Sunday, April 29. 1958 Club to Change Meeting Place The bi-monthly card party of Medford Sojourners' club was held Thursday at the Medford hotel. Lilacs and spirea centered the table. Hostesses were Mrs. Clif ford Griffitts, Mrs. Clarence Sta ley and Mrs. Teddy Mayfield. New members welcomed into the club are Mrs. W. Kenneth Johnson, Mrs. John W. Poage and Mrs. Everett DeGarmo. Prospective members intro duced were Mrs. Ernst E. Lar sen, Mrs. Herman Schroeder and ' Due to the increase of mem bership, the club has decided to hold future meetings at the Knights of Pythias hall located on the corner of Fifth and Grape streets. After a business meeting cards were played and prizes for bridge went to Mrs. Ted Quinn and Mrs. W. Kenneth Johnson. Pinochle awards went to Mrs. Ernest Dittmer and Mrs. Wil liam Hirschy and for canasta, Mrs. Clifford Griffitts and Mrs. Duane Zaback. Mrs. W. Ken neth Johnson received a special award. The next meeting of the club will be held May 10 at 1 p.m. at the Pythian hall. Newcomers to Medford and vicinity are cordially invited to attend and become members. Shower is Given At Birdseye Home Mrs. Bernie Mueller was hon ored at a shower party given last Sunday afternoon by Mrs. Victor Birdseye at the Birdseye home, Route 2. Arrangements of lilacs and tulips decorated the Birdseye home for the event. After the gifts had been pre sented, Mrs. Birdseye served re freshments. About 14 close friends of Mrs. Mueller attended the party. Mrs. Mueller, the former Car olyn Shangle, has been spending several months with her parents while Mr. Mueller serves with the United States Army. The traditional fraternity serenade and recep tion were held. Miss Byrd is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence E. Byrd, 1813 East Jackson street, Med ford. Mr. LaFollette is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. La Follette of Seattle, Wash. Miss Byrd received a Wash ington Sorophtimist club college scholarship and is now complet ing work for a degree in com mercial art. She is a member of Chi Omega sorority, University Rally Girls, ROTC Ring Dance Princess, and the Lambda Chi Crescent Queen court. Mr. LaFollette, a senior in business administration, is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, Oval club, Interfra ternity council, and was 1955 Homecoming chairman. The couple plans a fall wed ding in Seattle. Pythian Sisters Plan Mothers' Day Program For Meeting Tuesday Pythian Sisters will meet Tuesday, May 1, at 8 p.m. at the Pythian building with Mothers' day as the program topic. The committee in charge of refresh ments is Mrs. Margaret Davis, Mrs. Dollie Love and Mrs. Rosa Young. Past Chiefs' club of the Pyth ian Sisters will meet Wednes day, May 2, at 1 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Emilie Conrad, 632 Palm street, for a covered dish luncheon. Pythian club met last week with Mrs. Morley Lamp and Mrs. Leroy Cline as hostesses. Cards were played with prizes won by Mrs. Ed Bostwick and Mrs. Joe Cook, Mrs. Arnold Motschen bacher will be hostess for the next meeting. Candidates To Appear On Program Nearly all county candidates will be able to take part in the "Meet Your Candidate" program of Medford League of Women Voters, the league announces. The program will be held Fri day, May 4, at Hedrick High school at 8 p.m. In addition to county cand dates, the four contenders for the two state representatives' positions will be present. The in cumbents are E. H. Mann and E. A. Littrell, Republicans, and R. A. Boyer and R. B. Duncan are the Democrats running. Candidates for delegates to the national Republican conven tion will also appear. They are William McAllister and Robert Elliott, delegates at large; and Mrs. Frank Bash, Robert Dickey and Rodney Keating, candidates for delegate from the fourth dis trict. Tv-Dical of the response by candidates to the invitation from the league is this letter from Alf B. Mekvold, county super intendent of schools and a cand idate for reelection. "I am pleas ed to accept your invitations to participate in the public 'Meet Your Candidates program, ne wrote. "The work of the league of Women Voters in furthering information programs, creating public interest and increasing citizen participation in govern ment is well recognized." Fellowship Hour Set By Christian Women The monthly prayer and fel lowship time of Christian Busi ness and Professional "Women will be held Monday, April 30, at the noon hour from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Place of meeting will be the annex of the First Bap tist church, North Central at Fifth. Mrs. Gertrude Neff, chairman of the program, states that those attending may bring a sack lunch and come at the time best suited to them. Coffee and tea will be served. This noon hour fellowship is in preparation for the dinner meeting held at the Hotel Jack son Pioneer room the, first Mon day of each month. Christian, Eagle Point, announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Carrie Car lene Christian, to William A. Henson, son of Mrs. Molly Bohl, Hollywood orchard, and James H. Henson, White City. The bride-elect attends school at Eagle Point. Her fiance is employed by his father at Desert Lumber sales, White City. No definite date has been set for the wedding. f Group Hears Report of, Convention Members of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority Monday evening heard a report of the state con vention held in Roseburg. Mrs. D. R. McAdoo, Jetmore, Kan., was guest speaker for the con vention. Epsilon Sigma Alpha is a non academic, educational, cultural, social, and philanthropic sorori ty. The sorority sponsors nation al study programs on such top ics as self-expression, home dec oration and mental attitudes. Chapters may choose from the national material or organize their own educational program. Mrs. McAdoo reported that in 1941 there were 800 members throughout the country. Now there are nearly 40,000 in 42 states, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Holland, Japan and Mexico. Oregon has played no small part in the growth of the sorori ty since the state's first chapter was formed in 1940, it was said. From 1950 to 1956 chapters in Oregon have increased from 17 to 52. Last year Epsilon Sigma Al pha chapters contributed more than $800,000 in cash, plus in numerable hours of volunteer service and material gifts, to charitable projects, according to Mrs. McAdoo. The National project of the sorority is aid to handicapped children. In Ore gon this takes the form of help for Children's Hospital school in Eugene. Last year $4,435.00 was sent to the school. Many chapters also adopt local service projects in their own communities. Pendelton was chosen the state convention city for 1957 and the state council meeting will be in The Dalles in Septem ber. Members of Alpha Lambda chapter attending were Mrs. Robert Klumph, Mrs. Thomas Makris, Mrs. Norman Oberst, Mrs. William Raymond, Mrs. Robert Shangle and Mrs. Lyman Smith. Mr. Klumph, Mr. Makris and Mr. Smith joined them for the dance Saturday evening. Mrs. Chester Jines, until re cently of this chapter, was chosen outstanding girl for the year. This is the first year an outstanding girl has been chosen in Oregon. Mrs. Fred Stammen, a charter member of Alpha Lambda, was nominated for the office of state historian. Mrs. Smith served on the balloting committee. A Founders day celebration will be held Monday, April 30 at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Russell Roseborough, 151 High land drive. The group will conduct a rum mage sale, Friday, May 4, start ing at 9 a.m. at Girls' Communi ty club, 229 North Bartlett street. Roll out biscuit mix dough Vt inch thick and cut into 3-inch squares.
