Steps Taken to Preserve
Beauty of Columbia Gorge
Salem (U.R) Steps to pre
serve the scenic beauty of the
Columbia river gorge against
possible inroads from' timber
cutting on private lands had the
added support Saturday of the
federal forest service, Gov. Elmo
Smith said.
Smith informed the Columbia
River Gorge commission that he
was heartened at word from fed
eral officials that the U. S. for
est service has agreed to make
possible exchanges of land in
the gorge which would assure
preservation of this timber. The
federal action is the culmination
of more. than a year's efforts by
the governor's office.
In a letter to the governor. As
sistant Secretary of Agriculture
E. L. Peterson reported he has
instructed the forest service to
proceed to reach a determination
with the Columbia Gorge com
mission as to what remaining
parcels of land in the gorge the
commission would believe it to
be the responsibility of the gov
ernment to acquire.
"It is my understanding there
are five tracts having an ap
proximate value of $154,000 from
which existing timber would be
removed if they are not acquired
either by the state or the U. S.
forest service," Peterson wrote.
He said the forest service was
authorized to negotiate and ef
fectuate exchanges of timber if
that need be done to acquire the
parcels within the gorge.
Peterson added that it is on
ly because of the urgency of the
matter and the wide public inter
est in . the , preservation of a
unique area that his department
was willing to participate to the
extent indicated. Basic responsi
bility,' he said, resides within the
state of Oregon.
