School Holds First Prom A South Seas motif was theme for the first annual prom of Hed rick High school Saturday, May 28. The event was held in the cafetorium and was for ninth f rade students. Miss Shirley Ru therford was crowned prom queen during intermission. The decorations represented a seashore with a desert island in the background, and palm trees. Guests were seated at tables un der thatched roofed verandas which formed a South Sea is land cafe. Fish nets and bamboo mats completed the veranda dec orations. The dance floor was centered with an oasis of palm trees and a pool of goldfish. The prom committee, headed by Miss Linda Horton. took charge of the decorating, prepar ation of refreshments and plan ning the program. Queen Shirley s court was made up of Miss Jackie Creager, Miaa Susan Graff, Miss Delia Robinson and Miss Vicky Palmar. Music was provided by Rich ard Schuchard and his orchestra. Prices Home Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Price re turned to their home at 1006 Sunset avenue Thursday after pending two weeks in Los Angeles. Beverly Hills and other southern California cities. They were guests of Mrs. Price's bro ther and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Jorgensen and iamily at El Monte, while away. Couple to Attend Grange Convention Eagle Point Mr. and Mrs. Grant Hubbell. alternate dele gates of Eagle Point Grange, are attending a state Grange conven tion at Pendleton. The sessions started today and will continue through June 8. This is the 83rd Grange convention in the state. The Eagle Point members will meet at their Grange hall Tues day, June 5 at 8 p.m. Garden Club Session Set for Thursday "Succulent Plants" will be topic for a meeting of 'Medford Garden club Thursday. June 7 at 2 p.m., in the Pythian hall. Fifth and Grape streets. Installa tion and initation will be con ducted. ' Two in Portland For Graduation; Visit Hospitals Miss Sandra Montgomery and Miss Jen Lyn Callahan are spending the week end in Port land. Miss Montgomery is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Montgomery, 644 Palm street, and Miss Callahan's parents are Mr. and Mrs. William Callahan, 607 South Holly street. They left for the north Fri day by plane and today are at tending graduation ceremonies at the University of Portland. Miss Callahan's sister, Miss Shar on Callahan, is a member of the class. She is a student nurse at St. Vincent's hospital, and will receive her nursing degree in the fall. Both Miss Montgomery and Miss Jeri Lyn Callahan will be seniors at St. Mary's High school next fall. The former will serve as secretary of the student body, and the latter as treasurer. Both are also interested in nursing careers, and are on the staff of Sacred Heart hospital here as nurses' aides. While in Portland this week end they are visiting hospitals, and after returning home, will work at the hospital during the summer months. La Planes Attend OSC Graduation Mr. and Mr.s William La Plane, 810 Humphrey street, are iri Cor vallis this week 'end to attend baccalaureate and commence ment exercises at Orecon State college.- Their son,- Jack! Pratt, will receive his bachelor's de gree in electrical engineering. Mrs. Claire Jloyt and Mrs. Richard DeMers of Yreka. Miss Pike, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Howard Pike, 1015 Narregan street, plans on a nursing career and has been accepted by Good Samaritan . hospital, Portland, for training. Miss Pike has been one of the co-editors of the Medford Hi Times, student newspaper, this year, and is a member of the Pep club as well as other student organizations. The final meeting of the year was held by Alpha Rho chap ter Beta Sigma Phi Monday evening at the home of Mrs. G. J. Adlfinger, 401 North Keene way. . The Rev. George R. V. Bol ster of St. Marks Episcopal church gave a talk on the topic "Make an Art of Living." He told the group that to make life a balanced, well-rounded exper ience, an individual should be sure that the basic needs of life are met. These basic needs are physical needs such as food, clothing and warmth, mental stimuli and knowledge, emotion al needs the need to be loved and respected and the spiritual needs through worship. He also said that every one should show appreciation to others and should cultivate and respond to the personalities of close associates. Mrs. Raymond Morton also discussed with the group some thoughts on "Make an Art of Living." She said one should be responsive to the simple things of life, should meet 'problems with decision decide and then forget, and should make the present moment the most im portant, not events of the past or future. As another portion of the cul tural program, Mrs. Maynard Paup showed how she -makes shadow boxes from refinished antique picture frames. Mrs. William Tycer demonstrated the use of modeling clay in sculp turing and explained briefly how ceramics are made. During the business meeting Mrs. Bob Norris reported that Miss. June Pike, Medford Senior high school senior has been awarded the nursing scholar ship for which funds were rais ed during the annual card party. Committee chairmen for the coming year will be Mrs. James Chapman and Mrs. Marcus Mc Kenzie, program; Mrs. James Sullivan, social; Mrs,. Henry Schroeder, ways and means; Mrs. Richard Henselman. court esy and calling; Mrs. William Werner, service; Mrs. Donald Lue, historian and Mrs. Richard Riggs, publicity. Mrs. Bob Norris was given an award for having the best cultural program of the year This award was given on the basi3 of presentation, the approp riateness of material used and the effort put forth to make the program both educational and entertaining. Miss Carol Clark To Be Graduated; Parents to Attend Mr. and Mrs. Willard B. Clark of Topsides orchard, are leaving today by United Air lines for Boston, Miss., to attend com mencement exercises of the New England School of Theology. Their daughter, Miss Carol Clark, will be graduated from the