Rex Hartwig, Known in Tennis World As 'Rekker', Was Coorful Amateur Rex Noel Hartwig is known to his tennis intimates as "Rek ker," which is short for "the wrecker," and no one is more entitled to the name in tennis over the past three years. For the past two years the first name leading players have looked for in any major tourna ment draw, after their own, is Hartwig's. Unfortunately, for some of the top men, he not only has eliminated them, but has beaten them so badly that their confidence has been temporarily broken. 'Moil Exciting Player' Hartwig has, been described as "the most exciting player in world tennis" and "the leading doubles player of 1955" by Al rick H. Man Jr., former Ameri can Davis Cup captain and one of the world's best known ten nis officials. Rex is an only child of wheat and sheep farmer Stan Hartwig, of'Culcairn, about 250 miles south of Sydney. His mother and father played tennis and he divided his time between Aus tralian rules football, which helped to develop his muscular and agile frame, and tennis. When he first began playing major" tournaments he was so wild and erratic that be became known as a "basher," and it took several years for him to get his tremendous stroking power under sufficient control to win a nod from Australian officials. Paired with Lew Hoad Harry Hopman, Austrialian Davis Cup captain, paired Hart wig with Lew Hoad in the 1955 doubles and the combination was an immediate success. It was here that Hartwig caught the eye of Jack Kramer, looking for material for a 1956 tour of the United States. It took consider able persuasion for Rex to give up his amateur standing but Kramer's faith in him has been proven in the last several months. Southern Oregon sports fans will see Hartwig in action at the Hedrick junior high school gym in Medford on Monday, May 28, when Kramer brings his tour here. Hartwig will go against Fancho Segura in a singles set I and will pair with Tony Trabert against Pancho Gonzales and Se gura in the doubles. Gonzales and Trabert will meet in the feature singles match. Tickets are on sale at Lam port's Sporting Goods store, 226 East Main st. But the morale of the Tornado was reported high today. The Medford baseballers were eager to get at the Cavemen. Grants Pass and Medford meet at 3:30 p.m. in the Climate citv. The clubs are slated to meet here on Wednesday. A victory tomorrow will as sure GP of a tie for the title. If the Cavemen nab both games this week they'll claim the cham pionship. Tyler To Hurl Triumph in both tangles is a virtual must for the Tornado if it is to keep its title hopes. Should the Medfordites drop the Tuesday skirmish, they would have to take their three remain ing conference hassles and then win a playoff for the toga. Coach John Kovenz said this morning that he planned to call on Ernie Tyler as pitcher for to morrow's fray. The Tornado goes to Klamath Falls for a doublebill next Satur day. The match was completed Sat urday. First 18 holes had been contested a week previously. Butler sank a 30-foot sidehill putt on the 33rd green to claim the championship. He had a 79 card for a full 18 holes on Sat urday. Carrying a six handicap to Little's 14, Butler had to give his opponent 16 strokes, eight per 18 holes. Butler was 1 up on Little for the opening 18 greens of the tussle. Bobo Olson Plans To Be Red Hot Santa Monica, Calif. U.R) Carl (Bobo) Olson declared to day, "I'm coming out red hot Friday night." The baldish ex-champ from San Francisco said he would shadow-box six or seven rounds in the dressing room at Wrigley Field, Los Angeles, before his I attempt to recapture the middle weight crown from 35-year-old Sugar Ray Robinson. "I'll come out red hot and go right after him this time with out being careless, of course," said Hawaiian-born Bobo, who lost the title to Robinson on a second-round knockout at Chi cago, Dec. 9. It will be the most thorough warm-up of his career said the 27-year-old challenger, who gen erally has been a slow starter. Texas A-M Ban May Be Lifted Bryan, Tex. U.R) Texas A&M stood a good chance today of having the National Collegi ate Athletic association ban against it lifted, after NCAA President ClarenCe P. Houston said he plans to make such a recommendation. Houston said he would sug gest at the NCAA's summer meeting that the ban against A&M would be lifted if "we find it to be true that A&M has its recruiting house in order." The Aggies were put on two- year's probation by the South west conference for recruiting violations. The' NCAA later put the Aggies on probation on the same charge. Porky Oliver, the broad beamed birdie blaster from Bos ton, hoped today that his victory in the $10,000 Greenbrier