TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) Fish Season Opening Day Outlook Told Portland (UP) Thousands of Oregon trout fishermen will flock to streams for the opening of the 1956 season Saturday. The State Game commission said to day that streams generally are in good shape west of the Cas cades but that snow runoff has caused murky water in many areas east of the mountains. In the northwest area, the commission said nearly all streams were in good condition except the Sandy, Clackamas and Molalla where snow runoff has caused water to be a little off color. Streams in the Willamette valley and along the coast are in good shape. Rogue Slightly High In the southwest, the North Umpqua river is murky and the main Rogue is slightly high al though water temperatures are improving. Good results are expected in central Oregon. Rivers in the upper Deschutes area are in good shape. Wickiup reservoir is full. The Little Deschutes is out of its banks but water color is fair. The lower Deschutes below the Crooked river mouth is muddy from snow runoff. White river and 15-mile creek are good bets in this area. Most streams in the northeast are high and muddy from the snow melt. Smaller streams ap pear the best bet in the Blue and Wallowa mountains. In the south east, many streams are murky because of melted snow. Southwest: Striped bass fish ing in Isthmus slough over until fall; trout fishing should be fair to good in both forks of Milli coma; trout angling on south fork of Coos river and tribu taries should be good; Coquille river should be good; bait prob ably best except flies in upper south fork. Salmon fishing has been slow on lower Rogue but may im-j prove; trout stream water condi tions good with Chetco and Elk rivers good bets; Garrison and Floras lakes also should be good. In upper Rogue area, streams I are high and cold for this time of year with spinners and worms good bets; main Rogue slightly high; bait recommended; Apple gate riveY in good shape above mouth of Little Applegate river; some creeks high but color good. Fish lake road in Jackson county opened last week to the resort; Willow creek reservoir iri ex cellent shape; road and camp ing spots good; north and main Umpqua rivers cloudy by melted snow; prospects fair to . good; Smith river, lower Umpqua and lakes in good shape. Multnomah Stadium, where the Beavers are moving from ancient Vaughn street ball park, has an announced seating cap acity of 28,870. Bill Mulflur, as sistant general manager, said to day that 15,000 tickets have been sold for the afternoon game and about 13,000 for the ni,jht contest. Hope for Sunshine This would assure beating any PCL marks for home openers this season, the largest to date Wickiup reservoir accesible from main road and east river road along the Deschutes; Wickiup reservoir full and fish scattered; Odell lake accessible only at the east end at Odell lake resort; campgrounds under snow. . Kokanee fishing expected to be good at XDdell lake which has some ice at east end; Crooked river tributaries high and murky; Ochoco river and lower portions of tributaries should be good; Klamath county should be fair but most streams high and roads at higher levels closed by snow; Wood and Williamson rivers don't open until May 26. What Beavers officials hope is that they will be blessed with sunshine and an afternoon turnout which will beat the PCL record for one game of 23,603 set in San Francisco in 1946. Mulflur said the Beavers' poor showing so far has not hindered ticket sales. Last night Portland brought its record to 6-10 for the season by downing San Diego 2-1 be hind Bill Werle's pitching. Bob Alexander will pitch the afternoon game and Rene Valdes the night game for Portland to morrow. Crater Eyes Rogue Toga Crater high's Comets will be out this week end -to cinch the Rogue League baseball cham pionship -and the District 6 A-2 southern division banner. The Comets are host to Eagle Point at Central Point on Friday. On Saturday the two teams vie at Eagle Point. Phoenix plays Illinois Valley at Cave Junction on Friday and entertains the Cougars on Saturday. So far in the circuit, the Cra ter club boasts a spotless record over four games. OSC Gridders Open Spring Drill Friday Oregon State College, Cor vallis Another spring football session at Oregon State will be- gin Friday, with 18 returning let termen from the surprising 1955 team expected to be on hand. Coach Tommy Prothro, who ; led the Beavers to a second place finish in the Pacific Coast Con ference race last season, will conduct another young squad through 20 sessions over a 30 day period. In 1955, OSC won six and lost three, with a 5-2 con ference mark. Prothro's staff remains the same and is composed of Clay Stapleton, first assistant; Bob Zelinka, line; Bob Watson, back field; and Dick Twenge, fresh man. Watson spurned an offer thsi winter from Jim Sutherland to join the new Washington State college staff. Also helping out with spring drills will be John Thomas, OSC captain in 1951, who is on the campus working towards a master's degree, fol lowing military service in Japan. Lost via the graduation route, or other means, were 11 letter men six of whom won three varsity awards in their stay here. No longer available are Ron Siegrist and Howard Buett genbach, 1955 co-captains, and Dick Mason, Bob Riggert, Andy Skief, Larry Stevens, Vern Sampels, Arlo Wenstrand, Homer Williams, Ray Westfall and Dan Naranche. Letter-winners back from the 1955 squad are Bob DeGrant, Norm Thiel, Dwayne Fournier and Leon Hittner, ends; John Witte and Dave Jesmer, tackles; Vern Ellison, Ron Daniels and John Shiffen, guards; Bob Had raba and Dick Corrick, centers; Ted Searle, Gerry Laird and Frank Negri, blocking backs; Joe Francis and Bernie Bruce, tail backs; Sam Wesley, wingback, and Tom Berry, fullback. Bob Clark and Jack Hogan. who both missed last sea son because of shoulder opera tions, also will be on hand, in addition to one of the largest sophomore crops in years. The 1956 Beavers will con tinue to use the balanced line single wing style of play, iden tical to that employed by UCLA. The Bruins and Beavers finished 1-2 in PCC play in 1955. Medford Junior Rifle Shooter Could Rank High Margaret Taylor, Central Point, who last week end won the na tional junior sectional rifle shoot at Roseburg is rated as having a chance to rank among the top six girl shooters in the country this year. A score of 189 was tops for girls in 1955. Margaret, 15, started shooting with the Medford Junior Rifle club in 1950 and has had regular attendance since. Her sister, Phyllis had the high girls' score at Roseburg last year with 181. The two girls and William Goldin and Jim Fawcett made up Medford's third place team this year at Roseburg. Margaret had a 184. Phyllis a 177, Goldin 177 and Fawcett 161. Four positions on the Medford squad tomorrow are to be filled by Tom Hamlin, Gary Harring ton, Dick Copple and Jim Ma- terie, according to Coach .Paul Evensen. Fifth spot will be oc cupied by Phil Mongrain or Bill Foote. B Leaguers Mix Friday St. Mary's high of Medford and Talent will go after their fourth counting victories of the season in Friday scraps in the Jackson County B Baseball League. The two are still unbeaten in the race. Talent has a date at Rogue River and St. Mary's goes to Jacksonville. Prospect plays at Butte Falls in the other league scramble. Should the Crusaders of Med ford and Talent both come through this week their game at Talent on May 4 will be the de cider in the pennant campaign. The clubs are playing a five game league schedule. Talent has won the crown for the past two years and has been a state tourney entry both sea sons. St. Mary's was Jackson champ in 1953. Becker, who was accompanied by a husky bodyguard when he appeared in federal District Court to speak his piece, said he especially wanted the Ezzard Charles-Jersey Joe Walcott title fight in 1949 because Cincinnati was Charles' home town and he was convinced there would be a sell-out crowd. He came to New York, he said, and approached James Nor ris, the head of the IBC.
