Brussels Romance Squelched by Palace London (U.R) Another royal romance died today before it could really get started. The Brussels newspaper Het Volk reported the engagement of pretty Princess Alexandra, 19-year-old daughter of the Duchess of Kent, and Belgium's bespectacled King Baudoin. The London Daily Mirror said it was officially informed by Kensington palace, the Duchess London home, there was no truth to the report. It was the second time in two days court circles have taken the almost unprecedented step of issuing a blitz denial of such rumors. On Wednesday Queen Eliza beth II authorized a denial of any romance between Princess Margaret and German Prince Christian of Hanover. Two Children Drown In Sewer Excavation Savannah, Ga, (U.R) Allen Stafford and Sammy Donaldson, both 8, drowned Thursday night in a water-filled sewer excava tion which had been left unpro tected, police reported. A housewife said she warned the boys away from the 10-foot hole, but later noticed the boys' bicycles were still parked near the hole. Firemen drained the hole and found the boys' bodies partially stuck in mud. Detroit (U.R) Most people would see little to compare be tween spinach and cigarettes. But there is a very definite parallel, according to Dr. Evarts A. Graham of Washington Uni versity of St. Louis. "If there was as much evi dence that spinach caused can cer of the stomach as there is between lung cancer and smok ing," Graham said Thursday, "the United States Public Health Service would plaster the country with warning placards." ( Delivers Lecture Graham unveiled his somber facts on smoking here when he FISH ON POWER POLE Salem, N.H. (U.R) Power company worker Walter Tan guay found a fish on top of a power pole Thursday. The fish was in the beak of a hawk which became entangled in the power lines and died while carrying its catch home for dinner. Nation's Weather Extremes Moderate By UNITED PRESS Weather extremes leveled off today, breaking record setting heat waves in the West and cold snaps in the East. In Southern California, light rains cracked the sizzling heat which sent temperatures as high as 105 earlier this week. Freak winds accompanied the storm Thursday, ripping down trees and power lines in Los Angeles. It was still on the chilly side on the East coast, but tempera tures rose five to 10 degrees above levels which set records Thursday, in New York City, Rochester, N.Y., and other cities. There was rain in the Middle Atlantic coast states, with Salis bury, Md., getting a 1.03 inch dousing. Temperatures were also on the cool side in the Middle Mis sissippi valley and parts of the Great Lakes area. Chicago reg istered a nippy 44 degrees early today. Mc Clure Memorial League lecture before the Henry Ford Hospital Medical Society. He said 14 recent studies in this and other nations showed "incontrovertible" evidence of the relationship between- heavy smoking and lung cancer. "There is not the slightest doubt of the' causal relation ship," Graham said. He was quick to blast Dr. W. C. Hueper of the Public Health Service who holds that the in creased incidence of lung can cer may be blamed on air pollu tion. PHS Keeps Silent "Heuper goes around. shooting his mouth off about something he doesn't know anything about and the rest of the Public Health Service keeps silent," Graham said, i He also blasted the tobacco industry for trying to offset lag ging sales by conducting cam paigns to start people smoking at an earlier age. "The evidence against cigar ette smoke is stronger than the proof that vaccination protects against smallpox," Graham said. "Only screwballs doubt that." Boy Tells Teacher Of Father's Death Austin, Tex. (U.R) It was "show and tell" time Thursday in the third grade classroom at Austin's Maplewood school, and a quiet eignt-year-om Doy neia up his hand when the teacher asked pupils to relate personal happenings. "My daddy was killed yester day in an airplane crash," said the boy, Jimmy Rose. "My mother told me to be brave and not to cry. She said that is what Daddy would have wanted me to do. But mother cried a lot," Jimmie went on. The teacher, Mrs. Myra Mont gomery, called Berstrom Air ; Force base and found the story was true. Jimmy's father, test pilot W. S.
