SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday, April 30, 1958 Showdown Believed Coming in To Discard By LYLE C. WILSON United Press Correspondent Washington (U.R) It looks like an early and quiet show down is coming with the last re maining Ike men who don't want Vice -President Rich ard M. Nixon on this year's Re publican ticket. Two major figures in the Citizens - For Eis enhower Committee already are on record with a proposal to change the organization's name to Citizens-For-Eisenhower-And-Nixon. They are Peter H. Clayton, secretary and counsel for the committee, and James Murphy, 1952 nation al chairman of Citizens-For-Eis-enhower. Murphy and Clayton are Im portant men in the committee, but they do not control it. Gen. Lucius D. Clay and some others still are to be heard from. Wants To Wait Clay is believed to prefer to await Republican National Con vention action before committing Lyle C Wilson Campaign Nixon Cltizens-For-Eisenhower all-out to Nixon's renomination. The general was among a con siderable group of the President's friends, influntial men but most ly political amateurs, who want ed to dump Nixon. Most of the steam leaked from the dump-Nixon movement some weeks ago. Since Mr. Eisenhower welcomed Nixon as a running mate last week the boiler has gone all but dead. Some kind of policy announcement from Citi-zens-For-Eisenhower headquar ters now seems likely. If none come, it will be widely assumed that some members of the committe still believe Nixon may be sidetracked. The Demo cratic leadership will follow de velopments with unusual inter est. The top Democratic leader ship rates Nixon as Public Enemy No. 1. May Cost Votes Some are convinced the vice president will cost the Republi can ticket 3,000,000 or so votes on election day. There are not many available Republicans who can match Nix on as a vigorous campaigner. One of the weaknesses of the dump-Nixon movement was the inabiilty of anti-Nixon forces to Beauty, Religious Leaders Win Cash New York (U.R) A Florida beauty queen and two New York religious leaders each won S3000 Saturday night on a tele vision quiz program. Mrs. Toby Birne, tan ex-model from Miami, answered ques tions on the "History of Medi cine" to win her money on the NBC-TV show "The Big Sur prise." The religious leaders, Rabbi Irving J. Block and the Rev. Dr. Jesse William Stitte, answered questions on religion but fea tured an unusual twist. Rabbi Block answered questions on the history of Christianity and The Rev. Stitt, a Presbyterian min ister, answered questions on the history of Judaism. Mrs. Birne, whose husband is captain of a deep sea charter boat, teaches modeling at the University of Miami. She named Ed"'ard Jenner as the doctor who discovered vaccination as a means of preventing smallpox, and Bela Shick as the pediatri cian who developed the test that Rainier and Princess To Witness Bullfight ..
