Frank Strafaci Scores Victories In North-South Pinehurst, N.C. (U.R) Frank Strafaci of. Garden City, N.Y., hoped today that he had all of the "bulging bogeys" out of his system and that could go on to win the North and South Ama teur Golf Championship for the third time. Strafaci survived two gruel ling rounds of match play Wed nesday in which he defeated H. H. Haverstick Jr., of Lancaster, Pa., 2 and 1, then established himself as the tournament favor ite by eliminating giant killer Howard Everitt of Northfield N.J., 1-up in 19 holes. Everitt earlier had defeated the tourna ment medalist, Doug Sanders of Cedartown, Ga., 3 and 2 in the upset of the tournament. Sand ers had carded two successive rounds of six-under-par 66's. (Klam ath Falls, and Grants Pass met on Medford's neutral field in the decider.) The way this sea son's chase has been going the possibility of a deadlock again in the final standings is strong. But it's too early right now to tell. Perhaps, this week end's contention will give a better in dication. Medford will meet Ashland here tomorrow while Klamath Falls entertains Grants Pass in a double header. If Medford's Black Tornado can repeat its Tuesday victory over the Griz zlies and if GP can sweep its stand with the Pelicans, Ash land, Medford and Grants Pass will be locked in a tie for first place and Klamath Fall.', virtual ly will be out of the r?.ce. Ashland and Klamath victor ies would strengthen the hold of the loop-pacing Grizzlies al though the other three teams still would be in definite con tention. The Friday battles loom as toss ups. Grants Pass and Klamath split before and GP fans feel the odds are against a Caveman sweep on the Pel field. Ashland has won two from Medford and the Tornado one from Ashland. LONG BALL IMPORTANT Perhaps our memory if ihort but it seems the long ball extra bate hits is playing a bigger role in Southern Oregon Conference baseball. Quite a few homers hare been walloped. Portland Oregonian. The bests listed are Wally Larson, :20.4, low hurdles; Mike Russell :51.1, quarter mile; Wilcey Winchell, 2:02 half-mile and Lew Breazeale, 12 feet 9 inches, Pole vault. Not listed is Neil Plumley's 53-9 3A shot put for Medford which would place him second to the 57-4 of Glenn Johnson. Beaverion. Larson's :15-2 in the high hurdles is second to the :14.7 by Eric Giberson, Beaverton. It's interesting that another Russell, Daryl, of Roosevelt, Portland, has a :51.3 time in the quarter, second best to that of Medford's sophomore. Bob Mason, Crater, is list ed at secend best with 21 feet in the brdad jump. Check back into our files finds an early season jump of 21-l3s for Wayne Close, Medford, and 21-'2 for Mike Hawkins, also Medford. Medford had a tie and a one-run win in contention with the Comets. Ashland and Grants Pass had to go extra in nings for one-run nods but the Cavemen did follow up the closey with an 11 to 0 decision over Crater. MEDFORDITES TOPS Four Medford high track men have turned in the best times in the state so far in their events, according to a rundown made by Bob Swan, prep sports writer for the TWO FINEST TEAMS After the Grants Pass Rotary club track meet last Saturday, George Curtis, sportswriter for tl.e Dailey Courier of GP, term the Medford and GP teams "the two finest 1956 high school track teams in Oregon." Curtis also says, "coaches who want to compete on even terms with Medford next year will have -to improve their own squads. They can't wait for Medford to slip, because (Coach Bob) Newland's crew is pretty certain to be strong again." He points to the top performers Medford will have back next year. He feels thai, if and when a permanent grandstand re places the temporary bleach ers, crowds watching track will be larger. If larger, more comfortable stands are to attract larger crowds. Grants Pass fans will have to be different from those here. Medford has the facilities for handling huge numbers of cinder observers but still the crowds are meag er compared to what is de serving for a state champion ship team year after year.
