He won the high jump at 5 feet lO's and was second in the broad jump to collect the bulk of the points for the Chieftains who finished eighth in team scoring. Pilot Rock won the meet with 63V& points, Wallowa was Crater Comets Gain 6 A-2 Baseball Toga Central Point Crater high school won the District 6 A-2 baseball championship here yes terday, defeating Douglas 4 to 3. An overthrow on first base allowed in the winning run for the Comets with two men out in the 11th inning. The victory sent the Comets Into the state quarter-finals. They play Junction City there next Wednesday at 2 p.m. With one out in the fourth extra panel here yesterday, Bill Reaves singled and Harold Lef ler sacrificed. Fred Herrmann drilled the ball to Larry Bis senette at shortstop whose throw to first, was bad. Reaves romp ed home for the wining tally. Bob Gilman, Douglas pitcher, was stingy with the hits except in the fourth inning. Teams will each play two or three innings. Contention will be on a rather informal basis. Mayor Earl Mil ler of Medford will be on hand to throw out the first ball. Regular league activity will get underway on Monday. Two games will be contested at the same time on the Medford senior high football field. They are scheduled for 6:15 p.m. The twi light plan - replaces a previous night slate and was finally agreed upon to avoid the expense of lights. Walt's Lithia Motors of Ash- land will tackle 20-30 club in one TALENT, MERRILL COLLIDE IN 5B TUSSLE HERE MONDAY Talent high will try to muster hitting power against strong pitching Monday when it faces Merrill in the battle for the Dis trict 5B baseball toga. The two clubs clash at 2 p.m. at the fairgrounds ball park just south of Medford. Pitching is reported to be the strong point of the Merrill Huskies, B champions of Klam ath county. On the other hand, Talent mound strength is not quite equal to that of past sea sons. John Hunnicutt may be the opening Husky twirler with Perry Lanejr on hand for cap able relief if needed. Eighth In Nine Years It was Medford's eighth Ore gon prep track triumph in nine years and the seventh in eight tries for a Bob Newland-coached aggregation. Tornado victories have come 14 times in 17 years of competition. And the A-l preps throughout the state would like to shatter the Tornado's perennial suprem acy could see no immediate end in sight to Medford's reign. Phil Paquin was victor in the pole vault for Grants Pass and Paul Bernick of Gresham won the javelin with 184-11. Crater's Comets, however, placed men in five events to pro duce 17 points. Christian was the only entry for his school. Jim Korth of Phoenix was fourth in the javelin, the only Pirate to gather points. Places for the Comets were Craig Cochran, second in the high jump at 5-9, George Juve land third in the 220-yard dash, Bob Mason fifth in the broad jump with 20-4V4, and Jack Lilly sixth in the discus and Don Goyette, tied for fifth in the pole vault. Redmond's Panthers rolled up 67 37 points. for an impressive team triumph but the one man performance of Dave Edstrom of Sherwood and Cliff Thomson of Douglas stole the limelight in the meet. Edstrom Takes Hurdles Edstrom won the high hurd les in a blazing :14.6, the low hurdles in :20 and the high jump with 5 feet IOV2. Thomson won the mile in 4:37.4 and also took Benson 6, Oswego 6. Cougars Trip Oregon 8-6; Huskies Win By UNITED PRESS Washington State's Cougars held a solid 2V-game lead in the Northern Division baseball race Saturday and the Cougars beat back their nearest challenger to do it. WSC posted an 8-6 victory over Oregon at Pullman Friday on the strength of a 5-run first inning and a 3-run splurge in the fourth. Four singles and three walks got the five runs in the initial frame. Doubles by Ron Roisy, Jack Hardman's triple and sin gles by Joe Trembly, Bill Rich and a walk produced the three in the fourth. Fire Put Out Oregon rallied for three in the ninth but John Freeman came in for the Cougars to put out the fire. Washington got a 4-hit pitch ing job from Ed Lajala to top Oregon State 1-0 at Seattle. The Huskies won it with an un earned run in the first and Lajala held on for the victory. The Husky marker came on two errors and t two walks. A walk with the sacks loaded sent home Ray Cresap with the game's lone run. WSC now is 10-2 with Oregon 6-3. Miller also took the Chester Wood handicap with a 97 and the Class I doubles with a 44 on 25 pair. In the handicap he gain ed the Chester Wood trophy which is awarded on 50 targets. He and Bernard Henry Medford had 49 each and Miller won the extra shoot 25 to 23. The tourney resumes at 9 a.m. toay with the 16-yard Mail Trib une trophy event. Following this event will be the $300 Medford handicap and 25 pairs of doubles. John Williner, Eugene won the newspaper trophy last year with 100 straight.
