Of Reaublicans for "Washington fU.R) Politi cal breaks in Washington and Kentucky lifted Republican hopes today for winning their uphill struggle to regain control of the Senate. From Washington came- the announcement that Republican Gov. Atthur B. Langlie had yielded to party pressure to run for the sf-at now held by Dem ocratic Sen. Warren G. Magnu- on. Langlie confirmed that the White House had urged him to make the race. Although the GOP leadership was anxious to get Langlie into the Senate race, he still was rated as tomething of an under dog against Magnuson, who has servtd 12 years in the Senate and eight in the House. The Kentucky break for the GOP was created by the death Tuesday of Sen. Alben W. Bark ley. Republican leaders were re ported ready to press John Sher man Cooper, former senator and now ambassador to India, to run for the four-year unexpired term. To Attend Funeral Other political news: ; The two active candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination, Adlai E. Stevenson and Sen. Estes Kefauver (D Tenn.), interrupated their cam paigning today to attend the funeral of Sen. Alben Barkley, (D-Ky.), at Paducah, Ky. Stevenson, at a news confer ence in San Francisco Wednes day, accused President Eisen hower of placing "politics over principle" in his recent veto of the Democratic farm bill. Kefauver, campaigning in northwest Florida, told a rally that a "false story is being cir culated" in that state, alleging that he favors use of federal troops to force racial integra-! tion. Kefauver said such an idea ! . was "unthinkable . . . tne worsi thing we could do." Cooper was elected twice by Kentucky voters to two-year va cancies in the Senate, but fail ed to win reelection each time. He was defeated most recently by Barkley in 1954. Elect Two Senators Kentucky will elect two sena tors next November because the term of Senate Democratic Whip Earle C. Clements also expires. Although Kentucky is normal ley a Democratic state, the GOP Is hopeful about its chances there this year because of a deep Democratic party rift be tween supporters of Clements and Gov. A. B. (Happy) Chand ler. Cooper declined to run for Clements" seat, snd Thurston B. Morton, former House member, resigned as assistant secretary of state to seek the GOP nomin ation. Since the deadline for enter ing the Kentucky primary has passed, nominees for the Bark ley seat will be chosen by state Republican and Democratic com mittees. Meanwhile, Chandler will appoint a Democratic sen ator to serve until November. Returns From India ' Almost coincidental with Barkley's death, Cooper return ed from India Wednesday for testimony before congressional committees and for a visit to Kenlucky. Whatever the outcome of the 1956 presidential race. Republi cans have long conceded that they face an uphill battle to win back, the Senate this year. Be fore Barkley's death, the lineup was 49 Democrats and 47 Re publicans. Although 35 senators will be elected in November, most of the 18 Democratic seats at stake are in the South or normally Democratic border states. And the Republicans have only a shaky hold on some of the 17 seats they are trying to keep. Republicans have believed that their best chances of replac ing Democrats are in Nevada, Oregon, New York, Kentucky and Washington. Insecticides May Cause Human Illness Portland (U.R) The State Board of Health today issued a warning that powerful organic phosphorous insecticides ex pected to be widely used in the state this year can cause death or serious illness to humans if swallowed, inhaled or splashed on the skin. Although the most toxic of the new compounds will be available only to farmers and commercial insect control firms, the department said that virtual ly all insecticides should be con sidered potentially dangerous to humans.
