Chapman, founder and editor publisher of the Oregon Voter for 40 ye?rs who died early yes terday in a local hospital. Chapman suffered a stroke Monday. His body was to lie in state at Finley's mortuary from noon today until noon Friday. Salem Auditor Cleared On Charges of Assault Salem (U.R) Frank E. Kirby Jr., Salem auditor, was cleared by Marion county grand jury Tuesday of charges of assault with a dangerous weapon on his 13-year-old stepdaughter, Har riet Johnson. The 44-year-old Kirby, who had maintained his innocence since his arrest April 25, was charged with beating the girl with a hammer handle. Police Solve Mystery Of Body in Vehicle Fargo, N.D. (U.R) Fargo po lice solved the mystery of the body in the station wagon. A young woman told police she had seen the station wagon with out-state license plates in an alley and that there was a body in the back. Police detective Charles Hov den later located the station wagon, which he identified through the license number. (U.R) Prisoners in the Hand county jau nere were given a brief spell of free dom, and the sheriff's son was responsible. Glenn Gard, son of sheriff Kenneth Gard, and a companion found an odd object in the sher iff's car. They flung it against the jaU wall. It was a tear gas bomb. Elmo Smith warned a Memorial day crowd at Depoe Bay's an nual Fleet of Flowers yesterday that taking America's heritage of liberty and justice for grant ed "is the first step in losing this heritage." "The right -to vote,-, to take part in the processes of govern ment, to speak and worship as we wish these things did not just happen, nor did they come easily to us," Gov. Smith said. The strength of a nation does not lie in its treasury balance, or in its natural resources, or in the size of its armed forces, the governor pointed out. "The strength of a nation lies in the character and fiber of its people, in their willingness to sacrifice personal gain and per sonal comfort for their country's welfare, in their willingness to work together for the common good and, in the last extremity, in their willingness to lay down their lives in defense of the principles for which their coun try stands," Gov. Smith said. Methodist Conference Will Study Campsite Portland U.R) The Ore gon Methodist conference yes terday voted to study the feasi bility of joint ownership of Wal lowa Lake campsite with the Idaho and Pacific Northwest con ferences. The Idaho conference now owns and operates the 140-acre campsite. Last week the Idaho conference voted to offer joint ownership to the Oregon and Pacific Northwest conferences. Washington and the Idaho pan handle make up the Pacific Northwest conference. Wednesday's vote by the Ore gon conference means that the proposed joint ownership plan will get extensive investigation for one year. At the 1957 confer ence a report on the Idaho offer will be given. The Oregon Conference is holding its four-day meeting at First Methodist church in Portland. Detroit U.R) Edgar A. Guest, long-time poet laureate of the Detroit Free Press, was in "fair" condition today at New Grace Northwestern hospital.