school and will receive a bachelor of arts degree in theol ogy. She has majored in educa tion. Mr. and Mrs. Clark will re main in the east for a week and plan to visit historical points. They will return June 12. Miss Clark will spend the summer on the coast of Maine and return to the valley early next fall. 1 Students Receive History Awards From DAR Chapter Winners at McLoughlin Jun ior high school of the American history award given by Crater ake chapter. Daughters of Amer ican Revolution, were an nounced last week by Mrs. G. R. Carter. Receiving the awards were Bob Quinney, Dick Ragsdale and Bill Hobbs. In announcing the winners at the school, Mrs. Carter also gave credit to their teachers. The in structors are Mrs. Gertrude Holmes, Larry Brunette and George Slonigcr. Members of the executive board of Crater Lake chapter were entertained Tuesday by Mrs. Carter, at a luncheon at her home on East Jackson street. Ways and means of raising money to be used toward a pa triotic program were discussed club their Social Meeting Held by Women Monday Evening Scottish Rite . Womens' held a social meeting in club rooms in the Masonic tem ple May 27. Bridge and canasta were played, with Mrs. L. L. Stone holding high score in ca nasta and Mrs. Ralph Lue high score for bridge. The men joined the women for coffee and dessert after their meeting. Mrs. Ernest Hoffman chairman, was assisted by Mrs. Marjory McVay and Mrs. L. C. Scott. They served poi with sweet rolls and coffee. The tables were decorated with red candles and red roses in oriental vases and with Chi nese figurines representing sev eral Chinese gods. Mrs. Hoffman wore a dress of Oriental raw silk and she spoke of these gods and their separate missions, some good, some not so good, such as the war gods. She and her husband were resi dents of Guam for many years. Plans are being made for a reunion dinner for all Scottish Rite men at 6:30 p.m. June 9. Meeting Announced For Past Presidents Past president of the Ladies' auxiliary. Fraternal Order of Eagles, will meet at the home of Mrs. Tom Edsall, 215 Washing ton street, Friday. June 8. Des sert will be served at 1:30 o'clock, with a business meeting to follow. Medford Students Win State Awards Robert Mitcheltree, a Medford senior high school student, was announced second place winner last week of the American Le gion auxiliary's annual . state poppy poster contest. He won first. place in the poster contest at Medford Senior high school. His art instructor there is War ren Wolf, head of the art depart ment. . . Also a winner in the state con test is Jack Howard of Hedrick Junior high school. He also won first place in his art class at Hedrick school for the poster which was later entered in the statewide contest. His art in structor is Miss Catherine Fon kin. Mrs. Herb Gifford is president of the Medford American Le gion auxiliary. Mrs. Minnie Bry ant is poppy, poster chairman and will give the winners their checks. State poppy poster chair man is Mrs. Mildred McDowell of Redmond. . Family Here Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lemire and children, Renee, Brian, Curtis and Rochelle, of Chico, Calif., arrived Wednesday to visit until today with relatives and friends. They are houseguests of Mrs. Lemire's parents. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Hoppe, 53 North Peach street. They also are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Lewell Dupray, 921 South Holly street. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Darland, 922 Park street, and Mr .and Mrs. Ed Lemire, Ross lane. .. Troop Plans Horse Show Ladies' Mounted troop is plan- ning a horse show Saturday, July 14. It will be held at the Jackson County Sheriff s Posse grounds on Sage road, at 7:30 p.m. Such events as english pleas ure, parade horse, western pleas ure are palanned. and a jumping class will be the highlight of the show. The games which will be judged by the best time for each event are to be Texas barrel, pole bending and scurry - race. There will also be events for children 12 years old or younger. They are to be a seat and hands class and musical chairs. A smorgasbord dinner will be served by troop members from 2 until . 6 o'clock in the after noon. Tenatative plans are also be ing made for horse races in .the afternoon before the horse show. The races will be conducted along with the eliminations for the Show. A ticket bought for the eliminations and races Satur day afternoon will be good for the horse show Saturday even ing, it is stated. Co-chairmen for the show are Mrs. Iris Dodge and Mrs. Thayer Tarvin. co-chairmen for the smorgasbord are Miss Beverley Nelson and Mrs. Gerald von Ting. Miss Montana Emerson is in charge of publicity. Visitors Attend Lodge Meeting; Officers Named Visitors at the last meeting of Medford IOOF lodge, included George Naderman, of Chemetka lodge. 'Salem, past grand patri arch, and John Robinson, newly appointed grand herald of the grand lodge, and his son. present noble grand of the Central Point lodge. The meeting was held Tuesday evening. Jesse Thomasson was elected noble grand for the coming term, Duane Curtis was elected vice grand and Larry Horton' was elected secretary to fill the un expired term of Tom-iSanks. Mr. Banks has resigned smce he willJ go to Benton, Ark., where busi ness has called him. Noble Grand Robinson an nounced a joint Odd Fellow Rebekah event to be held In Central Point June 16 commem orating the 50th anniversary of the Central Point lodge. Parents of the group also will meet at the same time. Several events are planned by the youth for this month and for later in the summer. "An over night ride will be held June 9 and 1 0 when they will go to Mil itary bridge for a" spaghetti and salad dinner. Games and danc ing will be conducted after the dinner. The Rangers also have planned a swimming party for this month, the date to be an nounced. Later a trip to Oregon Caves is to be made, the ride to take three days.
