1 MDFORDv&TRIBUKE TORNADO DIAMOND NINE 6 A-1 CHAMP Medford high school's Black Tornado rules at the District 6 A-1 baseball titlist. The Tornado tucked away the mantle yesterday afternoon with a 4 to 2 decision over the Klam ath Falls Pelicans and added lus ter and prestige to its Southern Oregon Conference and district laurels by trimming the Pels also in the second game of the doublebill 7 to 4. Ed Reinking's inside the park homer, a drive into right center field, was the big blow as the Tornado pushed over three coun- Bend Named As Host To B Tourney Corvallis (U.R) Bend will host the state high school Class B basketball tournament next year. The site was chosen here Friday at the meeting of the Oregon School Activities Asso ciation board of control here. The board voted to hold the annual B school tournament March 7-9 at the central Oregon city. Prineville, Pendleton and Baker also had bid for the 1957 tourney. The Class A-1 tournament will again be held in Eugene at the University of Oregon's McAr- thur court from March 12-16. The Class A-2 meet also remains at its location of last year in Salem with the Intermediate size schools holding their meet March 11-13. There again will be an eight team field. Grid Play Set In other action yesterday the controlling body set the 1957 football playoff schedule for the last three week ends in Novem ber. The Class A-1 champion ship game date was fixed as No vember 30 at Portland's Mult nomah stadium. No specific final dates were affixed in the other two classes. Also meeting approval from the board yesterday was a move to shift Spray and Mitchell, Class B schools in eastern Ore gon, to district 7B for all sports. A proposal to tighten eligi bility rules was also made Fri day at the OSAA session. The plan would require athletes to be passing in four "solid" sub jects rather than the present three. A committee headed by Ro land Parks, Ashland high school principal, made the recommen dation. The committee will sub mit an amendment on the pro posal at the OSAA delegate assembly next November. Henry Putney walked and Larry Perkins singled ahead of Reinking. This big inning, coupled with Putney's three hit hurling made the difference. He whiffed eight batters and issued three bases on balls while Earl Tichenor of Klamath was striking our four and walking one. The Tornado sewed up, the second fracas with four runs in the final canto. A walk to Reink king, Dennis King's sacrifice, doubles by Steve Shorey and Reinking and singles by Jim Put ney and Gordon Owsley manu factured the markers. Owsley got four hits in four times up and Jim Putney and Shorey each doubled and singled in the game. Ernie Tyler, throwing a nine hitter for Medford, struck out eight and walked two. (U.R) George Risley and Al Heist slam med ninth-inning homers Satur day to climax a shutout pitching duel and give Sacramento a 2 to 0 victory over San Diego in a Pa cific Coast league game here.. The homers by Risley and Heist, number three this year for each, followed a duel be tween Southpaw Gene Barden of Sacramento and Padre Right hander Pete Mesa. Bearden scattered four hits for his second victory against as many defeats. Mesa allowed six hits in absorbing his fifth defeat against two triumphs. (U.R) Robin Moore of Stanford bettered the NCAA 50-yard freestyle record Friday while competing in a qualifying heat of the Pacific Coast Conference's Southern Di vision swimming championships. Moore set an unofficial new record of 22 seconds flat, knock ing a tenth of a second off the old record. In the finals, he was clocked at22.1, tieing the cur rent standard set by Northwest ern's Henry Kozlowski in Co lumbia, Ohio in 1943. The ex-prep all-stater turned out for baseball this spring but dropped the sport to concentrate on his studies. Seven Star Northern Crown Visible Near By FAY VAN SCHOIACK Would you like to see a crown of celestial jewels, which, ac cording to Greek mythology, was worn by a princess of long ago? Ariadne's Crown is a small constellation, occupying approxi mately the same amount of space as the bowl of the Big Dipper, but, of course, the form is dif ferent. To find this group, be gin with the last star in the handle of the Big Dipper.
