TWO MEDrOHD (OHZOON) MAIL TRIBUNE Ex-Congresswoman Talks About Women and Presidency Bt ELIZABETH TOOMEY United Press Correspondent New York W.R) It ii compe tition, not diitrust, that is keep ing a woman out of the office of president of the United States now, former Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas said to day. Mrs. Douglas, regarded as the "glamour girl" of Congress a decade ago. is now a heartening ly haopy example of a success ful loser. Her blue-eyed good looks, her forceful speeches and her straight forward manner made her a familiar figure on Capitol Hill from 1944 to 1950. Then she decided to run for tiie Senate and was defeated by her Repub lican opponent Richard Nixon. She shrugged off that experi ence, sitting in a huge over stuffed chair in the 11-room Park avenue apartment where she now lives with her actor husband. Melvyn, her daughter, Mary Helen, and frequent guests vbjm she hospitably invites for long visits. "I think there is nothing more unattractive than a person going around explaining why he was defeated," the former actress said. "I could have gone on talk ing about the 1950 campaign in speeches for years. People got very interested in the campaign Issues. But I didn't." Interest Undiminished Her Interest in politics re mained undiminished, however. She believes it is a field which presents definite advantages and drawbacks for women, yet one which will succumb to more and more feminine control. "In the not too distant future we will have a woman Presi dent," Mrs. Douglas said. "The resistance to a woman as vice president or president now is not a result of male suspicion that women lack the powers to handle the job. It is just that these are the two top offices of Golden Wedding To Be Observed The golden wedding anniver sary of Mr. and MrsGeorge Gil man will be celebrated at an op en house on Sunday, June 3. The event will be at their home, 3466 Table Rock road, and friends are invited to call between two and four o'clock. The couple's six sons and daughters will all be here for the celebration. The 56-yearold former con gresswoman, who now is hop ing to resume a concert singing career she abandoned years ago, says she believes that men have far less objection to working with women, either in politics or business, than many women retlize. "I have found that the best way to work competitively with men is just to forgst they are men, listen to what they have to say, and agree or disagree. Different Thinking "It is not a question of trying to be like men. A women has something to contribute because she does think and react differ ently." The most difficult part of pol itics for a woman, Mrs. Douglas said, is the problem of taking care of her family and helping her children to understand the public abuse she can expect to receive, especially in a cam paign. "A woman can take criticism as well as a man, but when there are children there is no one home with them during the campaign to explain why a cam paign descends to the level it sometimes does. The children can form violent hates which are wrong and dangerous." Would she like to run for of fice again? Mrs. Douglas just smile-J. "No," she said, and added cryptically, "but then I never thought about it in the first place. One thing just led to another." Two Men Guests In Prentice Home W. C. Chamber of Commerce Reports Six All-Women Branches Listed By PATRICIA WIGGINS United Press Correspondent . Washington (U.R) Increas ing numbers of women do Cham ber of Commerce work. The U. S. Chamber of Com merce here found from a national study that six all-women branch es are going strong in Kansas City, Mo., Atlanta, Ga., Little Rock, Ark., Nebraska City, Neb., Sapulpa, O a k 1 a, Williamsport, Pa., and Puyallup, Wash. There is a growing trend to ward establishment of women's divisions of regular male cham bers. A midwest conference of women's divisions started by Iowa several years ago has caught on. A western conference was held last April in California and a southern one is scheduled for Florida in November. Some chambers like Leesburg, Fla., for one have women pres idents. More have women on their board of directors, and even more have ' women committe chiefs and women committee members. More Business Woman Dwight Havens, U. S. cham ber service department manager, was reluctant to give figures on the extent of the petticoat in vasion because responses to a questionnaire were varied. For example, based on 517 Program to Have Romantic Theme Metropolitan Opera star Lu cine Amara joins with Donald Voorhees and the orchestra in a 1 salute to June, the month of love and weddings, on the Telephone Hour of Monday, June 4. .Two great love songs will be pre sented on the broadcast, which originates in Carnegie Hall at 8 p.m., on KMED. For the concluding number on the program, Miss Amara will sing a love song from Verdi's "II Travatore," the expressive "Peaceful Was the Night." She will also, sing the reflective "Sweet Night" by the French composer Alfred Bachelet, and a novelty written in the style of Handel, "Old Mother Hubbard" by Hely-Hutchinson. Donald Voorhees and the Bell Telephone orchestra will open the broadcast with the immortal "You Are Love" from Jerome Kcra's "Showboat." They will continue the romantic theme with the "Grand Adagio" from Glazounoff s ballet, "Raymonda" Vid with the gay and impas sioned "Gypsy Airs" by Pablo Sarasate. - The Telephone Hour's other guest artists of the month will be Lily Pons on June 11, violinist Michael Rabin on June 18, and Eileen Farrell oh June 25. 29.98 21.98 . fitted full reg. 11.98 chambers replying out of 1,117 queried, women account for an average of three per cent of total chamber of commerce mem bership. Havens said that of 1,050 chambers answering another question, 804' said they took in women as members. He esti mated about 100 still have by laws which make no provision for women members. In the past 10 years more wo men have gone into business and have become as interested as men in improving business and community prospects, he said. Havens said there is a tend toward coordinated women's divisions. But be said many wo men prefer to remain in the reg ular chambers. Men appear to take kindly to the invasion or at least have ac cepted it. Havens said the U. S. Chamber hasn't received any violent objections for several years. Instead, he said, since 1950, the Chamber has received more than 4,800 requests for a pam phlet put out by the national office, and called "Women in Chamber of Commerce Work."