Open golf tournament had ended the slump that kept him from win ning a major meet for two years. Oliver took the layout here apart like a small boy disman tling his toys, winding up the 72-hole competition with a 14 under par total of 266. Runner up Sammy Snead put on a display of temper that was a beaut when he had a bad fin ish that gave him a 269 total. Even though he had a five under par 67, he was in such a rage that instead of signing his score card he marked over it with a pencil and went storming into the club house. Monday, May 14, 195B MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SIVSN Little Chicago Boy's Body Found in River Chicago (U.R) Police said today that little Leo Rausch Jr., their will o' the wisp quarry for 13 days, met death seeking ad venture in sluggish Chicago riv er. The body of the 8-year-old boy was found yesterday, bob bing in the turgid waters of the river's North branch about four miles from his home. Final conclusions about his fate awaited a corner's inquest and a scientific examination of the body. But police, along with Leo's grieving parents, felt they already knew the truth. For almost two weeks, police had believed the precocious boy was playing hide and seek with them. He ran away from school on April 30 and scores of Chi cagoans reported they had seen him later. But most of the people who thought they saw Leo must have been wrong, police said. Debris of Tornadoes Covers Six States; At Least 10 Killed Flood Control Group To Meet on Tuesday Fay Bristol will be principal speaker at the meeting of the Rogue Basin Flood Control and Water Resources association Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Rogue River grange hall. Bristol has interviewed many people in the Rogue basin con cerning flood control and recent ly returned from Washington, D.C., where he contacted agencies and senators in behalf of flood control. He will intro duce a proposed plan of action to the group. , A representative from the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce is expected to attend. The public is invited to the meeting, according to H. F. Nor wood, public relations chairman of the association. About 2,500,000 persons live in mobile homes. This trailer population is enough to make the third largest city. By UNITED PRESS The debris of a tornado bar rage covered parts of a six-state area today. At least 10 persons were re ported dead in the wake of the week end weather fury and scores more were injured. Prop erty damage ran into the mil lions of dollars. Weather officials said a cold front racing across the Midwest apparently was chasing out the threat of more twisters today and dropping temperatures. But the East baked in a muggy heat wave. The tornado onslaught began on Saturday night, killing six persons on the outskirts of Cleveland, O., three in Flint, Mich., and one at Ithaca, Mich., The Red Cross reported a total of 17 deaths, including two more in Michigan, but authorities said these could not be confirmed. Tornadoes in Pennsylvania More tornadoes hit Pennsyl vania causing heavy damage, and near Omaha, Neb., Saturday night and early Sunday. The twisters returned Sunday slash ing through farm areas in Kan sas and Missouri. Nothing Seriously Wrong With Clare Booth Luce London (U.R) Clare Boothe Luce, U. S. ambassador to Italy who left Rome last week for a medical checkup in New York, is only having "the medical at tention she should have had some months ago but couldn't find time," her publisher hus band said Sunday night. Henry R. Luce, publisher of Time, Life and Fortune,, said there was "nothing seriously jvrong" with the ambassador and that she will "quite defin itely" return to her post in Italy. The suburban west aide of Cleveland felt the twister' most lethal fury. Three persona were killed when a tavern collapsed, two more were electrocutd by live wires from fallen utility poles, and one was crushed to death in his car by a falling tree. In Michigan, tornadoes touched down at least 12 times and concentrated their fury on Flint, where a twister killed 116 persons three years ago. A flood threat added to Flint's troubles for a while. But the rain swollen river was falling to day, as was the bloated Grand river at Grand Rapids, Mich. Damages High The injured list at Flint alone amounted to 136. Damage was conservatively estimated at $1. 250,000 and authorities said it might rise to $2,000,000. Twisters also danced around Detroit's suburbs. There was more heavy dam age in western Pennsylvania, where the twisters hit hardest at the steel city of Duquesne. Al though there were no deaths and only one serious injury, damage was estimated at $1,000, 000 in the state.
