May 17, 1956 Negroes Observe Desegregation; 'Black Monday' Meeting Slated By UNITED PRESS Negroes across the nation ob served the second anniversary of the historic Supreme Court school desegregation ruling to day with solemn fasting and prayer. White persons were expected to join Negroes in the churches of many cities with prayers of Thanksgiving. The governors and mayors of some northern cities and states issued procla mations giving the observances official backing, But in the Deep South, where most states are yet to start com plying with the Supreme Court ruling to end segregation in pub lic schools, observances of an other kind were planned. Members of the pro-segrega tion White Citizens councils said thev would hold "Black Mon day" meetings, commemorating the Monday in 1954 when Chief Justice Earl Warren handed down the school ruling. - The Alabama Citizens coun cil scheduled a "Black Monday" meeting at Birmingham, with Circuit Judge Tom Brady, cred ited with originating the term, billed as main speaker. Georg ia's Gov. Marvin Griffin was to address a council meeting at New Orleans, although it was not announced as an anniver sary observance. The nationwide day of fasting and prayer is sponsored by the National Baptist convention. Its president. Dr. Joseph H.
