll dance," said City Manager Robert Klein. "We encourage dancing by juvenile groups all summer long," he said. High school students show ed up at the district attorney's office Wednesday to protest what they thought was a ban against rock and roll music as such. They said they were afraid they were to be penal ized for the actions of a few "out of town" couples at Sat urday's dance. Meanwhile, it was learned that the scheduled July 24 appearance of Fats Dominoe and his Eight Rockers has been cancelled. Manager Ray Judah of Civic Auditorium claimed Dominoe's music at tracts "a certain type of a crowd" from outlying areas "that would not be compatible with this particular commun- ALL OVER BOARD Atlanta (U.R) Trolley dri ver Gerald F.
