Ex-Congresswoman Talks
About Women and Presidency
Bt ELIZABETH TOOMEY
United Press Correspondent
New York W.R) It ii compe
tition, not diitrust, that is keep
ing a woman out of the office
of president of the United States
now, former Congresswoman
Helen Gahagan Douglas said to
day. Mrs. Douglas, regarded as the
"glamour girl" of Congress a
decade ago. is now a heartening
ly haopy example of a success
ful loser.
Her blue-eyed good looks, her
forceful speeches and her
straight forward manner made
her a familiar figure on Capitol
Hill from 1944 to 1950. Then she
decided to run for tiie Senate
and was defeated by her Repub
lican opponent Richard Nixon.
She shrugged off that experi
ence, sitting in a huge over
stuffed chair in the 11-room
Park avenue apartment where
she now lives with her actor
husband. Melvyn, her daughter,
Mary Helen, and frequent guests
vbjm she hospitably invites for
long visits.
"I think there is nothing more
unattractive than a person going
around explaining why he was
defeated," the former actress
said. "I could have gone on talk
ing about the 1950 campaign in
speeches for years. People got
very interested in the campaign
Issues. But I didn't."
Interest Undiminished
Her Interest in politics re
mained undiminished, however.
She believes it is a field which
presents definite advantages and
drawbacks for women, yet one
which will succumb to more and
more feminine control.
"In the not too distant future
we will have a woman Presi
dent," Mrs. Douglas said. "The
resistance to a woman as vice
president or president now is
not a result of male suspicion
that women lack the powers to
handle the job. It is just that
these are the two top offices of

Headquarters
the nation, and there are so
many men who would like them
that they naturally want to elim
inate the female half of the com
petition as long as they can."
The 56-yearold former con
gresswoman, who now is hop
ing to resume a concert singing
career she abandoned years ago,
says she believes that men have
far less objection to working
with women, either in politics or
business, than many women
retlize.
"I have found that the best
way to work competitively with
men is just to forgst they are
men, listen to what they have to
say, and agree or disagree.
Different Thinking
"It is not a question of trying
to be like men. A women has
something to contribute because
she does think and react differ
ently." The most difficult part of pol
itics for a woman, Mrs. Douglas
said, is the problem of taking
care of her family and helping
her children to understand the
public abuse she can expect to
receive, especially in a cam
paign. "A woman can take criticism
as well as a man, but when
there are children there is no
one home with them during the
campaign to explain why a cam
paign descends to the level it
sometimes does. The children
can form violent hates which
are wrong and dangerous."
Would she like to run for of
fice again? Mrs. Douglas just
smile-J. "No," she said, and
added cryptically, "but then I
never thought about it in the
first place. One thing just led
to another."

City, Mo., Atlanta, Ga., Little
Rock, Ark., Nebraska City, Neb.,
Sapulpa, O a k 1 a, Williamsport,
Pa., and Puyallup, Wash.
There is a growing trend to
ward establishment of women's
divisions of regular male cham

women's divisions started by
Iowa several years ago has
caught on. A western conference
was held last April in California
and a southern one is scheduled
for Florida in November.
Some chambers like Leesburg,
Fla., for one have women pres

their board of directors, and even
more have ' women committe
chiefs and women committee
members.

the Chamber has received more
