Several Firsl Aid Classes Completed Lerpy Williams, chairman of first aid for Jackson County Chapter of the American Red Cross, has announced the com pletion of several first aid classes. Girl Scout leaders completing first aid training were Joe Al lison, Ann Classick, Homer Classic, Cline Hawkins, Gladys Stephens, Altha LeRoy and Eileen Lewis of Rogue River. Neva Hayes, Frankie Howard, Betty James, Betty Keene, Ad die Simmonds, Georgia Smith and Joyce Williams of Phoenix, also completed the course. Twenty-f our employees of Hunter and Best Lumber com pany of Ruch completed the standard class. They are Robert Allen, Raymond C. Ayers, Glenn Best, Mario Bortolazzo, Robert i L. Bowles, Rex Davis, Lloyd Ehrk, Charley Gibson, Allen Buches, Charles Guches, Billie Joe Hunter, Charles Kimbal, Daniel Malakie, Wayne Meeds, George Mitchell, James S. Riche tdn, Howard Russell, Lawrence Snopl, John R. States, Sam Stelle, Donald Turnbaugh, Glen Travis, Delbert Whiteley, and Dick Arnold. Mrs. Bette E. Miller, Medford, was instructor for Girl Scout leaders. Twenty-five first aid classes have been completed in the county under the direction of the Red Cross since January with over 500 certificates issued. Western Airlines Sets Reno Flights Reno, Nev. (U.P.) Western Airlines announced Saturday it will offer four flights daily, two eastbound and two westbound, when it inaugurates regularly scheduled to Reno June 11. Morning and evening flights will be scheduled linking Reno with San Francisco, Oakland, Salt Lake City and Denver. The airline plans to use four-engined presurized DC6B planes. At present, east-west air serv ice to and from Reno is provided by only one company, United Air Lines. Nearly 500 patients have been carried by the organization's planes, and of that number, many owe their lives to the speed with which they were transported to hospitals. Cincinnati (U.R) The Na tional Council of the Boy Scouts of America Saturday named 12 explorer scouts to make a 17-day "conservation caravan" through Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. The caravan, led by Ted S. Pettit, national scout director of conservation, will begin at Spokane, Wash., June 20 and end at Anchorage. Alaska. The scouts chosen for the trip represent each of the 12 boy scout regions. They include William F. Cummins, Oakridge, Ore. Cincinnati, O. (U.R) Kenneth K. Bechtel, newly elected presi dent of the National Boy Scout Council, predicted Friday that "most of us will live to see 10 million Boy Scouts in this country." The council reported record breaking membership gains at its two-day meeting here. Bechtel, who joined the Boy Scouts in Oakland, Calif., 35 years ago, made the prediction following a report by Dr. Arthur A. Beal of New end of 1955. , Schuck said troop membership totaled 1,339,796, which included 1,142,396 Boy Scouts and 257, 000 Explorers. He said there were 53,604 troops, 36,000 Cub packs, and by the end of 1955, 440,244 young men enrolled in the Explorer program. Training Youth Schuck said the gains pre sented a "challenging responsi bility" for the training of Ameri can youth in character and good citizenship. "What is happening in. the lives of the boys in America to day," said Schuck, "may well determine the course of events of the entire world in the fu ture." A new four-year enrollment program was announced which will have as its theme "Onward for God and my country." Bechtel said the new slogan "expressed my idea in a nut shell" about scouting. "Scouting makes no sense without it," he added. , He regarded the increased membership more as a challenge than an accomplishment. Bechtel succeeds John M. Schiff of Oyster Bay, N.Y., as president of the NBSC. Schiff was elected honorary vice presi dent. Norton Clapp of Seattle, Wash., was elected vice presi- Stan Culy Awarded Baxter Scholarship Salem Stan Culy, Medford, freshman in philosophy at Wil lamette university, has -been awarded the. Bruce R. Baxter Memorial scholarship. The schol arship is sponsored by the Sa lem Study club. The scholarship is awarded to students who have attended Wil lamette at least one year, and who are in need of financial as sistance to continue education. Chilean Foreign Office Reports Kidnap Attempt Los Angeles (U.R) The Chil ean consul in Los Angeles said Saturday she had not received any instructions .to protect the wife of an associate of missing Prof. Jesus de Galindez against further kidnap attempts. Mrs. Graciela de Polanco said she never had heard of the wo man, identified as the wife of Chilean newspaperman Alfonso Naranjo. The foreign office at Santiago said unidentified per sons tried to kidnap her here May 13. She escaped unharmed, according to the brief announcement. York City, treasurer. The council, meanwhile, an nounced the Scouts will carry out another nation-wide- get-out-the-vote campaign. In the course of the non-partisan campaign. the. Scouts will make pre-elec tion day calls on 35 million homes reminding qualified vot ers to go to the polls, j Several Dealers Expected at Show Dealers from most sections of western Oregon will be in Med ford next Friday and Saturday for the Chin Up club's third annual antique show and sale in the Pioneer room of the Jackson hotel from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Seven dealers, from as far away as Portland will display antiques during the two days. All items will be for sale. The club will, use its share of the receipts from the show to dicap aid pool. Equipment which now includes crutches, wheel chairs, a hospital bed and a walker, are loaned to persons having a permament or tempor ary, disability and who would be inconvenienced by purchas ing their own equipment. Baby Feared Kidnaped Found in Stolen Car Detroit (U.R) ' A sick baby feared kidnaped was found asleep Friday night in the car in which it was stolen. Police said the auto thief ap parently abandoned the vehicle in a hurry when he discovered the baby in the front seat. Police said the -baby's mother, Mrs. Ruth- Cupari, of Mt. Clem ens, had parked the car outside her husband's snack shop in De troit and was gone only a few minutes. The 16-month old baby had been running a temperature and the parents were going to take it to a hospital When the mother returned outside, the car and baby were gone. Police issued an area-wide alert and found the car aban doned in an alley three hours later. Third Carload of Ore Shipped From Austin Rend, Nev. (U.R) Apex Uran ium Company said Friday it has shipped its third carload of high grade ore from its mining prop erty at Austin, Nev., and expects to send out about three cars a week starting next week. FOR REPRINTS 5c ft Sunday, May 27, 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THKEK Steps Taken to Preserve Beauty of Columbia Gorge Salem (U.R) Steps to pre serve the scenic beauty of the Columbia river gorge against possible inroads from' timber cutting on private lands had the added support Saturday of the federal forest service, Gov. Elmo Smith said. Smith informed the Columbia River Gorge commission that he was heartened at word from fed eral officials that the U. S. for est service has agreed to make possible exchanges of land in the gorge which would assure preservation of this timber. The federal action is the culmination of more. than a year's efforts by the governor's office. In a letter to the governor. As sistant Secretary of Agriculture E. L. Peterson reported he has instructed the forest service to proceed to reach a determination with the Columbia Gorge com mission as to what remaining parcels of land in the gorge the commission would believe it to be the responsibility of the gov ernment to acquire. "It is my understanding there are five tracts having an ap proximate value of $154,000 from which existing timber would be removed if they are not acquired either by the state or the U. S. forest service," Peterson wrote. He said the forest service was authorized to negotiate and ef fectuate exchanges of timber if that need be done to acquire the parcels within the gorge. Peterson added that it is on ly because of the urgency of the matter and the wide public inter est in . the , preservation of a unique area that his department was willing to participate to the extent indicated. Basic responsi bility,' he said, resides within the state of Oregon.
