Medford tribune Second Section MEDFORD, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, 1956 Utilization of Gas Reduces Attention Needed in Kitchen To make their kitchens more useful, many families are mak ing gas do tricks. Automatic de vices reduce attention needed for kitchen work, and new fin ishes on appliances increase the attention they get from house wives. Among the important automa tic devices are controls for the burners on top of the stove where 80 per cent of the cook ing is done. These will keep the heat where you want it. They won't let the pan get too hot or too cool. You can set them for temperatures from 150 degrees up to 450. You can pre vent food from scorching, burn ing, or boiling over. Sio-. Becomes Automatic Cooking experts point out that with such controls, any pan you put on the stove becomes an au tomatic appliance. Thermometers also help gas become even more useful. One kind of range has a built-in ther mometer. It measures the heat in the roast and registers it on a dial on top of the range. Another kind carries this idea a step farther. The thermometer is plunged into the roast. The other end is plugged into the range. When the roast is done, the oven is turned -off even if the housewife has left her home. It can also be hooked up to a clock to turn the oven off at a certain time rather than at a certain temperature. Finishes for the gas applian ces are taking on more color although white enamel still is popular. Sometimes two . or three . colors are combined on one appliance. Some of the pop ular colors are pink, yellow, blue, green, stainless steel and satin chrome. tyr Tricks With Gas Other tricks with gas in the kitchen include griddles and burners recessed into counter tops and the use of built-in ov ens. Some top burners also fold back against the wall to give more work surface. Important use of gas appliances also ex tends to laundries, many of which are now being combined with kitchens. Built-in appliances and steel cabinets permit virtually any kitchen design including this distinctive island styling. Here, surface cooking units are set in special rounded door cabinets which con tain storage space for pots and pans. Such island arrangements are becoming increasingly popular for today's largest steel kitchens where it is desirable to conserve steps between centers.
