It is now al most but not quite too late." The "preacher" of this medical sermon" was Dr. Henry Jack son Jr. of Tryon, N.C. the med ical profession is likely to listen be cause it was published in the August New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Jackson said too many doctors now rely al together on science, and that is a shame. "Science of course is neces sary," he said. "It has its justi fied place and each year it be comes more important to the proper practice of medicine. Art Disappearing "But neither tests nor science can fully replace the art of medi cine and that is fast disappear ing, though occasionally one sees shy, freightened bits peering cautiously out at the man who is ill through the maze of mil limols and hydrogen ions and tests for histoplasmosis, which mean precisely nothing." The "art of medicine" is con sidered by medical men to be a combination of intuition, of keen awareness of the twists and turns in human emotions, of the great value of what the layman calls "common sense," combined with a genuine love for humanity and, as Dr. Jackson put it, "a heart of gold." This "art" has just about been replaced by "sci ence." Dr. Jackson's example of how they contrast follows: a boy of 13 obviously was very small for his age. The local doctor full of "the latest 'scientific' ideas" fil led him with expensive medi- ng Art Medicine cines, no one of which could possibly make him grow. One of them could, quite easily, do considerable harm." Nothing happened. "Science, apparently, has failed." Wonder Drugs Thrown Out Then came to visit a physican friend of the family with 35 years of experience and "excel lent training" and "a love of humanity in general and the small boy in particular." This doctor "threw all the wonder drugs down the hopper" and set out to study the family. He found out that the boy's two older brothers, both big, strapping youths, hadn't started really to grow until they were 15 or so. Next he found out that the little boy's bone age was ten years, "if even that," although he had lived 13 years. They were called to a farm one bitter winter night. The farm wife was in bed, ill. The country doctor looked her over and pre scribed. Then, visiting in the kitchen with her husband, he heard that a horse was sick, too. Instantly, the doctor said: "Let me look at him." So he treated the horse as well as the woman. This, said Dr. Jackson, was "the art of medicine and its versatility." Tuesday.
